About SummerStock Austin: Since July 2005, college and high school students from across Texas meet to mount several productions with professionals from Austin and around the country in a one-of-a-kind experience. They work as a traditional stock company; each member performs, designs, builds and assists on the various aspects of theatrical productions. Similar programs charge tuition, but Summer Stock Austin offers this experience to all participants virtually free of charge.

The company is led by a host of professionals with experience ranging from Austin to Broadway. Through this work, college students begin making invaluable connections as they embark on their professional careers. High school students will have a similarly unique experience as they gain first-hand knowledge of working in a collegiate setting. Moreover, each student leaves the stock season with pride, knowing that he/she has played an integral part of a professional production.

Summer Stock Austin’s philosophy is to create an environment of shared learning by incorporating high school students, college students and professionals in a fast-paced production series where everyone involved shares in the responsibility of creating high-quality theatre.

Summer Stock Austin is a joint program of Austin Playhouse, Zilker Theatre Productions and The Long Center for the Performing Arts.

Past SSA Productions: Footloose, Much Ado About Nothing, West Side Story, Rumors, The Stinky Cheeseman and Other Stoopid Tales, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Assassins, Oklahoma, Bat Boy, Jack and the Beanstalk, Sweeney Todd, Little Shop of Horrors, Cabaret, Sweet Charity, A Year with Frog and Toad, The Producers, Urinetown, Legally Blonde, Chess

Book by MARK O'DONNELL & THOMAS MEEHAN | Music by MARC SHAIMAN | Lyrics by MARC SHAIMAN & SCOTT WHITTMAN | Based on the 1988 JOHN WATERS film | Directed by DAVE STEAKLEY | Musical Direction by ALLEN ROBERTSON | Choreography by ROBIN LEWIS

ZACH's GLBT Hairspray Wilde Party is July 7th.

Move over Baltimore! Austin is the new home for Hairspray -- the soultastic, hair hoppin’, dance-til-you-drop musical! Big girl Tracy Turnblad has big ideas about teasin’ to stratospheric hairdo heights while dancing on the Corny Collins TV record hop countdown, and instigating a change that’s gonna come. When this equality cutie starts back-combing and bee-bopping across the racial divide, the bigots can’t stop the beat. John Waters’ campy film inspiration and ZACH Artistic Director Dave Steakley are a match made in ozone-depleting, the higher-the-hair-the-closer-to-God, Beehive heaven!

A
Immerse yourself in the vibrant world of New York City bohemia when ZACH transports you to the lively East Village where performance artists, musicians, and hipsters of all persuasions band together to revolt against convention. The artist squatters have taken over the theatre and have created an environment in which you are fully surrounded by Austin’s finest rock vocalists and musicians and visual artists’ creative expressions of sculptural whimsy. And when Mimi locks eyes with Roger, and Angel spies Colin, and Maureen tugs at Joanne this rock opera ignites sparks of love that redefine what family can be. Viva la vie boheme!

The Flaming Idiots, Zach Theatre, January 28 - March 7

They juggled and joked together for 20 years, and now they're back, while they can still do it. In his program note, Rob Williams -- the beaming little guy in the yellow shirt -- says that the Zach gave them the step up from renaissance fairs and comedy clubs to the world of regional theatres, network television and off-Broadway. They disbanded in 2004 but last year resurrected the act, playing in Edmonton, Canada, to the New Victory theatre in New York City, and now back home to Austin.

Well, maybe "home" in a sentimental sense. Williams lives in Los Angeles and tours internationally; Jon O'Connor, the big guy, coaches a Minneapolis based juggling group, the Jugheads; and Kevin Hunt, he of the now-gray frizzy hair, lives in Louisiana on the north side of Lake Ponchartrain.

It's a highly polished show. Bright, fast and funny with the patter and the surprises. They love this stuff. They must, because they've been doing it for so long. . . .you can catch them on YouTube in a 1991 video from television, doing the same clever variations.
