Austin Statesman's Gary Dinges Reports Closure of the Silver Spur Theatre, Salado

It's ironic that ArtsJournal.com picked up this short article about the closing of the Silver Spur Theatre, Salado from the Austin Statesman's business page and circulated it nation-wide.

A search of the Statesman establishes that other than occasional mention in arts events listings, the paper has published only three articles about the Silver Spur: this one about the closing, an elegiac March 2 photo essay by Andy Sharp, and a November, 2012 piece about a Christmas radio play.

Austin Live Theatre published 36 'upcoming' pages for the theatre over the past four years, drawn from the extensive releases crafted by Preston Kirk.

By the way, the Silver Spur wasn't a 'community' theatre. It did indeed serve a community, but it wasn't an amateur outfit. The Spur was the enterprise of a handful of hard working artist-entrepreneurs who didn't manage to find a way to attract enough customers to keep the lights on.

  Salado community theater shutting down

By Gary Dinges, American-Statesman Staff
Business section, March 18, 2013

A community theater in Salado has fallen on tough times and will close its doors for good at the end of this month.

While Silver Spur Theater’s attendance and revenue have grown since it opened in 2004, co-owner Grainger Esch said rising expenses have made it financially unfeasible for the venue to remain open.

The theater, home to a variety of Vaudeville-style shows, film screenings and live music, garnered national attention in 2008 when it hosted a wedding rehearsal after-party for Jenna Bush, daughter of former President George W. Bush.

“It’s just not sustainable,” Esch said. “The locals in Salado always thought this was a good thing to have, but there aren’t enough people to support it.”

Salado, which is about an hour north of Austin in Bell County, had 2,161 residents as of July 2011, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Out-of-towners helped boost business during peak tourism periods – spring, summer and the holiday season – but at other times of the year there were more than a few empty seats, Esch said.

“We needed tourism traffic to help this work, and there hasn’t been as much as we’d hoped,” he said.

In a bit of irony, the Silver Spur’s final production, “Schtick Happens,” sold out this month, according to Esch, and encore presentations were added.

“It was great, a joy,” he said. “Everyone had a blast.”

A few private events are scheduled to take place at the Silver Spur through the remainder of March, then Esch will begin selling off props and other items to theater groups elsewhere. Anything not sold will likely be auctioned, he said.

While the theater’s closure might be unfortunate, a Salado hotelier said he doesn’t expect it to significantly impact other businesses in the area.

“Tourists would come here to do other stuff, then wind up there – not the other way around,” said Rob Petro, owner of the Inn at Salado. “It was more of a distraction than a destination for most of them.”

While the Silver Spur is gone for now, Esch said he expects theater will one day return to Salado.

“It’s been a good run,” he said. “I’m proud of what we did, and I’ve got a good outlook about what’s ahead.”

Silver Spur Theatre, Salado, Closes Doors with Final Variety Show on March 1, 2013

Salado Silver Spur Theater Closes Permanently on March 1

Professional theater shuttering after eight years of shows, concerts, events, weddings

For more than eight years, the Silver Spur Theater and its diverse band of entertainers – The Spuradical Players – delighted in reviving a bygone era of family entertainment, offering its trademark blend of vaudeville acts, live music, stage plays and classic cinema.

Business conferences, reunions, concerts, fundraisers and field trips also filled the first class venue, lovingly renovated in the historic Guest & Sanford Grain & Feed Co. at 108 Royal St.

In the Village of Salado, a major IH-35 tourist destination long known for its Stagecoach stop and inviting Hill Country creek, park museums, art galleries, B&Bs and festivals, the Silver Spur Theater was a bastion of night-time entertainment.

Even President George W. Bush and First Lady Laura had “tripped the light fantastic” within its walls for the wedding rehearsal after-party for daughter Jenna Bush and fiancĂ©e Henry Hager.

Now it’s time for the last dance. The theater’s final performance will be a one-night-only variety show, “Schtick Happens,” at 7 p.m., Friday, March 1. Admission is $18 for adults; $15 for senior citizens, military personnel and students with ID; and $10 for children aged 12 and under.

For directions or more show info, visit www.saladosilverspur.com. Reservations recommended for the 150-seat venue. Also, the theater will offer expanded food choices in its lobby.

Upcoming: Christmas Is On The Air, Silver Spur Theatre, Salado, December 1 - 22

Christmas Is On The Air 2012 Silver Spur Salado

Christmas Is ON the Air 2012
at Silver Spur Theater, Dec. 1 - 22

An Oasis of Laughter Amid Holiday Chaos
Seasoned Spuradicals make merry in WSPR-Radio’s annual holiday broadcast

Weekends this holiday season find the hilarious crew of fictional WSPR Radio back “on the air” – and on the Salado Silver Spur Theater stage – readying for its annual live Christmas Eve broadcast. Naturally, nothing goes as planned, and hilarity ensues.

