Austin Shakespeare pairs fun activities and the festive atmosphere of a birthday party at Shakespeare’s 448^th Birthday Party at the Curtain Theater and Castleton Village. Proceeds support Austin Shakespeare and Free Shakespeare in the Park.

Guests can learn to fence, go on a scavenger hunt, hear music and play games, all in a lovely lakeside setting. Kids and adults will perform scenes from Shakespeare. Enjoy craft making, delicious food, mask-making, fencing, even a fort and a pirate ship. And, of course, cake!

This will be a wonderful way for families to enjoy a beautiful spring afternoon playing games, fly in a swing, make crafts, learn to fence, listen to music, play bocce ball, and go on a fun-filled scavenger hunt culminating in lots of prizes.

Some of Austin’s talented young actors will perform scenes at the Curtain Theater, a Treasure hunt will begin at 1pm and 2:30 pm, and the Blowing out of the Candles on Shakespeare’s Birthday cake will be at 3:30 pm.

Tickets are $12 for adults; $7 for children under 12, children 2 and under free. Tickets available only at the event. Parking is free.

The Tempest

Who are The Baron's Men? We're a small company who are as passionate about history as we are about theater. We strive to produce Renaissance plays in a period fashion and style that does include some bawdy humor that is correct to Shakespeare’s time. Our costumes are meticulously researched and documented regarding their authenticity. We use only live music that is correct to the period (late 16th and early 17th centuries) and is played on historically accurate instruments. Torches supply the majority of light for our plays, and the small amount of electrical lighting that we use is very discreet and not noticeable by the majority of the audience. We invite you to enjoy a theatrical experience unlike any other in Austin.

The Tempest will not be performed in the Curtain Theater, but on another piece of the same property in the village of Castleton. Feel free to use the seating provided, bring your own, or enjoy the evening as a blanket picnic. The Baron’s Men recommend bringing a coat in the event that we have an unseasonably chilly evening.

What started out as a one time enterprise meant as an homage to an admired friend known for his great performances has turned into a company of actors and technicians, most of whom had never performed before becoming involved but have discovered talents that they never knew they had. With the exception of the board of directors, The Baron's Men is a fluid group, with cast and crew joining or not joining productions based on time and interest. Though the faces change from production to production, one thing remains the same: The Baron's Men continue to have fun as they stretch their creative talents and push the envelope of their performances.
