Austin Shakespeare 2012-2013 and Auditions, August 11 and 25


Austin Shakespeare, TexasAustin Shakespeare will conduct auditions in August for its 2012-13 season General auditions are Saturday, August 11, 11 am - 1 pm. Auditions for Shakespeare alumni are on Saturday, August 25 12 pm - 4 pm. Both auditions take place in the auditorium at Waller Creek School, located at 41st St. & Red River.

Now beginning its 29th Season, Austin Shakespeare, the professional company will hold open auditions for Equity and non-Equity roles for Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and Noel Coward's Design for Living for the Rollins Theater, and Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Talefor Zilker Park in May. Actors of all ethnic/racial background are encouraged to audition. All roles for the season are currently open except for “Gilda” in Design for Living, which will be played by Helen Merino. On occasion, Austin Shakespeare uses cross-gender casting. Also, age range noted in character descriptions is a matter of appearance.

Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Performances: November 7 – 25, 2012 at the Long Center’s Rollins Theater. A new adaptation of the romance of the proud Mr. Darcy and the clever Elizabeth Bennett and features extensive 19th century ballroom dance. Joseph Hanreddy and J.R. Sullivan’s new version has been enormously successful at regional theaters around the U.S., recently at Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Rehearsals begin Oct. 9, 2012. British dialect is required for consideration for Pride and Prejudice.

Noel Coward’s Design for Living. Performances: February 6 – 24, 2013 at the Long Center’s Rollins Theater. From one of the world’s greatest wits, a provocative story of three friends who engage in a complicated, comic, and loving, relationship. Rehearsals begin January 8, 2013. British dialect is required for consideration for Pride and Prejudice.

Shakespeare’s The Winter’s Tale. Performances: May 1-26, 2013. FREE Shakespeare in the Park at the Zilker Hillside Theatre. A dark romance fueled by jealousy and then by joy, set in Latin America and staged with tango (choreographed by Monica Caivano of Esquina Tango) and culminating at Carnaval in Rio (Austin Samba). Rehearsals begin April 2, 2013.

Rehearsal schedules: (Tues-Fri. 7-10 pm; Sat. 12-5 pm; Sunday 4-9 pm). Performance schedules: 8 pm Thurs-Sat and Sun 3 pm for Pride and Prejudice and Design for Living and Thurs-Sun at 8 pm for The Winter’s Tale.

Auditioners should prepare a 1-2 minute piece that relates to the season. Audition speeches should be memorized or read with familiarity. Using text from the scripts under consideration is welcome. Auditioners should familiarize themselves with the plays they are auditioning for. Scripts available now at Austin Creative Alliance, located at 701 Tillery St., Ste. A-8. $10 deposit for 24-hour script check out. Hours 10 am – 6 pm. After Aug. 1, sides from each play will be available. Feel free to audition with your own selection.
