Georgetown Palace Seeks Donations to Replace Art Deco Carpet

Georgetown Palace Theatre TXThe Historic Palace Theatre in Georgetown is pleased to announce the receipt of a $5,000 grant from The Albert and Ethel Herzstein Charitable Foundation to help with replacement of the carpet in our historic theatre. Palace patrons have pledged $7,500 to date, bringing our total to $12,500. Additional funds of $7,500 are needed to complete the financial plans for the project. Palace Executive Director Marissa Austin says, “The Albert and Ethel Herzstein Charitable Foundation has been very generous to support yet another much needed project at the Palace. Keeping up an historic building is not easy, and we are incredibly grateful to our patrons and to the Herzstein Charitable Foundation.” The Herzstein Charitable Foundation also made a significant contribution of $15,000 to the Palace in 2010 for the restoration of The Tin Barn, our facility designated for the production needs of the Palace (rehearsals, set building, costume storage, offices).

From the foundation’s website, www.herzsteinfoundation.org/, comes this information: “A businessman, entrepreneur, and, ultimately, a philanthropist, Albert Herzstein dedicated his later years to the charitable foundation that bears his name and that of his equally generous wife, Ethel. Through its gifts, The Herzstein Foundation honors the ideals of personal responsibility and resourcefulness in a free society, limited government, self-sufficiency, the right of all individuals to enjoy a life of quality, and the importance of providing opportunities for people to help themselves. Recipients include organizations that promote education, serve to enrich the human spirit, and work to improve quality of life for others. Preference is given to groups and projects that receive little or no support from the government. We seek to make contributions that will produce meaningful, positive change.”

Following 12 years of extensive foot traffic, the time has come to replace the carpeting throughout our building. Gregory Free, the designer and project manager for our major restoration/renovation project of 1998-2001, has joined with us in determining our carpeting needs this second time around. We feel it is important that we use the Art Deco pattern created for the 2001 restoration to preserve that bit of history. Mr. Free’s idea was to add a touch of color to the original carpet pattern, reaching out to the future while respecting the past. Our committee has agreed upon this approach.

Auditions in Georgetown for Peter Pan, the musical, August 24 - 26, 2013

Georgetown Palace
The Georgetown Palace announces auditions for our upcoming production of Peter Pan, directed by Ron Watson, with choreography by Jesse Smart and music direction by Michelle Hache.

The Artistic team is looking for a cast of about 30-35 Adults, Teens, and Children to help bring this timeless, magical classic to life on the Palace Springer Memorial Stage. This show will be an unforgettable experience and a lot of fun.

Peter PanAuditions will be held Saturday, August 24th, starting at 2pm, Sunday-August 25th, starting at 4:30pm, and Monday August 26th at 7pm. Callbacks will be held Tuesday-August 27th, starting at 7pm. Rehearsals will not begin until September 9th.

Performances will begin November 15th, and close December 30th. Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm, and Sunday at 2pm. We will also have many weeknight performances, Saturday matinees, and possibly Sunday evening performances. All auditions, rehearsals, and performances will be held at the Palace Theatre.

This show will have some special effects, and just as we did for the Wizard of Oz, the characters Peter, Michael, John, Wendy, Jane, and Liza will actually fly. We're bringing in Hall and Associates flying effects to do the flying installation and training.

The show will have a large number of performances, and being around the holidays, it's understandable that some who want to be involved will have performance conflicts. It's my preference not to double cast any of the roles unless I have to. But please don't let having performance conflicts prevent you from auditioning. I will more than likely have performing understudies, where the understudy will be guaranteed a small number of performances and of course perform in the event of an emergency.

The Children's Chorus (anyone under the age of 12) may play Pirates, Indians, and animals, along with some of the lost boys and featured roles. In order to audition, each child must be at least 7 years of age before August 24th, and not older than 12.

The Adults (ages 13 and up) will play the Pirates, Indians, Animals, along with the featured and named roles.

Our rehearsals will generally be held Monday through Thursday, from 7-10pm, and Saturdays from 1-5pm. However, it's possible that we will schedule rehearsals on some Sundays and Fridays as well. So we are asking for everyone's availability for the possible alternative times up front.

Click for additional information about the audition, links to on-line forms, and a link to the character breakdown.

Somewhat lost, but always acutely aware of what is missing, they must find a common ground in order to overcome their grief. A graceful drama of what comes after tragedy; this lyrical and surprisingly humorous story gives way to a sad, sweet release about the nuances of the human heart and the capacity to overcome loss.

Bringing what the New York Times described as ““honesty, accuracy and humor in the details…polished to a high, reflective sheen, the dialogue is blessed with Mr. Lindsay-Abaire's customary grace and wit, but never sounds less than organic.””

““Grade A! A transcendent and deeply affecting new play, which shifts perfectly from hilarity to grief.”” –Entertainment Weekly

The Palace Theatre presents Forever Plaid! FOREVER PLAID is one of the most popular and successful musicals in recent memory. This deliciously goofy revue centers on four young, eager male singers killed in a car crash in the 1950's on the way to their first big concert, and now miraculously revived for the posthumous chance to fulfill their dreams and perform the show that never was. Singing in the closest of harmony, squabbling boyishly over the smallest intonations and executing their charmingly outlandish choreography with over-zealous precision, the "Plaids" are a guaranteed smash, with a program of beloved songs and delightful patter that keeps audiences rolling in the aisles when they're not humming along to some of the great nostalgic pop hits of the 1950's.

Hurricane Season is a gripping story of grief, compassion, and finding a way to move on.  Set in the Rio Grande Valley in 1970, the play explores Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, before its official diagnosis, and its effects on a multi-cultural family infected by war and their struggle to love through their grief. But at what cost?

Texas Our Texas

What do Robert Redford, Vanessa Redgrave, Sam Shepard and just about everyone in Seguin have in common? They've all been to the Texas Theatre, a historic 1930s former movie house along the main thoroughfare of this small town northeast of San Antonio on Interstate 10.

Currently owned by the Seguin Conservation Sciety and for more than 60 years owned and run by a family of motion-picture exhibitors with theaters throughout South Texas, the Texas Theatre recently received a facelift and reopened as a live-performance, multi-media venue and meeting/even space.

Together with its downtown neighbor the independently owned Palace Theatre, the Texas Theatre is helping put Seguin on the map as a center for live performances, dinner theater, music concerts, meetings and more, drawing theater and history buffs from all over the state.
