In a striking contemporary production, the 15-person ensemble illuminates this timeless play about the struggle to do what is right in a world of absolute morality. Highly stylized “viewpoints” movement creates a unique and visceral landscape for this dynamic production.

Now in its 22nd year, the award-winning SYT program provides students with opportunities to team with adult professional theatre artists in all aspects of theatre. SYT 2013 features an ensemble of young artists: Hunter Archield-Cupit, Sky Blaw, Cole Buford, Callier Creedle, Taylor Cruse, Sean Eure, Sean Feighan-Patrizi, Hannah Greer, Izzy Heffington, Ryanna Henson, Luna Newcomer, Hanna Patterson, Kat Powell, Riley Simpson, Martha Zo Ryland, and Gus Tucker.

SYT 2013 is mentored by professional adult theatre artists. Directed by Talena Martinez. Choreography by Katherine Wilkinson. Scenic Design by Ann Marie Gordon. Lighting Design by Jason Amato. Costume Design by Elisha Adelman. Stage Management by Tamara L. Farley. Production Management by Helen Parish. Producing Artistic Director, Bonnie Cullum. Associate Producer, Melissa Vogt-Patterson.

Notes from director Chester Eitze on his Auditions:
  • September's Always...Patsy Cline is already cast.
  • November's Bingo (musical) performs Fridays and Saturdays, November 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday Matinee, Nov. 17 at 2:30 p.m.
  • December's holiday show or shows will be scheduled after auditions, but most likely performance dates are Fridays and Saturdays December 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21 and Sunday Dec. 15, 2013.

*Note from director Engela Edwards on her Auditions: I'm thrilled to be directing at the Opera House again. I arrived in Texas at the end of May and have already directed one show at the Opera House. I can't wait to see familiar faces, and hope to meet new performers during this audition.

About auditioning for the shows I'm directing:

  • My call backs will be July 9.
  • I will then cast my season shows, and you will be contacted on July 10.
  • We will have a read through with the cast as soon as possible where you will get your rehearsal schedule.
  • My 2013 shows will have traditional 4 to 5 day-a-week rehearsals, lasting for 4 to 5 weeks, immediately prior to the show dates, followed by 3 weekends of performances.
  • Performances happen on Fridays, Saturdays, and some Sundays.
  • August 2013 show: Rehearsals starts July 10 or 11, and performances are Fridays and Saturdays, August 9, 16, 17, 23, 24 and Sunday Matinee August 11, 18, 2013. Currently I have four scripts I want to direct for August. The talent I see at auditions will determine which show is the August show and which will have to wait until the 2014.
  • October 2013 Oz! Regular rehearsals for the Adult performers start September 9. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays Oct. 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26, and Sunday Matinees Oct. 13 & 20.
  • Adults will rehearse in the evenings. Plan on pickup rehearsals on Thursday's of show week. I need everyone there dress rehearsal week.
  • There is a chance that there could be an opportunity for an additional show which rehearses during the day, depending on the rehearsal availability schedule of the talent I see at auditions. So bring your calendars, because ALL rehearsal and performance conflicts will need to be noted at the auditions.

I usually have a cast in mind when I choose a show, or I know that I have the talent available to cast the show I've chosen. Since I have been traveling since the 2011 Bastrop Wildfires, I'm not sure what talent is available, therefore I have chosen:

a play with an all female cast
a play with an all male cast
a silly musical with a huge cast of men and women
a comedy with a small cast of men and woman
a comedy with a small cast of mostly younger roles
a comedy with a medium sized cast of all older roles
shows that require very experienced actors
shows that could work with less experienced actors

If you plan to audition for one of my shows, please send me an email and tell me a little about yourself. Send email to Engela@EASYtheatre.com and make sure you write "auditions" in the subject line.

at the Salvage Vanguard Theater - 2803 Manor Rd, Austin TX 78722 - click for map.

Conceived by award-winning interdisciplinary artist Daniel Alexander Jones with composer Bobby Halvorson, JOMAMA JONES: RADIATE is part concert, part revival - featuring the triumphant return of legendary expatriate performer Jomama Jones. A mythical R&;B diva who left the United States after a string of hits in the 1980s, Jomama Jones returns from the darkness as a lone star with a singular purpose – to awaken the comeback in us all, through her music and live performance.

Jones is accompanied by her collaborator and musical director, Bobby Halvorson, her backing vocalists, the Sweet Peaches - the extraordinary Helga Davis and Laura Jean Anderson, and a knockout band. She also welcomes a series of very special guests from the Austin community. Jomama Jones shares songs of resilience and regeneration as she recounts her rise to the stratosphere, her self-imposed exile from the U.S. and surprising observations of the America to which she has returned.

"RADIATE glows..." said the New York Times, "making it hard to resist this sequined earth-mother's soulful embrace."

“…A fully fledged creation, complete with a hot band and a powerful message about staying human in tough times” – Minneapolis City Pages

“Jones is a brilliant persona, full of love, light, and beautiful lyrics and stories.” – Jill Dolan, The Feminist Spectator

“Performed with fearless style ... [Jomama Jones] will have you wiggling and bouncing in your seat... a fusion of retro-funk, camp and theatricality that begs for yet another comeback.”– David Cote, NY-1 News

Come spend an evening with the woman Backstage Magazine called "a true theatrical original!”

Performances run July 5th thru July 13th, Thursdays-Saturdays, at 8pm with one late night performance Friday July 12th at 10:30pm at the Salvage Vanguard Theater - 2803 Manor Rd, Austin TX 78722.

