So appears the invitation in the Chipping Cleghorn Gazette. How exciting! The villagers expect a game. A crowd gathers. The murderer is chosen. The victim falls. Then the lights go out… It’s suddenly no longer a game when a body is discovered. How could this happen? Where did the game go wrong? Fortunately Miss Marple is on hand – the greatest player of them all!

The Haunted House is a joyous, goofy farce by the Roman comic playwright Plautus (some of whose works became the basis for the Broadway musical A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum). All of the traditional stock elements of Roman comedy are here: the crafty slave (Tranio), the crabby old Father (Cantankerus), the buxom prostitute (Viagra), the lovesick young-man (Gluteus Maximus), etc.

The plot is this: Father departs on a business trip, and his son immediately buys a prostitute and parties non-stop. When Father unexpectedly returns, Tranio, the crafty slave, hides everyone in the house--and convinces Father than the house is, in fact, haunted. But Tranio's deception spawns even more lies, and eventually embroils the entire city in his deception, including an unsuspecting neighbor, and an avaricious money-lender. The beauty of Plautus' play is that it combines the lowest of comedy--slapstick and puns!--with keen social commentary, including criticism of real-estate housing bubbles (still a problem) as well as the pretensions and stupidity of the powerful. 

Tom Jenkins' modern adaptation sets the play in San Antonio, and is jammed with zippy and hopefully offensive wordplay.

Grumio: A country slave, any age. (Originally written as male, could also be female.)

Inebrius: Gluteus's best friend. (Male, Early 20\'s.)
Viagra: Gluteus's girlfriend, and ex-prostitute. (Female, 20s or 30s)
Scapha: Viagra's hair-dresser, and a slave. (Female, 40s or older.)
Avaricius: a greedy money-lender. (Written as male, could be female.)
Xena: a female slave and a floozy. (Written as female, could conceivably be a male. Mid 20\'s.)
Phaniscus: a Good Slave. (Written as male, could be female. Any age.)

The Laramie Project chronicles how the town of Laramie, Wyoming, comes to grips with the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay student at the University of Wyoming.

In October 1998, Matthew Shepard was savagely beaten and left to die, tied to a fence outside of Laramie. The murder focused the nation’s attention on the lack of hate crime laws. A month after the murder, Moisés Kaufman and members of Tectonic Theater Project conducted hundreds of interviews with residents of Laramie. They combined these interviews, their own reactions, and media reports into a moving theatre piece in which the company portrays over sixty characters. (For mature audiences.)

The film of this play opened at the Sundance Film Festival in 2002 and was nominated for 4 Emmys.

Zell Miller III comes full circle with this production, starring as Walter Younger. A Raisin in the Sun was the first play that Zell ever performed back at Capital City Playhouse in Austin in the 1980’s.

Zell’s long-time friend and mentor, Laurie Carlos, guest artist from Minneapolis, joins UpRise! to direct this innovative production at The VORTEX. Laurie brings a totally new vision and interpretation  to A Raisin in the Sun, a play that she never thought that she would be doing. But because of Zell Miller III’s relationship to this play and to his hometown of Austin where he is raising his children, Laurie was pleased to come and direct this dynamic new production of a classic.

A near fatal encounter in front of a passenger train brings two very different men together to explore and debate the meaning of life, human suffering, and the existence of God.

Trinity Street Players will present Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist Cormac McCarthy’s The Sunset Limited at Trinity Street Theatre located at 901 Trinity Street in downtown Austin. A famous novelist, McCarthy has written All the Pretty Horses, The Road, and No Country for Old Men, all which have been adapted for film. A two-character drama, The Sunset Limited has been billed as a “novel in dramatic form.”

The play involves two nameless characters whose lives intersect when “Black” saves “White” from throwing himself in front of a train. The story unfolds and follows the men as they go back to Black’s sparse Harlem apartment. The men find they are polar opposites; Black reveals himself as an evangelical ex-convict; White, an atheistic professor. As they discuss White's suicide attempt, a verbal duel results, prompting both characters to remain fervently rooted in their beliefs. The Sunset Limited is directed by Patrick Torres, who recently moved to Austin from Washington, DC where he worked for 10 years as a director and educator. The cast includes Trevor Bissell and Derek Jone. Bissell most recently appeared as the title character in the City Theatre's production of William Shakespeare's Othello. Jones has been involved in the performing arts for more than 30 years - acting, directing, writing and producing. He appeared recently on Trinity Street Player's stage in the critically-acclaimed Almost, Maine. He also serves on the board of Austin's local B Iden Payne Awards Council.

Scottish Rite Theatre Fires Emily Marks, Cuts Short Charlotte's Web

Shows canceled, camps moved amid leadership changes at Scottish Rite Theater

‍Scottish ‍Rite Theater fired its executive director this week, forcing the group to cancel eight performances and throwing into question the fate of its summer camps.

