YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU by Hart & Kaufman, Texas School for the Blind, May 15 - 18, 2013

Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired
You can't take it with you Texas school for the blind Austin TX
presents
YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU

by Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman
One of the most popular and successful plays of modern times. At first the Sycamores seem mad, but it is not long before we realize that if they are mad, the rest of the world is madder. In contrast to these delightful people are the unhappy Kirbys.

The plot shows how Tony, the young son of the Kirbys, falls in love with Alice Sycamore and brings his parents to dine at the Sycamore home on the wrong evening. The shock sustained by the Kirbys shows Alice that perhaps marriage with Tony is out of the question. The Sycamores, however, though sympathetic to Alice, find it hard to realize her point of view. Meantime, Tony, who knows the Sycamores are right and his own people wrong, will not give her up, and in the end Mr. Kirby is converted to the happy madness of the Sycamores, particularly since he happens in during a visit by an ex-Grand Duchess, earning her living as a waitress.

Different Stages continues its 2011-2012 season with Kaufman and Hart's You Can't Take It with You, directed by Mick D'Arcy. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, this comedy introduces us to the Sycamores, a family that delights in eccentricity. They may seem mad, but they show us that those who pursue convention for its own sake and who need to conform to society's conventions are the maddest of us all. This play about living life to the fullest, following your own dreams, and daring to be unconventional has been a perennial since its debut in 1936.
The romantic leads are played by Chelsea Bunn (Romeo and Juliet) and Tony Salinas (Inherit the Wind), and the bride-to-be's parents are played by Phoebe Greene (Night of the Iguana) and Scott Friedman (She Stoops to Conquer). Her sister and brother-in-law are played by Katie O'Brien (You Better Watch Out) and Tyler Mabry (Sleeping Beauty). Grandpa is played by Norman Blumensaadt (Eurydice). Rounding out the cast are Craig Kanne (The Best Man), Allegra Jade Fox (Into the Woods), Justin Guillory, Ben McLemore (Doctor Faustus), Andy Brown, Julie B. Jones, Steven Fay, (Murder on the Nile) Terrie Cooper (Blood Wedding), Skip Johnson (Twelfth Labor), and Mary Kennelly (Is Life Worth Living?).
Performances are Thursdays through Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 7pm. There is no performance on Thanksgiving, Thursday, November 22. Added performance on Wednesday, December 5. Tickets are Pick-Your-Price: $15, $20, $25, and $30.

You Can't Take It with You, Trinity Street Players, First Baptist Church, April 15 - 25

Director Rev. Ann Pittman and the Trinity Street Players have put together an accomplished, warm and funny production of Kaufman & Hart's You Can't Take It With You at the 4th floor black box theatre of Austin's First Baptist Church, 901 Trinity Street, downtown.

This affectionate study of a family of distracted amateur would-be artists and entrepreneurs bears the title You Can't . . . but the message is clearly You Can. You can be an artist, a writer, a dancer, a fireworks maker, a master printer -- even if you don't really have much talent for it. One major pleasure of art is the pleasure of creation, without much thought for commercial success or even for an audience, other than for family and friends. That theme fits a lot of Austin's theatre scene, even though the level of talent here is a lot higher than that in the Vanderhof family.

The Trinity Street Players themselves are proof of the theme, as well, for these players, many of them self-confessed neophytes, do a fine job of bringing the Vanderhof clan to life. With Rev. Pittman's assured directing and perceptive casting, they spin the fleece into gold.
