The Southwestern University Department of Theatre treads Into the Woods for one weekend with Stephen Sondheim's most popular and successful musical. Putting beloved fairy tale characters in a new light, the family-friendly production runs March 2nd through 6th
at Jones Theatre in Georgetown.

As the tale begins with "Once upon time, in a far-off kingdom, lived a fair young maiden, a sad young lad and a childless baker and his wife…," the musical tells the story of a baker and his wife who journey into the woods on a quest to lift a witch's curse. On the way, they cross paths with Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, Jack and the Beanstalk, Cinderella and a menagerie of other fairy tale characters.
Each character pursues individual wishes until the stories become entangled in unexpected ways - revealing what happens after "happily ever after." With a book by by James Lapine - inspired by Bruno Bettelheim's 1976 book The Uses of Enchantment - the musical portrays the complications of modern society and the difficulties encountered on the paths of life.

Sondheim's witty score includes enchanting musical theatre gems, including "Children Will Listen," "Giants in the Sky" and "No One Is Alone." From part of the musical team that created legendary works such as West Side Story, Gypsy and Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods remains one of Sondheim's most-produced works. It won three Tony Awards in 1988.

The award-winning cast includes Sara Burke, Andrew Cannata, Sarah Marie Curry, Libby Dees, Amy Downing, Kirk German, Joe Hartman, Leslie Hollingsworth, Jarret Mallon, Michael Muenchow, David Ponton, Laura Powell, Lindsey Priour, Chris Skillern, Haley Smith, Courtney Wissinger, and Molly Wissinger.

The production staff is comprised of Michael McKelvey (Stage & Musical Director), Joe Carpenter (Set Designer), Scott Tatum (Lighting Designer) and Courtney Wissinger-Eiland (Choreographer).

ABOUT COMPANY: COMPANY premiered in 1970 at the Alvin Theatre under the direction of the famed Harold Prince. The book was by George Furth with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The cast was headed by Dean Jones, Donna McKechnie, Elaine Stritch, and Charles Kimbrough. COMPANY has been revived numerous times around the globe and the original production won six Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Lyrics.

Unlike most book musicals, which follow a clearly delineated plot, Company is a concept musical composed of short vignettes, presented in no particular chronological order, linked by a celebration for Bobby's 35th birthday. Robert seems to have it all except a wife. Throughout the show we meet his friends and former lovers all while Robert weighs the pros and cons of married life.

Company was among the first musicals to deal with adult problems through its music. As Sondheim put it, "Company does deal with upper middle-class people with upper middle-class problems. Broadway theater has been for many years supported by those people. They really want to escape, and here we're saying we'll bring it right back in their faces ... what they came to a musical to avoid, they suddenly find facing them on the stage."

One of Broadway’s most neglected masterpieces, the romantic and achingly beautiful A Little Night Music deals with the universal subject of love, in all its wondrous, humorous and ironic forms.

In early twentieth-century Sweden, middle-aged Fredrik Egerman brings his 18-year-old bride Anne to a play starring his former mistress, Desirée Armfeldt. Soon, Fredrik and Desirée resume their romance, incurring the wrath of her current lover, a pompous Count. The situation culminates in a weekend at a country estate, with Fredrik, Anne, Desirée and the Count in attendance, as well as Fredrik’s son (who is hopelessly in love with Anne), Desirée’s illegitimate daughter, the Count’s manic-depressive wife and the Egerman’s lusty maid. And there, under the summer night, things are set right.