Emily Marks, who served as the group’s leader and artistic director since January 2012, was terminated by the board of directors Tuesday. Since then, the board has canceled its remaining performances of “Charlotte’s Web.” The ticketing agent has been contacted and all customers will get their money back, said board President Todd Smith.

Meanwhile the summer camps have been disrupted. Girls Thrive Theater has been relocated to the Salvage Vanguard Theater, Marks said. Arrangements are not yet made for Puppet Pandemonium.
Marks — who also did not publicly discuss the reasons behind her departure — said she is proud of the work she did at the nonprofit. Before working at the theater, Marks founded Girls Rock Austin, a nonprofit focused on female empowerment through music.

“I am incredibly proud of the work our team accomplished at the ‍Scottish ‍Rite Theater,” she said. “We have served over 12,000 children since January 2012. I am incredibly grateful to the original board and organizational infrastructure for hiring me, and remain proud of the excellent programming we provided in an incredible space.”

Smith also declined to comment on Marks’ firing.

“The ‍Scottish Theater has a long history of providing quality child programming over the years and it is our intention to continue providing high-quality, wholesome entertainment for children and their families,” Smith said.

The theater was built in the late 1800s and was purchased more than 100 years ago by the Austin ‍Scottish ‍Rite fraternity, which started the children’s theater in 2004 as a family programming venue.
Although the organization was created by the ‍Scottish ‍Rite, the theater is an independent nonprofit with an annual budget of about $300,000.

Direct from Broadway BONNIE AND CLYDE is a thrilling, edgy, biographical musical account of Texas’ most infamous couple.

At the height of the Great Depression two small-town nobodies in West Texas become America’s most renowned folk heroes and the Texas law enforcement’s worst nightmares. Fearless, shameless, and alluring, their electrifying story of love, adventure and crime captured the excited attention of an entire country. Now, the most notorious couple of the twentieth century takes on a whole new adventure: the stage.

 

When BONNIE AND CLYDE meet, their mutual cravings for excitement and fame immediately set them on a mission to chase their dreams. Their bold and reckless behavior turns the young lovers’ thrilling adventure into a downward spiral, putting themselves and their loved ones in trouble with the law. Forced to stay on the run from every southern state’s police force, the lovers resort to robbery and murder to survive. As the infamous duo’s fame grows bigger, their inevitable end draws nearer.

 

BONNIE AND CLYDE is an exciting, cutting-edge musical with a non-traditional score, combining blues, gospel, bluegrass and rockabilly music. Our production will feature a large ensemble cast, spectacular scenic design, rocking live orchestra, and a recreation of the infamous Bonnie & Clyde 1934 Ford V8 death car! Please be advised that this production, based on true events, does depict some instances of violence.

ART SHOW/MODEL SHOW is a multi-media, interactive performance experiment undergoing creation by Kelli Bland, Meghan Adriel Dwyer, Michelle Keffer, Jorge Sermini and Elizabeth Doss based on our experiences as art models. The piece will investigate three folds of art modeling that interest us: the physical experience, the contemporary and historical context, and the queries we encounter in the discipline. Paper Chairs is excited to present our most fruitful findings at the end of summer 2013!

ART SHOW/MODEL SHOW aspires to be these things: a living gallery, a life drawing session, a voyeuristic experiment, a lesson in drawing and art history, a conversation about the purpose of art in society, and an intimate look at the relationship between the artist and model in figurative art.

This collaborative performance will include live drawing and painting by local Austin artists. Alongside the composition of timed poses and staged scenes will be sensorial stimulation, including documentary-style footage and sound bites pieced together from interviews with local artists and models, as well as live drawing projections. It will also include a gallery show, curated by the Austin artists who hire us, and will be presented, or rather, categorized by each model, so that the audience can see the varied and unique perceptions of each individual person

TexARTS Association for the Performing and Visual Arts welcomes the community to an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2013. The celebration will kick off the 2013-2014 Academy year.
In addition to getting first chance at registering for the upcoming fall classes, attendees can also participate in free dance and visual arts classes; meet the TexARTS instructors - many of whom are Broadway veterans and serve on the faculty of nationally recognized Texas State University musical theatre program; watch selected performances from recent TexARTS productions; enjoy refreshments; and win tickets to upcoming shows.

TexARTS upcoming season includes: “Holiday Extravaganza” (Dec. 7-8), “The Nutcracker” (Dec. 14-15), Disney’s “The Jungle Book” (Jan. 11-19) and the Elvis Presley jukebox musical “All Shook Up” (Feb. 1-9).


TexARTS is a nonprofit organization that offers year-round classes in acting, voice, dance and the visual arts as well as completely staged youth and professional productions. TexARTS’ mission is to cultivate a thriving arts community by exposing all people to the visual and performing arts.
