Auditions for Behind Those Hazel Lies, a new play by Mark-Anthony Zuniga, directed by Davvi Solomon, are available by appointment only (after 6pm) beginning Thursday, August 8th to Sunday, August 25th (or until all roles are filled). Auditions will be held in the F. Loren Winship Drama Building located on the UT Austin campus at 300 E. 23rd St. and San Jacinto Blvd. The audition will consist of a cold reading from the script, sides can be emailed. Callbacks to be determined later if needed.
Behind Those Hazel Lies is a story about a gay man named Kavin who is convinced by his friends to take a ballet class to help him get over his ex-boyfriend. His roommate Renzi is proud of his own body and often walks around shirtless. The next door neighbor Phenni, a ballet dancer, is the one who inspires him to try out ballet.
Unexpectedly, ballet will ultimately test friendships, create family drama, reveal secrets and promote healing. This student-driven production is a play, but each scene will demonstrate a ballet term, which also represents the underlying theme. A staged reading of this play (previously titled Danseur Drama) was a Filament sparked by Suzan Zeder as part of The Cohen New Works Festival presented by the University Co-op in 2013.
PLEASE NOTE: Anyone auditioning must be comfortable with mature subject matter which includes male/male intimacy. No prior dance experience required, but actors should be comfortable learning basic ballet (the mother will not be required to dance). There is no compensation for working on this production.
Rehearsals will range from 6pm - 10:30pm beginning September 3rd (exact days/times TBD). Performance dates are October 8th -12th, up to 4 days of evening performances, 1 matinee (exact days/times TBD).
