Defiant by George Brant, Debutantes and Vagabonds, February 25 - March 13

Defiant by George Brant Debutantes and Vagabonds

George Brant's Defiant is bleak and stupid.

There, after chewing on it for a week, I have spit it out. Not happily, because this gives me an unbroken record of writing negative reviews about this theatre ensemble. Of the four of their productions I've tracked to date, I missed A Brilliant Revolution and The Virgin with 10,000 Arrows, both of which got respectful reviews. After seeing their May 2009 evening of short works under the title Are You Alive? which featured entr'acte music by The White Ghost Shivers, I wrote, This evening was a predictable success for music and a huge disappointment for theatre.

Brant's piece is non-reflective agitprop. He's either willfully wrong-headed or simply not connected with the society that he's criticizing or satirizing.

Brant's website notes that he received a master's in writing from the Michener Center, so one assumes that the Debs and Vags met him in that connection.

Premise: an unexplained major national catastrophe killed many citizens, and the government has decided to compensate their families and to build a towering memorial. An earnest government accountant has been writing daily to Ann Martin, surviving spouse of one of them. She refuses to have anything to do with the undertaking -- either with the compensation or with the memorial. Twist: unless she checks the box and signs on the dotted line, none of the other beneficiaries gets a cent and the memorial will not be built.

Are You Alive?, Debutantes and Vagabonds at the Rollins Theatre, May 14 - 16

This evening was a
predictable success for music and a huge disappointment for theatre.

Debutantes and Vagabonds, active since 2007 according to the history posted on MySpace, got a nice shout-out in March on Austin.com for their piece "A Brilliant Revolution." Ryan E. Johnson called it "hands down the funniest piece I've seen at FronteraFest."

So I was expecting something special for this "collection of macabre theatre."

D&V secured the Rollins Theatre at the Long Center for a three-night run made possible in part by a rental subsidy. The slickly printed 16-page program featured 7 full-color pages and an impressive cluster of ads and sponsors. D&V persuaded some notable Austin musicians to provide the
entr'acte entertainment music for their program of six short plays -- the White Ghost Shivers on Thursday, The Georgian Company on Friday, and Scott H. Biram on Saturday.

Logistics and promotion were curiously out of whack. I scan theatre listings and postings regularly, yet the first I heard of this production was an e-mail from the Shivers just 48 hours ahead of the opening.

A BRILLIANT REVOLUTION

For radio station manager, Cubby Zimmerman, life shouldn't consist of censoring the Head DJ's absurdities and keeping the janitor's violent tendencies to a minimum; but it does. Anything can happen at KOUP Radio, Skarkie, Illinois' smallest radio station. With forces like Linnius, a monument to rant with a furious suspicion of the homeless, and 8-Ball, an upstate parolee fulfilling his community service at the end of a broom, it's no wonder the station is headed into utter destruction. Thank goodness for anger management, Pepto Bismol, and puppets.
K.O.U.P. - Radio That Fights Back! Come see the Debutantes and Vagabonds' up and coming show "A Brilliant Revolution" at the Blue Theatre on Thursday, March 5th through Sunday, March 15th.

Comment by Ryan E. Johnson, Austinist.com, on the excerpt presented at FronteraFest 2009:

"A Brilliant Revolution
"Welcome to the world of KOUP radio, where nervous radio producers, angry technicians, an off-the-wall foley artist, and a snide, pretentious radio personality (oh, and a dead horse), are waiting to take you on unlikely adventures in comedy. Watching Fred Jones, Amanda Garfield, and Francisco Rodriguez’s A Brilliant Revolution is like watching a sitcom, with plenty of pratfalls, one-liners and characters that seems to be pulled right out of a Marx Brothers movie. All of the characters play their roles to near perfection, but stealing the show every time he gets the stage is Joe Sclotter as the foley artist, whose hilarious commercials and sound effects throughout the piece add a side-splitting hit to the gut, elevating an already hilarious piece to new heights. Hands down the funniest piece I’ve seen so far at FronteraFest."