‘Christmas Is On the Air 2012’ is chock-full of the side-splitting slapstick and comedy routines that have made the evolving, annual holiday show a must-see for the entire family and their visitors," said Grainger Esch, Co-founder and Artistic Director of the Silver Spur Theater.

"This holiday show guarantees relief from shopping overload, decorating duties and party planning," Esch emphasized. “Think of the Spur as a safe, family oasis of laughter far from the chaos of Christmas which is on comedic display on our stage.”

The Spur, located at 108 Royal St., is in the renovated Guest and Sanford Granary & Feed Co., a recently designated historic site in Salado, a CenTex holiday shopping destination. The playhouse, with feed signs clearly visible, is a few blocks from the bustling IH-35 Corridor.
Theater patrons will be right in "the studio audience" for the music, merriment and memorable, mirthful staging of an "on-the-air" radio variety show, Esch explained.

The holiday scenario has been conceived, written and performed by The Spuradicals, the theatre’s cast of seasoned actors who continue the Silver Spur's tradition of homespun, heartfelt, original family entertainment.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, with 2 p.m. Saturday matinees: Dec. 1 (eve. only), Dec 7-8, 14-15, 21-22. Admissions are $18 for adults; $15 for senior citizens, military personnel and students with ID; and $10 for children aged 12 and under for evening shows.

Matinees, tickets are $10. Group rates are available. For reservations, call the box office at 254-947-3456. Reservations are strongly recommended for the 150-seat venue. For directions or more info, visit www.saladosilverspur.com.

The eight-year-old professional theater will serve hot cider and expanded food choices at evening shows (only) at The Spuradical Social Club in the lobby. http://www.spuradicalsocialclub.net/

Original, Romantic Comedy Benefits Local Theatres

Two local playwright-actors and director produce and perform show

“Talk to Your Dog,” an original, two-act comedy written by and starring both Marjie Rynearson and Gary Gosney, continues its “World Premiere Benefit Tour” at the Salado Silver Spur Theater, (108 Royal Street, just off IH-35), with 7:30 pm performances on Nov. 10th, 16th and 17th.

This traveling show, enthusiastically enjoyed by full houses at its initial performances at the Temple Civic Theatre and the Cultural Activity Center in September, benefits local live theatres. It features a light and lively plot with clever laugh lines.

The play involves two sweethearts, Lillian and Nathan of a “certain age” – portrayed by local playwrights Marjie Rynearson and Gary Gosney – who were in love during high school. The pair, in unhappy and colorless marriages, meets again many years later at their high school reunion.
Their relationship re-ignites, but there are complications – her husband, his wife, their children, and of course, the dogs.

Admission is $20 for all ages. For reservations, call the box office at 254-947-3456. For directions or more play info, visit www.saladosilverspurtheater.com. Expanded food choices are available in the lobby.

“N-II: The Second Coming” is must-see inspired madness! Only five shows remain.
SALADO, TEXAS (Sept. 4, 2012) – Do the mirth . . . e-r-rr . . . the math! Five singing, dancing, roller-skating nuns. Hundreds of laughs. Only five more shows! Final tally: One merry, memorable evening of holy hilarity, and you don’t have to be Catholic or a math major to enjoy “Nunsense II.”

The Salado Silver Spur Theater (108 Royal St. in historic Downtown Salado) reverts to a convent “gymnatorium” on Fridays and Saturdays through Sept. 22, with the exception of Sept. 7. This second installment in the enormously popular “Nunsense” series unfolds with a wickedly warped sense of frivolity. (There are no Saturday matinees for this production.)

Aptly subtitled “The Second Coming," the Little Sisters of Hoboken are back at Mt. Saint Helen’s School “theatrically” thanking patrons for supporting the benefit show six weeks earlier that helped bury most of the small order which had died from food poisoning.
“Outrageous, hysterical, anything-goes, wacky fun prevails,” assures Director Tony Blackman. “Playwright Dan Grogan’s original book, music and lyrics have already expanded into eight different shows with most on the must-see list of every lover of live theater.”

Admissions are $20 for adults; $18 for senior citizens, military personnel and students with ID; $10 for children aged 12 and under. Group rates are available. For reservations, call the box office at 254-947-3456. For directions or more play info, visit www.saladosilverspur.com. Reservations strongly recommended.

The Silver Spur Theater serves wine, beer, cider and expanded food choices at evening shows (only) at The Spuradical Social Club in its lobby. www.spuradicalssocialclub.net. Membership is achieved by swiping one’s driver’s license.

