Video Promo: River of Gruel, Pile of Pigs: The Requisite Gesture(s) of Narrow Approach by Sibyl Kempson and Rude Mechs at the Salvage Vanguard, opening April 3, 2014

From www.newdramatists.org via Salvage Vanguard Theatre:

From the Pig Pile:
The Requisite Gesture(s) of Narrow Approach opens April 3

by Sibyl Kempson

For three {hundred thousand} years now the Pig Pile has squirmed and squealed its way across a vast landscape of deep associations and histories between seemingly unrelated objects. The closer we get to the complicated, complicated porcine truth of what it means to be human, the more our numbers have dwindled, to where we now begin to fear we are on the brink of extinction. Only you can help us to piece these pieces together so that we may know what we have learned, before it’s too late. Note: If you have any wooden items that you wish to be preserved for all eternity, you may please to bring them with you to the occasion.

Trailer with scenes from Fusebox Festival workshop performance at the Off Center, April, 2013

This is a collaboration between Austin-based theater companies Rude Mechs and Salvage Vanguard Theater, and a New Dramatists resident playwright. The group has gathered four times a year for three years in a chaotic work format known as a Pig Pile, with little discernible leadership or centralized structure - neither of narrative nor of process – and has assembled an unwieldy and highly associative collection of seemingly unrelated imagery, geography and aromas, that over time and layers of work has revealed an emerging, intimately connected web of enfolded and implicate mythology.

This project is one of five institutional New Dramatists/Full Stage USA Commissions for new work at an eclectic mix of producing organizations across the country. The Full Stage USA initiative, conceived by New Dramatists and underwritten by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, addresses the field-critical issues of new works “stalling” in development with no resulting full production and the special challenge of securing subsequent productions after a world premiere. Each partnership provides a $25,000 commission to a writer; supports two years of enhanced writer-driven development in New Dramatists’ Playwrights Lab; and culminates in the full production staged by the partner theater.

The Fault

by Katie Bender
directed by Charles Ott

Dec. 3-7 at 8 pm; Dec. 7 at 2 pm
B. Iden Payne Theatre, University of Texas

A small ragged house stands perched on a fault, pressed between the redwoods and Pacific Ocean. The Davies family resides within, holding together and splitting apart.

The Fault includes mature language and adult content.

About the playwright Katie Bender is a playwright, performer and third-year master of fine arts candidate in playwriting at The University of Texas at Austin. Her plays are irreverent, fun and magical, exploring characters and worlds at the edge of what is possible.

She is a founding member of Underbelly – a theatre collaborative that stages immersive journey plays in forgotten spaces, riffing on American classics. Underbelly’s devised piece Slip River premiered at the 2013 Cohen New Works Festival. Created in collaboration with playwrights Gabrielle Reisman and Abe Koogler, Slip River won the Austin Critics’ Table Award for Best Comedy of 2013.

As a performer Bender recently appeared in the regional premiere of Lisa D’Amour’s The Cataract and the world premiere of Tom Horan’s Static.

(*) Rehearsal Video: Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson at Woodlawn Theatre, November 8 - December 1, 2013

Rehearsal video (30 sec.) for the

Woodlawn Theatre black box San Antonio TX

production of
Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson Woodlawn Theatre San Antonio TX
Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson

by Michael Friedman and Alan Timbers
directed by Matthew Byron Cassi

November 8 - December 1, 2013
Tickets at www.woodlawntheatre.org or by calling the box office at 210-267-8388. Show times are Friday and Saturday at 8 pm and Sundays 2:30 pm. Tickets cost $15 - $23 with discounts for students, military and SATCO members

History gets all sexy punk in this alternate universe with parallels to today's political landscape in Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, which opens November 8 in the Woodlawn Theatre’s Black Box. The show runs through December 1.

Directed by Matthew Byron Cassi with musical direction by Jaime Ramirez of Bombasta, Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson tells the story of America's first political maverick (played by San Antonio’s award-winning actor Anthony Cortino) who kicked British butt, shafted the Indians and smacked down the Spaniards all in the name of these United States – who cares if he didn't have permission? An exhilarating and white-knuckled look at one of our nation's founding rock stars, the show recreates and reinvents the life of "Old Hickory," from his humble beginnings on the Tennessee frontier to his days as Commander-in-Chief. It also asks the question: Is wanting to have a beer with someone reason enough to elect him? What if he's really, really hot?

The Woodlawn Theatre is San Antonio’s historic community theatre, located in the heart of the Deco District at 1920 Fredericksburg Road, just south of Hildebrand. Free parking with security patrol is available.
