Jump-Start bids farewell to Blue Star

By Deborah Martin : January 7, 2014

SAN ANTONIO — Billy Muñoz was a little startled last weekend to discover that the stage at Jump-Start Performance Co.'s current home in the Blue Star Arts Complex was gone.

“I felt a little saddened by it,” said Muñoz, who became a Jump-Start company member in 2002. “I don't really pray, I don't really do any of that. But any time that I did a show, I would go and touch the stage and just kind of have this moment — 'Treat me well.' And now it's gone.”

That particular ritual will continue in a different form before he takes part in “Performance Party 29: Wrecking Ball” on Saturday, he said: “I'll touch the platforms or the floor.”

The stage — along with virtually everything else that the company has accumulated in its 20 years in the space — has been moved out. “Performance Party 29: Wrecking Ball,” which starts at 7 p.m. Saturday, will be the company's final performance in the Blue Star Arts Complex.

Jump-Start learned in April that its lease was not being renewed. After a few months of hunting, they found a new home in a cozy spot at 710 Fredericksburg Road, in the heart of the nascent Beacon Hill arts district.

(*) Jump-Start Celebrates Blue Star Departure with the Wrecking Ball, January 11, 2014

Jump-Start Performance Company San Antonio TXCome help us celebrate 20 incredible years in our Blue Star space at 1400 South Alamo! (click for map)

We've moved most of our fixtures to our new location (710 Fredericksburg Road), so we're turning the entire space into a sprawling performance party. As usual, Jump-Start's company members along with many of our cherished and talented friends will share with you theatre, dance, music, circus, video, and assorted presentations not so easy to fit into a category.

Confirmed performers include URBAN-15, Alamotion, Aerial Horizon, Angels of Elegance,Buttercup, Coyote Dreams, Los Nahuatlatos, Lisa Suarez, Erik Bosse, Dino Foxx, Hyperbubble, Jesse Borrego, Paint by Numbers, Zombie Bazaar, S.T.Shimi, San Antonio Dance Fringe, Doyle Avant, Anna de Luna, Paul Bonin-Rodriguez , Jump-Start Flaming Fire-Eaters, Kitty Williams and many more. Check back often because we will be continually updating the lineup!

There will also be a Video Chill room in the back of the building for ambient music, video and projections going on all night, including a performance by the critically acclaimed performance group ARTheism. You may also see roving performances and pop--up installations occur in unusual corners of the space.

Your kind donation (we suggest $10) will gain you access to the whole evening of chaos and good cheer, which includes eats and drinks for as long as they last. The doors open at 7 pm on Saturday, January 11th. We'll be shutting things down around 10 pm, or whenever we can manage to chase everyone out.

We have no idea what the owners of this building have in mind. But come and party with us before the demolition crews shoulder their way in and turn this place into some ghastly bistro or boutique.

See you at the Wrecking Ball!

Jump-Start Performance Co. has found in Beacon Hill its new home.

The theater company learned in April that its lease at the Blue Star Arts Complex in Southtown would not be renewed. After looking at about 10 spaces, it has landed at a one-time artist's studio at 710 Fredericksburg Road, and are renting it from artist Rolando Briseño.

Jump-Start plans to announce its new home at a press conference Friday. The company also will announce changes to its programming approach and in its leadership structure.

“We're really happy to be in the neighborhood, because it's a revitalized neighborhood,” said Felice Garcia, the company's technical director, who will be overseeing much of the move into the new space.

Jump-Start has been based at the Blue Star Arts Complex for nearly 20 years. It plans to have its administrative offices moved out completely by Christmas. Its final performance in the space will be “Performance Party,” its annual New Year's show/party/fundraiser, on Jan. 11.

The company has a one-year commitment to the new space, said Erik Bosse, who handles the company's public relations.

“I'm very excited that Jump-Start is moving there,” Briseño said.

The company's new neighbors include a ceramics studio, Clamp Light Artist Studios and Gallery and the Uptown Studio, which offers dance classes and other arts-oriented activities.

“Though this be madness, yet there is method in’t.”

The play’s the thing as two resident companies with two very different aesthetics take on one quintessential Shakespearean standard this summer. Jump-Start Performance Co., known for its experimental and original works, and Classic Theatre of San Antonio, known for their professional productions of popular classics, collaborate on this exciting show…one of the last things that both companies will be presenting in the Sterling Houston Theater in the Blue Star Arts Complex before the lease is up mid-January.

