EARTH is an original, non-traditional, collaborative theatre piece with ritual, dance, and song to be performed on stage in a huge mound of dirt. EARTH conveys environmental awareness through stories of the Earth from the mythos of diverse world cultures. Part of The Elementals series that Bonnie Cullum has been creating for several years, EARTH is a cornerstone of VORTEX's 25th season of new work.
Seeking: Actors who dance and sing. Drummers and percussionists.
All performers must be courageous and passionate about the Earth, excited about the collaborative creation of new material, and be comfortable with getting dirty.
Preparation: a) Resume and Headshot, b) 1 minute monologue AND 1 minute of song (any genre) to be performed with accompanist. No a cappella. Accompanist provided. Percussionists—bring drum and abilities and tricks.
Schedule: Workshops to develop ensemble and material in December-January. Rehearsals in February-March. Performances in March-April 2013. Performers will receive a stipend.
Bonnie Cullum (VORTEX Producing Artistic Director) is widely recognized for her original collaborative work. She received has received four B. Iden Payne Awards for her direction of new work (Sarah Silver Hands, Troades: The Legend of the Women of Troy, Despair’s Book of Dreams and the Sometimes Radio, Moby Dick) with dozens of other nominations in her 25 year career as an Austin theatre director and producer. Her ritual theatre work, Dark Goddess, enjoyed five individual productions over seven years and firmly established her style in collaborative and sacred performance. She was inducted into the Austin Arts Hall of Fame in 2009 and has thrice been recognized as Best Director by the Austin Chronicle’s Best of Austin.
