The AZTLAN Dance Company presents SwitchBlade: An Eastside Story, an original dance performance that shares dynamic, moving stories about Eastside barrio culture. Contemporary eastside barrio life takes center stage as dancers narrate the languages and cultural code-switching that Chicano' engage daily to navigate the dual, and often conflicting, worlds of Latino and mainstream cultures.
Under the shadow of downtown high-rise buildings and on the horizon of a bustling downtown, Austin's Chicano culture resists dislocation from its historical roots in East Austin. Vatos, Cholas, and Chucos become visual, moving marquees of resistance, defiance, and independence. It is through dance that AZTLAN offers deep insight about barrio life and the important experiences that have shaped community. Orale!
