Bring on the lovers, liars and clowns! Allegro Stage Company presents Broadway's classic musical farce, A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM. We are teaming up once again with Northwest Vista College Drama Department, following our award-winning production of CABARET, for a brand new production at the Palmetto Center for the Arts.

Auditions in San Antonio for A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Allegro Theatre Company, January 26

Next up for Allegro Stage Company: “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum,” slated to play April 11-20 at Northwest Vista College’s Palmetto Center for the Arts.


Director Tim Hedgepeth has already cast Rick Sanchez, who gave a memorable performance as the Emcee in Allegro’s “Cabaret” earlier this year, as Pseudolus. The rest of the roles are up for grabs.


Auditions start at noon Jan. 26 at the Palmetto Center, 3535 N. Ellison, San Antonio, 78251 (click for map). Those who want to try out are asked to show up ready to perform 16 bars of “an upbeat, comical song,” according to the audition notice; an accompanist will be on hand. Also in the notice: “Pratfalls encouraged!” And dress comfortably for the dance audition.

Another date for potential cast members to note: Rehearsals start March 3.


Besides Hedgepeth, the creative team includes choreographer Wendy Ellis, music supervisor/co-producer Tom Masinter and co-producer Mellissa Marlowe.

Please prepare a musical number that best showcases your vocal talent. A CD player and pianist will be provided at Auditions. Cold readings from the script will follow vocal auditions. Performance dates are Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays Feb. 22^nd-Mar. 10^th 2013. Attendance at Crunch Week rehearsals Feb. 18^th-21^st and all performances is mandatory.


A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM is a non-stop laugh-fest in which Pseudolus, a crafty slave, struggles to win the hand of a beautiful but slow-witted courtesan named Philia, for his young master, Hero, in exchange for freedom. The plot twists and turns with cases of mistaken identity, slamming doors, and a showgirl or two.


This unforgettable, hysterical musical allows a terrific ensemble of comedic actors to shine–”something for everyone, a comedy tonight!
