Auditions for Supporting Roles in True West by Sam Shepard, Oh Dragon Theatre Company, February 13

Oh Dragon Theatre Company is pleased to announce auditions for their upcoming production of Sam Shepard's True West, directed by Carl Gonzales, to take place Wednesday, February 13th, 2013 from 7pm – 10pm at The Robichaux Studio (7612 B Hwy. 71 Austin, TX 78735, on the 2nd floor just above Studio E -- click for map). Contact ohdragontheatrecompany@gmail.com

True West Sam Shepard Oh Dragon Theatre Austin TX
Performance dates: April 5th, 6th, 7th, 12th, 13th, and 14th at a location to be determined.

*The roles of Austin and Lee have already been cast. We will be casting for the following characters:

Mom - An absurdist vision of a powerless mother. (Age 25 – 50 years)
Saul Kimmer - A slick Hollywood producer. He is as sincere as anyone who is motivated only by profit can be. (Ages 25 – 35 years)

Be prepared to participate in cold readings from the script. Please bring a copy of your headshot and resume.

True West examines the relationship between Austin, a screenwriter, and his older brother Lee. It is set in the kitchen of their mother's home. Austin is housesitting while their mother is in Alaska, and there he is confronted by his brother, who proceeds to bully his way into staying at the house and using Austin's car. In addition, the screenplay which Austin is pitching to his connection in Hollywood somehow gets taken over by the pushy con-man tactics of Lee, and the brothers find themselves forced to cooperate in the creation of a story that will make or break both their lives. In the process, the conflict between the brothers creates a heated situation in which their roles as successful family man and nomadic drifter are somehow reversed, and each man finds himself admitting that he had somehow always wished he were in the other's shoes.

The Shakespeare at Winedale Spring Class will give two performances of All’s Well That Ends Well at the Winedale Theatre Barn on April 26th and 27th at 7:00. These performances are the culmination of a semester of coursework focusing on ‘Shakespeare’s Problem Plays in Performance.’ Tickets are $10; $5 for UT ID-holders and students. Tickets are available at www.shakespeare-winedale.org or by calling (512) 471-4726.

‘Tis not the many oaths that makes the truth, But the plain single vow that is vow’d true. – IV.ii

All’s Well That Ends Well is an adult fairy tale that follows the low-born Helena’s arduous journey to win the love of the haughty Count Bertram. Unrequited love, reversed gender roles, aristocratic pride, and wartime lies arise on the journey, presented to the audience with a thorny mixture of romantic optimism and real-world pessimism.

“This is one of my favorite Shakespeare plays, and one far too few people have read or seen,” said Shakespeare at Winedale Director and Regents Professor, James Loehlin. “It feels very contemporary in the way it mixes drama and comedy, and in its resourceful but vulnerable heroine, Helena. One of the characters says that 'the web of our life is of a mingled yarn, good and ill together,' and I think that sums up the outlook of this very funny but bittersweet comedy.”

Shakespeare at Winedale is a program within the University of Texas English Department that invites students from all disciplines to learn about Shakespeare through the experience of performing his works. Since 1970, hundreds of students have performed Shakespeare’s immortal words in the Winedale Theatre Barn, using textual interpretation, creativity, and passion to bring the plays to life. The students of the Spring Class come together to explore several plays throughout the UT spring semester. The course includes three weekends at the Winedale Historical Center, where students immerse themselves in the study of Shakespeare surrounded by the beauty of the Texas countryside. Their coursework culminates in a final presentation of their studies: two performances in the Winedale Theatre Barn.

Script Available: The Sniper's Nest by Lisa Soland

The Sniper's Nest by Lisa SolandDear Central Texas Live Theatre community,

This year marks the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy's assassination, and perhaps presents us artists with an opportunity to reexamine the events that make up one of the most controversial periods of American history.

I am a regional published playwright who has written a new play entitled The Sniper's Nest. The Sniper's Nest is the story of the real-life love affair between CIA agent Lee Harvey Oswald and young research scientist Judyth Vary Baker. During the summer of 1963 they worked together in New Orleans to develop a biological weapon to kill Fidel Castro. This is a true tale of espionage, still to this day, kept secret from the public for reasons much more sinister than just covering up an assassination of a president.

The Sniper's Nest is based on Judyth Vary Baker's book, Me and Lee, and Ms. Baker made herself available during the writing of the play. The Sniper’s Nest premiered at the Clayton Center for the Arts in Maryville, Tennessee, November 29 through Dec. 2 of 2012, and Ms. Baker attended the Dec. 1 and 2 performances. She exclaimed at intermission, "It's brilliant," and later wrote to me, "I believe God led you to my book and that this is one play that will not only touch hearts today, but always. It transcends 2013 because it is about love and sacrifice, and this is always new."

The cast and crew of The Sniper's Nest then flew to NYC for a staged reading, sponsored by the Dramatists Guild. The Southeastern Theatre Conference accepted the new play into its Fringe Festival so we will be remounting The Sniper's Nest and taking it to Louisville, Kentucky, the first week of March.

For more information regarding the production rights for The Sniper's Nest, visit the playwright's website at www.LisaSoland.com or email me direct at LisaSoland@aol.com

All the best,

Seussical Vista Ridge High School Austin TXTony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty (LUCKY STIFF, MY FAVORITE YEAR, ONCE ON THIS ISLAND, and RAGTIME) have lovingly brought to life all of our favorite Dr. Seuss characters, including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie, and a little boy with a big imagination--Jojo. The colorful characters transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos.

The Cat in the Hat tells the story of Horton, an elephant who discovers a speck of dust containing Whos, including Jojo, a Who child sent off to military school for thinking too many "thinks." Horton faces a double challenge--not only must he protect the Whos from a world of naysayers and dangers, but he must guard an abandoned egg, left to his care by the irresponsible Mayzie La Bird. Although Horton faces ridicule, danger, kidnapping, and a trial, the intrepid Gertrude McFuzz never loses faith in him. Ultimately, the powers of friendship, loyalty, family, and community are challenged and emerge triumphant.

Seussical the Musical Hits the Stage Next Week

Edie Monceaux, J-1 Reporter
January 22, 2013

Dr. Seuss will soon be taking over. The theater department will perform Seussical, a fantastic show based on several of Dr. Seuss’s classic books, running Jan. 31 – Feb. 2 in the auditorium.

Tickets are $8 and can be purchased . Shows will run at 7 p.m. on Jan. 31 – Feb. 2 along with a matinee at 2 p.m. on Feb. 2.

“Usually our rehearsals are from 4 p.m. – 6 p.m.,” sophomore choreographer Ross Lombardo said. “We rehearse most days of the week unless there’s an important event.”

Rehearsing and running through the show, from the time they step in the auditorium until it’s time to go home, the cast and crew waste no time.

“The musical had a slow start,” Lombardo said. “But now we can see the show, the pieces are all put together and it shows.”

With these students, there’s more perks in the making besides just the performance itself — it’s the people they get to work with and get to know.

“One of my favorite parts is being able to work with the upperclassmen and sophomores,” freshmen Adele Simms said. “It’s fun to see how everyone interacts and gets along and works together.”

With how much they’ve spent working on the show and putting it together, it has become more than just a show to these students, it has become something they all have grown to love and something they will always remember.

“This has given me something new to be proud of and flaunt,” Lombardo said. “I don’t think the musical has impacted me, but it has enhanced me definitely.”

Tickets are $8 and can be purchased online.
