Ordinary Days debuted at New York’s Roundabout Theatre in 2009. Its composer and lyricist, Adam Gwon, received the Kleban Prize for excellence in writing for musical theatre. This production will continue Penfold's commitment to the "chamber musical" as an important and exciting piece of American theatre.
Ordinary Days Adam Gwon Penfold theatre Austin TXThis production is Ordinary Days' Texas premiere. Interlaced with humor and romance, the story follows four young adults in New York City who are searching for connection and purpose. Each one takes their own path – some neurotically funny and others deeply touching – but they all find ways to let go of what holds them back and embrace the beauty of each “ordinary day.” For a full synopsis of the show, visit http://is.gd/IgIpoz

CHARACTERS: Warren. Male, 20s; Deb. Female, 20s; Jason. Male, 30s; Claire. Female, 30s.

To schedule a time, please email Ryan Crowder at rcrowder@penfoldtheatre.org. If you are available only during certain times, please tell us so. We will send you a confirmation email with your audition time. The date and time for callbacks are TBA.
What should I prepare? Please bring a headshot and resume, along with two songs (one uptempo, one ballad) in the style of the show. Each cut should be no more than 30-40 seconds long (about 32 bars for the uptempo and 16 bars the ballad). You may sing something from the show. Please show your range and ability to handle text.

An accompanist will be provided. Please bring sheet music with cuts marked clearly. No loose sheet music please. The accompanist will not transpose for you. We are looking for actors who sing well. Ability to perform in a "speak-sing" style is a plus. Ordinary Days is a contemporary musical written in "contemporary narrative" style (ex. Mills, Lowdermilk, Goldrick & Heisler).

Opinion: Robert Faires on Now Now Oh Now, Boom and Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, Austin Chronicle

Austin Chronicle Arts Editor Robert Faires offers reflections on learning at the theatre in his engaging portmanteau review of the Rude Mechs' Now Now Oh Now, Capital T's Boom by Peter Sinn Nachtrieb, and the Doctuh Mistuh production of the musical Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson directed by Michael McKelvey and featuring David Gallagher. Turns out theatre is a great place for getting schooled

Robert Faires, Fri., June 15, 2012

The woman said that she was going to speak to us about evolutionary biology.
Now, had this been back in my school days, that declaration would have shot a torrent of Barton Springs-chilled water through my veins. See, at some point in my adolescence, science and math stopped coming easily to me, and the deeper into those subjects I ventured, the more I floundered. In my ears then, "evolutionary biology" would have rung with the sound of being dropped into the middle of the Gulf of Mexico without a flotation device.

But I was not in a classroom, and those days were long behind me. In fact, this was just a few weeks ago, and I was inside the Off Center, seated at a long table along with some two dozen other people, and the woman addressing us was a company member of the Rude Mechanicals, playing a character in the troupe's most recent production, Now Now Oh Now. Now, she did indeed go on to discuss concepts in evolutionary biology, and most of it struck me as beyond your basic Darwin – the primary notion being that nature may select for beauty as well as survival skills – but rather than being at sea, I was thoroughly engaged. I mean, I caught that wave way out in the Gulf and rode it all the way in to the Padre shore. What she talked about was not only clear to me, but it's stayed with me in the days since, and I've been much more attentive to birds, wondering about the extent to which sheer pleasure has shaped the development of their coloration and songs.

From the people who brought you Evil Dead, The Musical -- DM Productions is proud to present the Texas premiere of one of the most talked about musicals in years, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. An exhilarating and white-knuckled look at one of our nation's founding rock stars, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson recreates and reinvents the life of "Old Hickory," from his humble beginnings on the Tennessee frontier to his days as our seventh Commander-in-Chief. It also asks the question, is wanting to have a beer with someone reason enough to elect him? What if he's really, really hot?

The show portrays Andrew Jackson as an Emo Rock Star and scrutinizes the American politic machine with wit and cynicism.   The theatricality of BBAJ ranges from hard-edge Green Day-like concert to PBS historical recreation to vaudevillian buffoonery.  Nothing is sacred, especially not the rise and fall of the man whom many consider America’s most popular president.  “Populish Yea Yea.”

The cast features David Gallagher, Haley Smith Montgomery, Jose Villareal, Libby Dees Detling, Aaron Alexander, Rebecca Robinson, Scott Swanson, Sarah Marie Curry, Joey Banks, Eve Sampaga, Stephen Jack, Joel Mercado-See, Nathan Jerkins, David Ponton, Alan Marequiota and Trevor Detling.

The production staff includes Michael McKelvey (stage & musical director), Ben Wolfe (Assistant Director), Glenda Barnes (costume designer), Joe Carpenter (set designer), Rocker Verastique and Danny Herman (Choreographers) and Erin  Fleming (lighting designer).

About Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson:   Book by Alex Timbers; Music & Lyrics by Michael Friedman. Developed by New York-based experimental company Les Freres Corbusier, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson had workshop productions in August 2006 at the Williamstown Theatre Festival and in May 2007 at the New 42nd Street Studios, New York. It premiered in January 2008 in Los Angeles at the Kirk Douglas Theatre, produced by Center Theatre Group. Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson made its New York premiere in May 2009 at The Public Theater in New York in a concert version, and returned to run from March through June, 2010.  The show premiered on Broadway at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on October 13, 2010 and ran until January 2, 2011.

Doctuh Mistuh Productions Auditioning Actors for Texas Premiere of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson

Michael McKelvey is coming back!!

Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson

Michael McKelveyFrom the people who brought you Evil Dead, The Musical, DM Productions is proud to present the Texas premiere of one of the most talked about musicals in years, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson. The piece tells the story of America's first political maverick. A.J. kicked British butt, shafted the Indians and smacked down the Spaniards all in the name of these United States--who cares if he didn't have permission?

An exhilarating and white-knuckled look at one of our nation's founding rock stars, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson recreates and reinvents the life of "Old Hickory," from his humble beginnings on the Tennessee frontier to his days as our seventh Commander-in-Chief. It also asks the question, is wanting to have a beer with someone reason enough to elect him? What if he's really, really hot? [Visit the Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson page on MTI ShowSpace by clicking here.]

Doctuh Mistuh Productions is soliciting audition videos from Texas actors for the musical to be produced June 6-July 1, 2012 at the the Blue Theatre in Austin. There is some compensation for actors and crew.

Bloody Bloody Audition Information:

Actors are asked to do the following:

1) Send an email to doctuhmistuh@gmail.com with your contact information. I will add you to our gmail contacts, which will make you eligible to add your video to our YouTube page.

2) Please submit a two-three minute video that includes your slate or introduction, 60-90 seconds of a rock song of your choosing and a 60 second political rant.

  • You can sing a cappella, accompanied, self-accompanied, tracked accompaniment, etc.

  • You may sing a cut from a song from the show.

  • The “political rant” can be something you write, a historical political speech, something you take from the political debates, etc. Let you creativity run wild.

A Year with Frog and Toad, musical for families, SummerStock Austin at the Rollins Theatre, weekends July 23 - August 7

A Year with Frog and Toad

by Michael Meigs

I got up and cheered for the curtain call of A Year with Frog and Toad, and I happily accepted the invitation from director Michael McKelvey for audience members to mingle with the cast onstage afterwards. This musical was so appealing and well executed that it lured me out of the comfortable semi-anonymity of the audience to let these performers know how much I appreciated them. And, incidentally, to inquire whether we would be seeing them on Austin stages anytime soon.

Ryan Borses as Toad, Zach Dailey as Frog SummerStock AustinMichael McKelvey might well have stood up and cheered at audition time for this show, when he saw the two principals Zach Dailey and Ryan Borses do their stuff for the first time. Not only could they sing, dance and dialogue with the best of them, but they were the perfect somatypes for the two amphibian friends who since the 1970's have been entertaining us and luring youngsters into the adventure of reading. Zach as Frog is a broad-shouldered, rounded and thoughtful endomorph, and Ryan as Toad is the slim and energetic ectomorph, as lively as an animated Etch-A-Sketch character. It's a classic comic contrast. It works as well in Lobel's books and in this singing, dancing charmer as it did with Laurel and Hardy or Abbott and Costello.

Arts Reporting: Robert Faires Interviews Departing Musical Theatre Director Michael McKelvey for the Austin Chronicle

Mr. Show Busy
Michael McKelvey's just a guy who cain't say no (to musicals)

by Robert Faires

You gotta figure that in Austin's arts community there must be a quintet of McKelvey brothers, all of them, like the sons of George Foreman, boasting the same first name (in this case, Michael). How else to explain the fact that at any given moment in a season you can have a Michael McKelvey directing a musical here, a Michael McKelvey music directing a musical there, one composing music for some play, another performing in a concert, and yet another conducting a choral program?

Well, as difficult as it may be to believe, no band of brothers is shouldering all these musical responsibilities, nor has Dr. McKelvey figured out a way to clone himself. He's doing all this all by his lonesome. An octuple threat (you can add educator and producer to his credit line of singer/actor/director/music director/composer/conductor), McKelvey has for years been making use of his copious talents in, I kid you not, dozens of projects per season, across the length and breadth of the community: St. Stephen's Episcopal School, St. Edward's University, Austin Playhouse, Austin Shakespeare, Zilker Theatre Productions, TexARTS, Penfold Theatre Company, his own Doctuh Mistuh Productions, and the youth theatre training program he co-founded with Ginger Morris, Summer Stock Austin.

This summer provides a classic case study in just how crazy busy McKelvey keeps himself. In June, he directed and music directed Penfold's charming chamber musical I Love You Because. He then directed and music directed the Zilker Summer Musical, Footloose, which opened July 8. Since then, he's been hard at work on the three Summer Stock musicals that open this week and the next: Urinetown: The Musical and A Year With Frog and Toad, both of which he's directing and music directing, and The Producers, which he's just music directing (unless, that is, you factor in that he's co-producing all three shows).