PERFORMING POSSIBILITIES, Conspire Theatre, July 14, 2013

Conspire Theatre Performing Possibilities
Sunday, July 14th at 5:00 pm
The Off Center, 2211 Hidalgo St Austin, TX 78702

Since 2009, Conspire Theatre has led theatre and creative writing workshops for women incarcerated at the Travis County Correctional Complex in Del Valle. This July marks Conspire’s first project with women in the free world. On Sunday, July 14th, Conspire Theatre will premiere its first ever public performance, Performing Possibilities.

From July 12th through July 14th, Conspire will lead a three-day theatre workshop with women who have been to jail or prison. This will culminate in a public performance and community dinner catered by Bridget Dunlap’s new restaurant Mettle.

Over the final quarter of the 20th century, U.S. criminal justice policies underwent a period of intense politicization and harsh transformation. Draconian sentencing laws and get-tough correctional policies led to an unprecedented increase in jail and prison populations, driving the United States’ rate of incarceration head and shoulders above that of other developed nations[1]. The number of women serving sentences of more than a year grew by 757% between 1977 and 2004—nearly twice the 388% increase in the male prison population[2].

Women coming out of jail and prison face stigma that make finding stable housing and employment difficult, but many make huge efforts come back into their communities and make positive change. Join us as women tell their own stories of struggle and triumph, sorrows and joy set against the larger backdrop of incarceration in Texas.

About Conspire Theatre: Founded in 2009, Conspire Theatre offers incarcerated women and their allies a healing and empowering experience through theatre and creative writing. Kat Craft and Michelle Dahlenburg are the co-Artistic Directors. To learn more visit www.conspiretheatre.org or watch a short video about our work at http://www.klru.org/women-and-girls-lead/kat.php

A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE by Tennessee Williams, City Theatre, July 25 - August 18, 2013

Preview: Shakespeare at Winedale, 2013, University of Texas, July 18 - August 11

Shakespeare at Winedale TX

July 18 - August 11, 2013
Winedale Barn
3738 FM 2714 Round Top, Texas 78954-4901 (click for map )
Shakespeare at Winedale’s 2013 Summer Class takes the stage this summer with performances of The Comedy of Errors, The Tempest, Henry IV, Part I, and, for the first time at Winedale, Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus. Performances will begin July 18th and run through August 11th; performances are Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 7:30pm with matinees on Saturdays and Sundays at 2pm. Tickets are $10 for general admission or $5 for students/UT ID holders and may be ordered online through the Shakespeare at Winedale website www.shakespeare-winedale.org.
The complete summer performance schedule can be accessed at this link: http://www.utexas.edu/cola/progs/winedale/_files/pdf/Performances-And-Tickets/Summer_Schedule_2013.pdf

For the first time in the program’s history, this summer’s class will perform Christopher Marlowe’s thrilling tragedy of Doctor Faustus. Based on the classic German myth, the tale of Doctor Faustus chronicles one academic’s deal with the Devil to gain knowledge and power. This is only the third non-Shakespearean play to be performed at Winedale, and the first time Marlowe has been performed in the Winedale Theatre Barn. Join us for a devilish good time.

The magic continues with Shakespeare’s The Tempest, which tracks the survival of shipwrecked sailors as they roam about an island inhabited with a spirit, Ariel, a monster, Caliban, and the vengeful sorcerer, Prospero. This tale of magic, revenge and betrayal will come to life when set against the backdrop of Winedale’s natural beauty.

Henry IV, Part I begins with a disquieted new King of England, Henry IV, who must begin his reign by dealing with the murder of his predecessor, battles with Scotland and Wales, and his son’s debauched behavior. This is the first of Shakespeare’s plays in which we are introduced to the lovably infamous Falstaff – a role so hilarious it allegedly earned commendation from the Queen Elizabeth I. Shakespeare at Winedale prides itself on its histories. You won’t want to miss this classic tale.
The Comedy of Errors sees two sets of twins who were separated at birth thrown back together with a wonderful array of confusion and frustration. Shakespeare’s shortest play, Comedy will delight audiences with a slapstick farce of mistaken identity.
“We have a fantastic array of performances this summer,” says Shakespeare at Winedale Director James Loehlin. “The Comedy of Errors is one of Shakespeare’s funniest plays, and The Tempest is perhaps his most magical one. Henry IV is a history, a comedy, and a tragedy wrapped up in one play, and Falstaff is probably Shakespeare’s greatest comic character. And it is a thrill to be doing Marlowe—Faustus is a haunting play you will never forget.”

When the students complete their work in residence, they will tour to Austin and Dallas, TX, as well as the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, VA, home to the world’s only historical recreation of Shakespeare’s Blackfriars stage. More information about touring dates and venues will be posted to the website soon.

Thursday, July 25th, is Fayette County Night; tickets for Fayette County residents are only $4 for that evening’s performance of The Tempest, and door prizes will be raffled off at the end of the performance. Our annual Season Finale is Saturday, August 10th, beginning at 6:30pm with a special catered reception before the evening performance of The Comedy of Errors; tickets are $25.

Shakespeare at Winedale is a University of Texas program in which students study and perform Shakespeare at the Winedale Historical Complex near Round Top. Since its founding by English professor James Ayres in 1970, the program’s unique, hands-on approach has brought Shakespeare’s words to life for hundreds of students and thousands of audience members. University students from many disciplines and backgrounds work together for six weeks at Winedale, ending their summer with four weekends of performances in a converted nineteenth-century hay barn.

For more information about the Shakespeare at Winedale program, please visit our website: www.shakespeare-winedale.org or contact the Program Coordinator Liz Fisher at (512) 471-4726 or lfisher@austin.utexas.edu.
