Directors: Engela Edwards* and Chester Eitze

Notes from director Chester Eitze on his Auditions:
  • September's Always...Patsy Cline is already cast.
  • November's Bingo (musical) performs Fridays and Saturdays, November 1, 2, 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday Matinee, Nov. 17 at 2:30 p.m.
  • December's holiday show or shows will be scheduled after auditions, but most likely performance dates are Fridays and Saturdays December 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21 and Sunday Dec. 15, 2013.

*Note from director Engela Edwards on her Auditions: I'm thrilled to be directing at the Opera House again. I arrived in Texas at the end of May and have already directed one show at the Opera House. I can't wait to see familiar faces, and hope to meet new performers during this audition.

About auditioning for the shows I'm directing:

  • My call backs will be July 9.
  • I will then cast my season shows, and you will be contacted on July 10.
  • We will have a read through with the cast as soon as possible where you will get your rehearsal schedule.
  • My 2013 shows will have traditional 4 to 5 day-a-week rehearsals, lasting for 4 to 5 weeks, immediately prior to the show dates, followed by 3 weekends of performances.
  • Performances happen on Fridays, Saturdays, and some Sundays.
  • August 2013 show: Rehearsals starts July 10 or 11, and performances are Fridays and Saturdays, August 9, 16, 17, 23, 24 and Sunday Matinee August 11, 18, 2013. Currently I have four scripts I want to direct for August. The talent I see at auditions will determine which show is the August show and which will have to wait until the 2014.
  • October 2013 Oz! Regular rehearsals for the Adult performers start September 9. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays Oct. 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26, and Sunday Matinees Oct. 13 & 20.
  • Adults will rehearse in the evenings. Plan on pickup rehearsals on Thursday's of show week. I need everyone there dress rehearsal week.
  • There is a chance that there could be an opportunity for an additional show which rehearses during the day, depending on the rehearsal availability schedule of the talent I see at auditions. So bring your calendars, because ALL rehearsal and performance conflicts will need to be noted at the auditions.

I usually have a cast in mind when I choose a show, or I know that I have the talent available to cast the show I've chosen. Since I have been traveling since the 2011 Bastrop Wildfires, I'm not sure what talent is available, therefore I have chosen:

a play with an all female cast
a play with an all male cast
a silly musical with a huge cast of men and women
a comedy with a small cast of men and woman
a comedy with a small cast of mostly younger roles
a comedy with a medium sized cast of all older roles
shows that require very experienced actors
shows that could work with less experienced actors

If you plan to audition for one of my shows, please send me an email and tell me a little about yourself. Send email to Engela@EASYtheatre.com and make sure you write "auditions" in the subject line.

When entrusting the subject of motherhood to such a dazzling collection of celebrated American writers, what results is a joyous, moving, hilarious, and altogether thrilling theatrical event. Utterly unpredictable, MOTHERHOOD OUT LOUD shatters traditional notions about parenthood, unveils its inherent comedy and celebrates the deeply personal truths that span and unite generations.

"MOTHERHOOD OUT LOUD…never fails to strike both the funny bone and the heart. Anyone who is or has a mother, a stepmother, a foster mother, or anything in between will be able to relate to and enjoy this insightful piece…the collection is impeccably cohesive…What makes the piece work so well is that its portrait of motherhood shows all facets of a family. From adoption to surrogacy to gay parenting to stepmothers, no stone is left unturned…Put aside any preconceived notions about the topic...the play will grab you, as a mother in any form has a long-lasting effect whether you like it or not." —BackStage.

"Packed with wisdom, laughter, and plenty of wry surprises." —TheaterMania.

"Funny, unexpectedly poignant and sweetly entertaining. Brings tears of joy…An evening filled with wit, humor, pathos and enlightenment. Heartfelt and true to life." —Examiner.com.

Auditions in Bastrop for Middle-School Children for New Musical, Bastrop Opera House, December 29

Bastrop Opera House TX

Middle-school-age children in auditions Bastrop Opera House TXBastrop County are encouraged to attend an open audition for a world-premier musical to be staged by the Bastrop Opera House in the BISD Jerry Faye Wilhelm Performing Arts Center the last weekend in April 2013.

