It's A Wonderful Life, a Live Radio Play by Joe Landry, Penfold Theatre, December 6 - 22, 2013

1 CTXLT review 225

by Michael Meigs

WL01 cover opt300Ryan Crowder(photo: Kimberley Mead)This is a warm, simple entertainment for the chill of the holiday season -- and it was so chilly in the Old Settler's Park in Round Rock last week that park employees had turned off the water at Rice's Crossing Store to prevent damage to the pipes. Penfold folk, using that recreation of a village gathering place for their third annual staging of Joe Landry's adaptation of the 1946 Frank Capra film with Jimmy Stewart, had the right phone numbers to get the bathrooms working again by the intermission in this ninety-minute staging.

Hot cider and cookies are available to help against the chill, but the real warmth is provided by the evident enjoyment of the five-person cast as they bring to life the story that helped affirm hometown values and American identity after the dark years of World War II. Grovers Corners is really Anytown, U.S.A.; George Bailey is the hometown boy who yearned for broader horizons but found himself bound by family and community obligations. Clarence Oddbody, Angel Second Class, who has been trying to qualify for his wings for the past two hundred years, is a sort of George Bailey of the heavenly spheres. The Powers Above set Clarence the task of bringing George through his darkest hour when the wily Mr. Potter, Scrooge-like as they come, is intent on driving our hero and his family savings and loan out of business and, perhaps, entirely out of existence.

RyanErinFront275Ryan Crowder, Erin Barlow (photo: Kimberley Mead)Capra didn't imagine that the film would be linked to the holidays. It lost in all its Oscar nominations to the post-war story The Best Years of Our Lives, except that for Technical Achievement (for making non-crunchy snow). In the 1970s CBS began showing it at the Christmas season, and the tradition was established. This radio play version by Joe Landry is one of the most popular scripts in American community theatre. Like Penfold, the Classic Theatre of San Antonio is making it an annual presentation. The Bastrop Opera House, Austin Playhouse and Gaslight Baker Theatre in Lockhart have all done it in recent years.

Surely you've seen the motion picture. If not, you can borrow the DVD from Netflix or purchase a streaming version from Amazon.com, or just watch it in HD for free on YouTube. Or maybe visit the Zach Theatre this month to appreciate the one-man version being enacted by Martin Burke, one of Austin's favorites.

OnAir275opt(photo: Kimberley Mead)What you won't get from any of those versions, however, is the opportunity to time travel. Landry's reworking of the familiar story puts you into the audience for a radio theatre version in the 1940's. You're cordially invited to respond to the APPLAUSE sign, you'll watch the creation of those ingenious radio sound effects, and -- most of all -- you'll be engaged by the deft ballet before the big old microphones established by director Emily Rankin for these very capable actors Each carries a bulky binder with the script. That's largely to complete the illusion, for they all certainly know their lines by heart.

Gather around! The intrepid Louis de Rougemont invites you to hear his amazing story of bravery, survival and celebrity that left the nineteenth-century world spellbound.

Written by the Pulitzer-winning playwright Donald Margulies and based on actual events, Shipwrecked! takes audience members of all ages on a high seas adventure populated by exotic islanders, giant sea turtles and a monstrous man-eating octopus. Louis’ hair-raising tale – told by three actors and an explorer-sized helping of theatrical magic – challenges us to wonder how far we are willing to blur the line between fact and fiction in order to leave our mark on the world.

Shipwrecked! is the third production in the “Penfold in the Park” series, an annual offering of free, outdoor summer theatre, made possible by a partnership with the City of Round Rock Parks & Recreation Department. Previous productions included The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Abridged (2010) and Servant of Two Masters (2011).

Last summer the series was put on pause while the city renovated the amphitheater and surrounding area into the beautiful new Centennial Plaza. The plaza officially opened April 27th of this year in conjunction with the City’s Centennial Celebration, which commemorated the 100th anniversary of Round Rock’s founding.

Each performance will feature a different special guest who will kick off the evening with a 7:30pm pre-show. Guest artists from past years include the Round Rock Symphony, Ballet Folklorico, Central Texas All-Star Drum Line and many others. Audiences are welcome to arrive early with their own food and drink, or to purchase it from the concessions tent. A list of pre-show artists and food offerings will be posted online later in May.

No reservations are required. Donations are appreciated. Penfold Theatre Company is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Shipwrecked! concludes Penfold’s fifth anniversary season.

This production contains very mature themes and strong language.

A Chick & A Dude Productions presents David Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross--a hard-hitting portrayal of cutthroat office politics--through sharp dialogue and strong social commentary. The 1984 Pulitzer Prize winner for drama is directed by Melissa Livingston-Weaver (2003 B. Iden Payne winner for Best Director of a Drama and 2011 B. Iden Payne nominee for Best Director of a Drama).

A dark dramatic comedy, Glengarry follows the lives of four smalltime, cutthroat real estate salesmen grinding out a living by pushing overpriced, undesirable plots of land on reluctant buyers in a never-ending scramble for their share of the American dream. Company big wigs Mitch and Murray declare a month-long 'sales contest'. The top salesman wins a new Cadillac and the bottom two men lose it all--egos, money and their jobs. The four salesmen sweet-talk, plan, and scheme for the perfect client and the hot 'Glengarry' leads, which Mitch and Murray make clear are for 'closers' only. How far will the four go to get to the leads in order to schedule a 'sit' at the perfect victim's residence?

Alvida and the Airship Pirates, Weird City Theatre Company

Patti Neff-Tiven as Alvida (www.weirdcitytheatre.com)

I was on the last airship with Alvida out of Weird City on March 12 and as sometimeshappens with scribes errant, I got too busy and distracted to send her, author John Carroll and their band of adventures a proper bread-and-butter note.

Your mother may have admonished you about good manners, as does the mother of my children. It’s never too late, although sometimes it’s too late to do much good. I prefer the warm glow of virtue associated with writing the first review to hit the electronic doorstep, for there’s the cyberghost of a chance that it’ll attract another spectator. Or, to use the Britishism entirely appropriate to this steampunk adventure, it’ll put an additional bum on the seat.

Patti Neff-Tiven and Bridget Farias (image: Weird City Theatre Company)The Weird citizens like to play with their plays. With this script John gave colleague Patti Teff-Niven as the eponymous Alvida a hand into chick adventure with the warm and vivacious Bridget Farias as her best buddy. The Alvida stage at the familiar imagination station of the Dougherty Arts Center featured a fine crew of female troopers on both sides as well as Weird regulars Kevin Gouldthorpe and Robert Berry.

I confess that I don’t know much about steampunk, a curious genre that seems half Victorian and half sci-fi, but I’ve noticed that it’s capturing a lot of imagination these days. Earlier this week, while I was checking background for the steampunk Tempest that Frank Benge is putting together for the Sam Bass Community Theatre in Round Rock, I found that there’s even a steampunk Shakespeare website encouraging submissions of bard-derived steampunk adventures. That invitational tournament is open until the end of May.
