Starting July 9th, Trinity Street Players will present Larry Shue’s offbeat and witty comedy The Nerd. The show runs through July 24th at the Black Box Theatre located at 901 Trinity Street in downtown Austin.

Best known for his popular comedy The Foreigner, American playwright Shue opened his first full-length play The Nerd in 1981 in the Milwaukee Repertory Theatre. Finding great success, the play was produced in London and then transferred to Broadway by 1987. Unfortunately, his sensational career was stopped short in 1985 when Shue was killed in a commuter plane crash.

This extraordinarily hilarious comedy centers on the quandary of a young, aspiring architect, Willum, who is stuck in a job in western Indiana that he does not like. He reaches an impasse when his beautiful girlfriend decides to move to Washington, D.C. to be a weather girl.

All of a sudden, a war hero blasts into his life and overstays his welcome. The socially inept, obnoxious visitor becomes unbelievably annoying, but is tolerated because he had saved Willum’s life in Vietnam. The second act revolves around the character's increasingly humorous plans to convince his unexpected visitor to leave without hurting his feelings.

The Nerd is Lisa Dollar's directorial debut with Trinity Street Players, though she has directed several plays elsewhere. Lisa said the brilliant actors and amusing comedy will leave you laughing out loud. “It's side-splittingly funny,” she said. "You won't want to miss it."

The Nerd
by Larry Shue
directed By Michael Johnson

November 6 - 21, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m.
10960 E. Crystal Falls Pkwy, Leander

Now an aspiring young architect in Terre Haute, Indiana, Willum Cubbert has often told his friends about the debt he owes to Rick Steadman, a fellow ex-GI whom he has never met but who saved his life after he was seriously wounded in Vietnam. He has written to Rick to say that, as long as he is alive, "you will have somebody on Earth who will do anything for you"—so Willum is delighted when Rick shows up unexpectedly at his apartment on the night of his thirty-fourth birthday party.

But his delight soon fades as it becomes apparent that Rick is a hopeless "nerd"—a bumbling oaf with no social sense, little intelligence and less tact. And Rick stays on and on, his continued presence among Willum and his friends leading to one uproarious incident after another, until the normally placid Willum finds himself contemplating violence—a dire development which, happily, is staved off by the surprising "twist" ending of the play.
