The Silver Spur Theater box office is open and buzzing for its first production, the award-winning “Same Time, Next Year.”
Playwright Bernard Slade’s witty, nostalgic and romantic comedy opens at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 13, and runs weekends through May 5.
Guest Director KD Sperling of Round Rock has cast Steve Smith of Temple and Kathryn Tait of Round Rock as “George” and “Doris,” whose love affair includes an annual weekend rendezvous at a California inn for 25 years, despite their being loyal to their families the rest of the time.
Changing manners, morals and attitudes, from 1951 through the mid-1970s are mirrored in the dialogue and costumes, and helped make this 1975 play one of the most popular romantic comedies of the century,
Tony Blackman, the Silver Spur’s long-time Technical Director, is handling set design, lighting and the vintage costumes.
“‘Same Time…’ ran for four years on Broadway, was a successful motion picture and remains one of the most widely produced plays in theater history,” said Sperling,” who previously directed “Bell, Book and Candle” at the Silver Spur and appeared in leading roles “Steel Magnolias,” “Counter Girls” and “Nunsense.”
“The show’s six hysterically funny scenes, each five years apart, have special effects to capture the prevailing mood of America in each period,” Sperling noted.
The show will run at 108 Royal St. in historic Downtown Salado at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, April 13 – May 5. (No matinees.) Admissions are $18 with $15 discount tickets for seniors, military and students. Group rates are available.
