This fall the Overtime Theater will proudly present a new musical based on an award-winning hit local film. Opening October 8, 2010, Dr. S Battles the Sex Crazed Reefer Zombies: The Movie: The Musical is the world premiere production of an original, new rock horror musical.
The film-turned-musical recounts the tale of Mary Jane, an all-American sweetheart who goes parking with her boyfriend, Billy. When Billy smokes some atomic reefer and transforms into a sex-crazed zombie, it's up to our hero, Dr. S, to save the day! Dr. S must stop the madness that he helped create. An experiment to fight the red menace has gone horribly wrong, and now zombies are on the rise. With trusty shotgun and a deadpan, brutal sense of humor, Dr. S takes Mary Jane from the clutches of evil and battles his way back into town in a blood-soaked, fight-filled extravaganza of action, gore, and rock!
Produced by Film Classics Productions in 2008, the film version of Dr. S Battles the Sex Crazed Reefer Zombies has been shown at such theaters and events as the Chicago International Film Festival, San Antonio Horrific Film Fest, Another Hole in the Head Film Festival (San Francisco, California), Washington DC International Horror Film Festival, Leeds International Film Festival (Leeds, England), and in early September 2010, the internationally renowned Dragon*Con Independent Film Festival (Atlanta, Georgia), where it will be only one of five feature-length movies screened during the festival.
In Winter 2010, following a screening at the Overtime Theater, the idea was formed to turn the film into a live stage musical guaranteed to rock the socks off the audience. Dr. S Battles the Sex Crazed Reefer Zombies: The Movie: The Musical will take the story to even more outlandish heights with the script and lyrics by the original team of director Bryan Ortiz and writers Evan Boston and James Hartz (who also serves as the Overtime Theater’s artistic director). Jaime Ramirez is the music director of the show. Jaime also was the music director of The Brain That Wouldn’t Die, another world-premiere new musical staged at the Overtime Theater in October 2009.
James Hartz explained why the team decided to take Dr. S to the stage:
“We thought it would be a great way to introduce Dr. S to a whole new audience. Transitioning from film to stage gave us an opportunity to find new ways of telling the story. The nature of musicals allows us to explore the feelings and relationships of the characters in a deeper and more expansive way, especially between Dr. S and Mary Jane. We strived to make the music have as much variety as possible while remaining cohesive. We put in rock, doo-wop, ballads, tangos, and more! It's been a really fun and exciting process crafting the piece and I think that fun and excitement will carry over to the performance, particularly because of our excellent cast!”