Live Music . . . Cast Change

The ensemble of five seasoned actresses serves up solo star turns, madcap dance routines and even a game of Bingo with the audience. They are backed by Spur Musical Director Nelda Milligan of Harker Heights on electronic keyboard and Artistic Director Grainger Esch of Salado on drums.

This week, Mary Bentley of Salado steps into the role of Sister Robert Anne, a streetwise nun from Brooklyn, previously portrayed by Kristi Kelley. Bentley, who teaches English at Salado High School, has acted in and directed more than 20 shows, most recently directing “...Charlie Brown” and “Nunsense” at the Spur.

Una Forgy of Belton portrays Mary Regina, Mother Superior, a former circus performer who cannot resist the spotlight. Her competitive but dignified rival, second-in-command Sister Mary Hubert, Mistress of Novices, is played by KD Sperling-Cartlidge of Round Rock. She earned her B.S. degree in English and drama from the University of Mary Hardin Baylor, her M.A. in Literature from Texas State University San Marcos, and her doctorate in Education and Curriculum, and was last seen in the Spur’s extended run of “The Seven Year Itch” in three roles.

Kathryn Tait of Round Rock is Mary Leo, a novice who is determined to be the world's first ballerina nun. Although involved in shows from comedies to burlesque to Shakespeare on stages of all sizes, she now gets to lace up her roller skates for a musical number on wheels.

Silver Spur newcomer Sara Sanderford of Belton portrays wacky, childlike Sister Mary Amnesia, who has had memory issues ever since a crucifix fell on her head. Sanderford, who has delighted audiences all over Central Texas, has added the “art?” of ventriloquism to her musical-comedy talents in a scene involving the puppet character, Sister Mary Annette.

Silver Spur patrons will encounter a set dressed with props from “The Mikado,” since the Hoboken Music Society is presenting the Gilbert and Sullivan musical the following week. To avoid confusion for patrons who missed the first benefit show, Sister Hubert has written a “high-speed” synopsis for the Sisters to act out, immediately bringing everyone up-to-date.

Nunsense II Silver Spur Theatre Salado TX

Jonathan Robinson of Belton, a promising young actor and alumnus of the Silver Spur Arts Academy’s youth theater program, is stage managing. Melodee Lenz, who wowed audiences in the Spur’s recent run of “The Seven Year Itch,” (the role made famous by Marilyn Monroe in the film version), has created the “habit-forming” choreography.
The original “Nunsense” began as a line of greeting cards, graduating into a cabaret that ran for 38 weeks. It eventually matured into a full-length musical in 1985 that ran for 3,672 performances, the second-longest-running off-Broadway show in history.
“The entertainment the Sisters present will bring out the hankies,” noted Blackman, the Silver Spur’s longtime Technical Director. “But this tear-jerker is the result of laughing until you cry!”

ABOUT: The Silver Spur Theater is located in the renovated Guest and Sanford Granary & Feed Co., in Salado, a few blocks from the Interstate 35. The Spur revives a bygone era of family entertainment, offering its trademark blend of live vaudeville acts, music, plays and classic cinema. Weddings, reunions, business conferences, concerts, field trips, dances, even customized private shows are held in the historical venue, with catering available from the Stagecoach Inn and nearby restaurants.

The eighth chapter in the Silver Spur Theater's annual melodrama series – Ballot Box Bedlam! Or The Millionaire Mountebank’s Mayoral Machination by Gary Askins – has the peaceful village of Salado in an election fever dither as their one-candidate mayoral race is hijacked by a power-hungry outsider.
Can hero Ranger Grainger save Miss Goody Goody and the peaceful Salado citizenry from the peril of an unfair election? Will Snidely O. Slipknot’s Super-Duper PAC rig the voting and put Herman Lame, the villain’s stooge, into office? That and other questions will be answered with a healthy dose of slapstick, song and satire.
The popular, family-centric "melo" opens for a four-weekend run at 7:30 p.m., Friday, July 27, complete with popcorn-throwing patrons, on-screen pie-fights and pernicious ploys. Additionally, a locally-made "movieola," an old-style silent film with live music, once again features Salado citizens and businesses in a fun-filled, flickering farce that moves the comedy along.

If there is one sure antidote to a long, hot summer, it’s laughter. And one of the theatre’s biggest all-time comedy hits is “The Seven Year Itch” by George Axelrod, although more fans may remember the Billy Wilder-directed, 1955 movie starring sultry Marilyn Monroe and Tom Ewell.

The titular phrase, which refers to declining interest in a monogamous relationship after seven years of marriage, has been used by psychologists for years. And the film contained one of the most iconic images of the 20th century – Monroe standing on a subway grate as her white dress was blown above her knees by a passing train.

The Silver Spur Theater box office is open and buzzing for its first production, the award-winning “Same Time, Next Year.”