Method and Madness: Hamlet 2013 is a fast-paced, edited (with a run-time of 90 minutes) and visceral interpretation of the well-known tale of the indecisive Dane that focuses on the twisted family dynamics in a minimalist style with steam-punk detailing. From co-direction (Diane Malone and S.T. Shimi) to design (including a lighting co-design by Rick Malone and Billy Muñoz) to a talented ensemble comprising members of Jump-Start and Classic (including Billy Muñoz and Linda Ford playing the split personalities of Hamlet), this production showcases the best aspects of both companies including physical theater, movement work, creative design and compelling performances.

Directed by Diane Malone and S.T. Shimi
Dramaturgy & Adaptation by Laurie Rae Dietrich
Lighting Design by Rick Malone
and Billy Muñoz
Sound Design by Rick Malone
Costume Design by Kitty Williams

Performed by Christie Beckham, Erik Bosse, Laurie Dietrich, Linda Ford, Dino Foxx, Pamela Dean Kenny, Billy Muñoz, Robert Rehm, Joseph Urick and Kitty Williams.

(*) Another Two Theatre Companies Evicted from Blue Star Arts Complex, report by Deborah Martin, San Antonio Express-News, April 17

Jump-Start getting the Blue Star boot

By Deborah Martin, Staff Writer

Updated 6:14 pm, Wednesday, April 17, 2013

Jump-Start Performance Co., which has been based at the Blue Star Arts Complex for nearly 20 years, is losing its lease there.

The group will be moving in January, said Producing Director Lisa Suarez. Jump-Start's lease ends in September, but company members were able to negotiate a four-month extension.

Jump-Start is the latest arts group to leave the complex as owner James Lifshutz carries out renovations to add more retail.

Lifshutz did not return calls seeking comment Wednesday afternoon.

The news that Jump-Start will have to move came as a surprise, said Dino Foxx, the theater's public relations director. The company had met with Lifshutz last year as renovations moved forward, Foxx said, and had been told they could rest easy.

“At that time, they assured us that we were definitely a tenant they wanted to keep,” Foxx said.

They received a phone call April 10 informing them otherwise.

The move also will leave Classic Theatre, which shares Jump-Start's space, homeless.

Classic is slated to open the farce “Scapin” May 10. That show's run will take place as planned.

Both companies are determining how to move forward.

“Many options are being brought to the table,” Suarez said. “I was continuing to remind everyone, we are not about this facility necessarily. We are about the creativeness that comes from the company.”

The possibility of the two theater troupes finding a new space together has been floated, Foxx said, but it's too early to say how likely that is to happen.

“There are so many question marks,” said Renee Garvens, who handles publicity and oversees the education program for Classic. “At this point, we want to make sure that we contact all of our big donors and let them know we're full steam ahead.”

The Overtime Theater left Blue Star last year, also as a result of the renovation. The company found a new home near the Pearl Brewery.

Leaving Blue Star turned out well for them, said Artistic Director Kyle Gillette.

“The Pearl is the area right now that is promoting exciting new work and where things are happening,” he said. “And Blue Star, unfortunately, has decided to shun its artists. It's a real shame what they're doing.”

Birth Karen Brody Bold San ANtonio TX

Birth will be presented by BOLDSA2013, a grassroots coalition of organizers and performers who are committed to making maternity care in our community sensitive and responsive to women and their families. We are excited to bring this powerful play to you!

Moving between first-person monologues, dialogue, and the voices these women heard on the day they gave birth, Birth confronts "the naked truth about childbirth in America." It tells the true stories of eight women painting a portrait of how low-risk, educated women are giving birth in America today. These stories are told with humor, sadness, joy, and drama and reveal our common humanity that begins at birth. Each performance will be followed by a community talk back with local maternity care providers and consumers.

Please visit our website, boldsanantonio.org for more information on how to become a part of BOLD as a volunteer or sponsor and for ticket information. All proceeds raised at this event will benefit San Antonio Birth Doulas (SABD), a program of Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of San Antonio, Inc. SABD provides free doula services to pregnant teen mothers and free or reduced fee doula services to low-income mothers. Visit sabirthdoulas.com for additional information on the important role that doulas play during childbirth and identify the many benefits that our young at-risk mothers receive who are now giving birth and raising our next generation.