Opera House executive director Chester Eitze will direct this winning script, from the Texas Nonprofit Theatres, Inc. original play competition. Written and composed by Barbara and Bob Silberg of Los Angeles, Eitze chose to produce their first full-length play because of its relevance to today’s educational concerns.

“So many elements of this first stage work apply to testing, extracurricular activities, and student governance, which we hear discussed almost daily in the media,” said Eitze. “It is my hope that with its music, its humor, and its emphasis on youthful leadership and problem-solving, the musical will challenge young performers, delight its audiences and become a popular show for junior companies.”

Auditions will be Saturday, Dec. 29 from 10 a.m. to noon at the Bastrop Opera House, 711 Spring St., Bastrop . Actors need to be able to sing. Bring a prepared song and you will be asked to sing a selection that you will be given. Only middle school-age children are called. (*Ages 10-14 considered.) Parents or guardians may stay and get orientation material for this project.

Cake Contest Bastrop Opera House
Bakers are called to make your best tasting red-velvet recipe, and enter your luscious creation in the Bastrop Opera House contest being held in conjunction with our upcoming production of The Red Velvet Cake War as part of our Raise the Roof campaign.
Historically there are many different secrets to the success of this popular dessert. With recipes from World War II, the Waldorf-Astoria and even, Great Britain, the chocolate confection has utilized beets or just red food coloring to achieve the hues of red cake. Texas is credited in the cake's success due to the Adams Extract manufacture of the red liquid coloring.
Anyone is eligible to enter their cake, layered or sheet, cupcake or cake pops. Icings and decorations are unrestricted.
All entries must be homemade by the baker. No commercial entries allowed.* Entries must be in an appropriate container, covered and labeled.
Only bring your entries to the Opera House on Saturday, July 28 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Items will be officially labeled and receipted by Opera House volunteers. All entries become the property of the Opera House. No monetary compensation is permitted. The auction of your delicious red-velvet desserts will help us raise needed money to repair the roof.
Three independent judges from outside Bastrop County will choose the best tasting of the entries. There are no other awards, just the reward of knowing you're helping to keep the rain out of our beloved Opera House so that future generations may enjoy it.
The winner of the red velvet cake competition will be announced on Sunday, July 29 following the matinee performance of the play. Cakes will be auctioned following the recognition of the winner.
Funds from the auction of your dessert will go into the Opera House Roof Restoration Fund.

Fundraiser to Open Capital Campaign to Replace the Roof at the Bastrop Opera House

Bastrop Opera House TX

Great Talent - Great Cause

This Saturday, April 28, 2012 the historic Bastrop Opera House launches an emergency capital campaign to repair the roof.  When you visit the Bastrop Opera House, you are visiting a piece of downtown Bastrop history and Texas history.  Bastrop merchants P. Otto Elzner and S.D. Green agreed to build the Opera House in 1889 at a reported cost of $15,000.  Now 113 years later, more than three times that amount is needed just to repair the roof to preserve this unique piece of history.

Bastrop Opera House Country Music Fundraiser
The first "raise the roof" fundraising event is a live Classic Country Music Show that is sure to draw and entertain lovers of country music and lovers of the Opera House.   There is only one performance, so purchase your tickets now and help us save this grand lady and ensure this wonderful performance space endures for many more generations of performers and patrons.

The Bastrop Opera House at 711 Spring Street (click for map) is the heart of live theater in Bastrop county and needs to be preserved.

The funding of a new roof is crucial.  After the incredible heat of last summer, the rain of this new year have pointed out more leaks in the over-twenty-year-old tin roof.  With contraction and expansion the nails have popped out and where there had been tar and sealant along the down spout alleys, cracks have occurred.  Rather than merely patching repeatedly what is there, a complete overhaul needs to be initiated.  Therefore, several fundraising activities have been discussed including using special music programs like the Classic Country Music Show, where the proceeds will be placed in our building fund for a preservation project of this nature.

You can help by purchasing tickets to the Classic Country Music Show for yourself and others.

Or you may also send a donations for the "roof restoration project" to the Bastrop Opera House, P.O. Box 691, Bastrop, Texas 78602.  You may also make an online donation of any amount on the Bastrop Opera House site at http://bastropoperahouse.com/sponsorship.htm.