Playwright Bernard Slade’s witty, nostalgic and romantic comedy opens at 7:30 p.m., Friday, April 13, and runs weekends through May 5.

Guest Director KD Sperling of Round Rock has cast Steve Smith of Temple and Kathryn Tait of Round Rock as “George” and “Doris,” whose love affair includes an annual weekend rendezvous at a California inn for 25 years, despite their being loyal to their families the rest of the time.

Changing manners, morals and attitudes, from 1951 through the mid-1970s are mirrored in the dialogue and costumes, and helped make this 1975 play one of the most popular romantic comedies of the century,

Tony Blackman, the Silver Spur’s long-time Technical Director, is handling set design, lighting and the vintage costumes.

“‘Same Time…’ ran for four years on Broadway, was a successful motion picture and remains one of the most widely produced plays in theater history,” said Sperling,” who previously directed “Bell, Book and Candle” at the Silver Spur and appeared in leading roles “Steel Magnolias,” “Counter Girls” and “Nunsense.”

“The show’s six hysterically funny scenes, each five years apart, have special effects to capture the prevailing mood of America in each period,” Sperling noted.

The show will run at 108 Royal St. in historic Downtown Salado at 7:30 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays, April 13 – May 5. (No matinees.) Admissions are $18 with $15 discount tickets for seniors, military and students. Group rates are available.

Ghost story is Playwright-Director Ramon Carver’s ‘swan song’ after 17 years with the Living Room Theatre of Saldo

“The Village,” a new production premiering at the Salado Silver Spur Theatre on Friday, Feb. 3, is a full-length comedy with “a smattering of serious scenes,” according to Dr. Ramon Carver, its 79-year-old author-director and producer.

In truth, however, the play, which “takes place in a fictional village located somewhere between Heaven, Hell and Austin,” may well be Carver’s own “swan song” to Salado and a celebrated theatrical career.

The unconventional ghost story-cum-play, staged by Living Room Theatre of Salado (LRTS), will have three performances at the Salado Silver Spur Theater (108 Royal St.) -- two at 7 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3-4, and a matinee at 2 p.m. that Saturday. The play has adult themes and language. Parental discretion is advised.

The play’s action involves ghosts who haunt a small Texas village coffee shop where they observe live persons witnessing an accidental murder. As one character observes: “Real murders and accidental murders are pretty much the same thing.”

Maverick, a well known magician from Austin, portrays the new agricultural agent Badseed. Can Ranger Grainger save Maezy Moonflower and the Salado citizenry from the peril that ensues? This romantic musical with music by Harvey Schmidt and lyrics by Tom Jones, has deep Texas roots and a UT-Austin connection before becoming the longest running musical in New York at more than 50 years. It's a moving tale of young lovers schemingly pushed together by parents. The couple becomes disillusioned, only to discover a more mature and meaningful relationship. The show is punctuated by a bountiful series of catchy, memorable songs, like "Try To Remember." For directions or more play info, visit www.saladosilverspurtheater.com.

Theatre-goers who’ve seen this show before will enjoy it again, and those patrons who’ve never seen it will discover the magic that has made it a worldwide success,” Esch said. “At the heart of ‘The Fantasticks’ are breathtaking poetry and subtle theatrical sophistication, a purity and simplicity that transcends cultural barriers.”

The songs of the legendary Hank Williams will fill the Silver Spur Theater at 8 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 19, and at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb 20 as Sonnen Productions brings its adaptation of “Hank Williams: Lost Highway” to Salado. Tucker Peterson’s voice, picking, with local artists and actors, tell troubled story

“The musical features a cast of talented musicians and actors, but largely rests on the shoulders of country artist Tucker Peterson’s distinctive voice and old-style guitar-picking. He weaves a wandering path through the troubled life of Hank Williams and songs that have captivated a century of artists since,” said Grainger Esch, Co-founder and Executive Director of the Silver Spur Theater. “Casting soulful shadows on this path – like the influence Rufus ‘Tee-Tot’ Payne had on Hank’s music – is the versatile, songbird voice of Paul Puckett, who portrays the mentor-friend.” Esch said.

The play, written by Randal Myler and Mark Harelik, enjoyed a successful Off-Broadway run in 2003, garnering rave reviews.
New York Post critic Donald Lyons declared it “the best example of a musician's bio put on stage” that he had ever seen.

“Lost Highway” treats mature audiences to an evening of the music they grew up loving and gives all ages a chance to witness the highs and lows of one of country music’s most storied singer/songwriters.

Admissions are $15 with $12 discount tickets for seniors, military and students. Sunday matinee tickets are $10 and $8. Children’s tickets are $8 both shows. Group rates are available for either event. For reservations, call the box office at 254-947-3456. For directions or more play info, visit www.saladosilverspurtheater.com.
