A séance. A card game. A troubled marriage. An electronic rival. Add the musical talents of Gian Carlo Menotti, Leonard Bernstein and Samuel Barber to create four of the most popular American operas of the late 1940s and 1950s - all to be performed by St. Edward's University's Spotlight on Opera Workshop on April 16th and 17th at the Ragsdale Center.

The St. Edward’s University Music Department and Spotlight on Opera proudly present another dynamic vocal showcase for their inaugural fall/spring season. This double-bill includes:

Suor Angelica, a one-act opera by Giacomo Puccini, set in a Siennese convent. Central characters to this lavish and tragic tale of loss, repentance and redemption are Suor Angelica, played by soprano Leah Knight, and the Zia Principessa (Suor Angelica’s aunt) played by mezzo-soprano Lisa Alexander, with stage direction by Cindy Sadler and music direction by Chuck Dillard.

Let's Hear It For the Boys, staged by Rebecca Herman, opens the show with a mélange of glorious music and excerpted scenes from some of the most poignant moments of popular operas such as La Bohème, The Student Prince, The Pearlfishers and The Ballad of Baby Doe.

A double bill of staged scenes from Carmen, Hansel and Gretel, The Mikado, Die Fledermaus, Barber of Seville, The Magic Flute, and The Marriage of Figaro; followed by Puccini’s rip-roaring one-act comedy, set in 1980’s Austin and sung in English.

Spotlight on Opera is in its third season. Sponsored by the St. Edward’s University Music Department, it has the mission of offering career-track and avocational singers the chance to experience the spotlight in programs of opera excerpts, concerts, and full productions. Singers learn on their feet through intensive rehearsals and performances, master classes, and private lessons with our faculty.
