The Wondrous Strange Players are proud to announce the opening of their newest production, Federico Garcia Lorca’s BLOOD WEDDING. Written in 1932, the play was based upon newspaper clippings that Lorca had saved for a number of years before he began work on the piece. The play was strongly influenced by the political climate in Spain at the time. The work reflects the attitudes and beliefs of the working class in the years just prior to the Spanish Civil War.
The story of BLOOD WEDDING concerns a young engaged couple approaching their wedding day. As the day comes closer, the Bride (Cameron Holmes) begins to realize she is still passionately drawn to her ex-lover, Leonardo (Austen Simien). Complicating the matter is the fact that Leonardo’s family was implicated in the deaths of The Groom’s father and brother. The Bride must choose between the Groom (Steven Brandt), who can provide wealth and security, and her heart’s desire, Leonardo. The choices the young lovers make lead to a deadly confrontation in the woods, spurred on by the involvement of The Moon (Sabrina Tarbutton) and a mysterious Beggar (Casey Allen).
Featuring a cast of both seasoned actors and newcomers, this updated version of the poetic classic is sure to be remembered. The cast includes company members Steven Brandt, Sabrina Tarbutton, Casey Allen and Christl Climans. Newcomers to the company include Cameron Holmes, Austen Simien, Terrie Cooper, Dustin Beyer, Kat Eason, Mike Dellens, Thomas Epling and Anne Gomez-Guzman. The production is directed by Wondrous Strange company member Michael Floyd (Chaotic Theatre’s Lysistrata and A Midsummer Night’s Dream). Sound Design and original music was composed by Taylor Kirk. The production is stage managed by Jessie Robles.
