The Further Adventures of Hedda Gabler, Mary Moody Northen Theatre, St. Edward's University, September 29 - October 9

The Further Adventures of Hedda Gabler by Jeff Whitty has an abundance of clever and not much of depth or heart. Director David M. Long does a bang-up job of making it a whizzing entertainment, having recruited three gifted Equity professionals to work with the six St. Ed's Equity-candidate actors relegated to secondary roles.

Playwright Whitty starts with an intriguing hypothetical: what happens to Ibsen's Hedda Gabler after she so famously commits suicide in the last scene of the 1890 play of the same name? We watch Hedda awake in an afterlife, confused, looking around to decipher the only partly familiar world around her. She rises from the 19th century sofa and discovers that her pillow is drenched with blood but she is apparently unharmed. Then her worst nightmare appears: her husband George Tesman, pained and concerned for her. Won't that man ever go away? Not even beyond the grave?

Whitty gives us a literary limbo, populated with an arbitrary assortment of fictional characters embraced by the popular imagination. Hedda learns that she has been committing suicide over and over again for more that a century. She and others in this limbo survive, deathless and ever the same -- until the moment in which they disappear from living memory.

From Tony-Award winner Jeff Whitty (Avenue Q) comes a crazy theatrical exploration of an imaginary universe where fictional characters must remain so long as we remember them, doomed to repeat their actions. Hedda Gabler keeps shooting herself, and Mammy her housemaid keeps cleaning up the mess. Tired of her selfish ways, Hedda sets off in search of her author for a full makeover, taking a bizarre contingent of characters with her. Featuring Equity guests Jill Blackwood, Jarrett King and David Stokey, this production promises to leave you laughing. No knowledge of Ibsen required.

St. Edward’s University Theatre Program goes on an expedition with playwright Eric Overmyer’s wild theatrical ride, On The Verge (Or The Geography of Yearning). Equipped with optimism, humor and a pound of pluck, three Victorian women set off on an expedition to Terra Incognita, uncharted territory. Armed with their umbrellas, backpacks, and terribly large vocabularies, the trio encounters a Beat-poetry spouting troll, Mr. Coffee, a Yeti, Cool Whip and a 1950s presidential campaign.

Playwright Overmyer is best known as a writer and producer for such acclaimed television series as “Treme,” “The Wire,” “Homicide: Life on the Street,” “New Amsterdam,” “St. Elsewhere,” “Law & Order,” and “Law & Order: Criminal Intent.” His plays include Native Speech, In a Pig’s Valise, In Perpetuity Throughout the Universe, Mi Familia Tropicano, Mi Vida Loca, Dark Rapture and The Heliotrope Bouquet, among others. He is the recipient of the Le Comte de Nouy Award for playwriting, a McKnight Fellowship, and a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship.

Directed by David M. Long, the St. Edward’s production features Michelle Brandt, Avery Ferguson, Lindsley Howard and Jon Wayne Martin. George Marsolek provides the scenic design, with lighting design by Kris Carpenter, costume design by Alyssa Johnson, and sound design by Phillip Owen.

With wit, style and a sophisticated, jazz-inspired score, this Tony-award winning musical bounces between film noir and 1940s Hollywood glamour with dynamic musical flare. In the story, a frazzled novelist struggles to adapt his hard-boiled detective novel to the silver screen. As tensions mount, the parallels between his own life and that of his fictional detective spiral start to overlap. The Mary Moody Northen Theatre production features Equity guest artists Sarah Gay, Jamie Goodwin, and David M. Long. Michael McKelvey directs.
