The Salado Silver Spur Theater (108 Royal St. in historic Downtown Salado) reverts to a convent “gymnatorium” on Fridays and Saturdays through Sept. 22, with the exception of Sept. 7. This second installment in the enormously popular “Nunsense” series unfolds with a wickedly warped sense of frivolity. (There are no Saturday matinees for this production.)
Aptly subtitled “The Second Coming," the Little Sisters of Hoboken are back at Mt. Saint Helen’s School “theatrically” thanking patrons for supporting the benefit show six weeks earlier that helped bury most of the small order which had died from food poisoning.
“Outrageous, hysterical, anything-goes, wacky fun prevails,” assures Director Tony Blackman. “Playwright Dan Grogan’s original book, music and lyrics have already expanded into eight different shows with most on the must-see list of every lover of live theater.”
Admissions are $20 for adults; $18 for senior citizens, military personnel and students with ID; $10 for children aged 12 and under. Group rates are available. Live Music . . . Cast Change
This week, Mary Bentley of Salado steps into the role of Sister Robert Anne, a streetwise nun from Brooklyn, previously portrayed by Kristi Kelley. Bentley, who teaches English at Salado High School, has acted in and directed more than 20 shows, most recently directing “...Charlie Brown” and “Nunsense” at the Spur.
Una Forgy of Belton portrays Mary Regina, Mother Superior, a former circus performer who cannot resist the spotlight. Her competitive but dignified rival, second-in-command Sister Mary Hubert, Mistress of Novices, is played by KD Sperling-Cartlidge of Round Rock. She earned her B.S. degree in English and drama from the University of Mary Hardin Baylor, her M.A. in Literature from Texas State University San Marcos, and her doctorate in Education and Curriculum, and was last seen in the Spur’s extended run of “The Seven Year Itch” in three roles.
Kathryn Tait of Round Rock is Mary Leo, a novice who is determined to be the world's first ballerina nun. Although involved in shows from comedies to burlesque to Shakespeare on stages of all sizes, she now gets to lace up her roller skates for a musical number on wheels.
Silver Spur newcomer Sara Sanderford of Belton portrays wacky, childlike Sister Mary Amnesia, who has had memory issues ever since a crucifix fell on her head. Sanderford, who has delighted audiences all over Central Texas, has added the “art?” of ventriloquism to her musical-comedy talents in a scene involving the puppet character, Sister Mary Annette.
Silver Spur patrons will encounter a set dressed with props from “The Mikado,” since the Hoboken Music Society is presenting the Gilbert and Sullivan musical the following week. To avoid confusion for patrons who missed the first benefit show, Sister Hubert has written a “high-speed” synopsis for the Sisters to act out, immediately bringing everyone up-to-date.
Jonathan Robinson of Belton, a promising young actor and alumnus of the Silver Spur Arts Academy’s youth theater program, is stage managing. Melodee Lenz, who wowed audiences in the Spur’s recent run of “The Seven Year Itch,” (the role made famous by Marilyn Monroe in the film version), has created the “habit-forming” choreography.
The original “Nunsense” began as a line of greeting cards, graduating into a cabaret that ran for 38 weeks. It eventually matured into a full-length musical in 1985 that ran for 3,672 performances, the second-longest-running off-Broadway show in history.
“The entertainment the Sisters present will bring out the hankies,” noted Blackman, the Silver Spur’s longtime Technical Director. “But this tear-jerker is the result of laughing until you cry!”
