Macbeth by William Shakespeare, City Theatre, Austin, October 10 - November 3, 2013

ALT review
Macbeth Shakespeare City Theatre Austin TX

by Michael Meigs

Shakespeare's most frequently performed works have remained vivid and vital for centuries in part because he creates characters caught in life's fundamental, archetypical dilemmas. Young lovers Romeo and Juliet rebel against constraints of family and society. Hamlet, the solitary hero, disappointed and deceived, seeks justification for taking action against a sea of troubles. Lear rages against old age and arrogant, indifferent children. And Macbeth is a good man undone by temptation and headed straight to hell.

Macbeth, noble, dutiful and valiant, is lured by ambition into the evil sequence of deceit, regicide, murder, slaughter, oppression and war. In opening scenes he's victorious and devoted, a central figure whom all admire; over the course of these five acts he abandons obedience and scruple, wading ever deeper into mortal sin and bloodletting, alienating our initial sympathies. This is an enormous distance to travel, both for the actor and for the audience.
Macbeth City Theatre Austin
Dawn Erin, Brian Villalobos (photo: City Theatre)

Brian Villalobos establishes City Theatre's Macbeth as fit, athletic and eloquent but haunted by the sensitivities of a modern young 21st century man. In opening scenes we see him less as a tempted hero than as a hesitant victim of the witches' tempting prophecies and the cold hearted insistence of Dawn Erin as Lady Macbeth. Villalobos uses one particular and distinctive gesture again and again in the opening acts: in confusion and indecision he seizes his head with both hands.

Indecisive, but not inarticulate. His delivery is well paced with good scansion and no grandiloquence or bombast. One senses a Macbeth engaged in an ongoing interior dialogue. Some replies Villalobos played more quietly than the house really allowed -- though the City Theatre with its 85 seats is an intimate space, there's a lot of cloth and space behind the players to swallow up sound.

Villalobos moved Macbeth away from that initial confusion toward greater decision and clarity. In contrast to the play's more familiar traditional arc -- showing the usurper as single-minded but ever more out of control -- this Macbeth seemed to comprehend more fully the consequences of his actions. He does grasp at the straws of the witches' mendacious assurances, but he's calmer, stronger and increasingly more determined in the final act. Villalobos is on one knee at center stage when he's given the news of the death of his queen; he pauses, not rising, and delivers the memorable monologue "Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow. . . " quietly and without bitterness.

Ambition. Desire. Witchcraft. Blood. Murder. The City Theatre Company is excited to open its 8th anniversary season with William Shakespeare’s darkest and most powerful tragedy Macbeth, coming to Austin this fall. The story of a Scottish king consumed by an evil, corrosive ambition for power will run October 11 thru November 3 at The City Theatre. It is directed by Kevin Gates and stars Brian Villalobos and Dawn Erin.
“Life ... a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.”
Macbeth is the infamous chronicle of a Scottish hero’s fall from grace, through spellbound seduction and the pursuit of power. Shakespeare’s study of ambition leads us from battlefield triumph to bloody assassination as our title character gains the crown, but forfeits his soul. Spawned by three mysterious witches who offer him an intriguing prophecy and an ambitious wife urging murderous actions, Macbeth begins a maddening descent into war, insanity and death where nothing will ever be the same again. Superstitiously referred to as “the Scottish play,” Shakespeare’s Macbeth has enjoyed considerable success despite its notoriety as a cursed play, and CTC breathes new life into this wickedly brutal and chaotic tale.
The City Theatre is no stranger when it comes to producing Shakespeare’s plays as the company takes classical works geared towards bigger and bolder demands, such as Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet, and provides the challenge and opportunity in a more intimate, subtle approach. “What’s different about this production is that we're trying to present Macbeth in a very personal context,” mentions director Kevin Gates. “The themes of Macbeth are timeless with ambition and desire no less relevant today. Setting the play in a non-specific time and place is intended to put the focus on the text and the actors, rather than draw focus away from them. This makes the audience a part of the story.”
CTC has assembled an exciting cast for the show including two talented veterans of the City Theatre stage Brian Villalobos (The Crucible) and Dawn Erin (Agnes of God, The Miracle Worker.) The cast also includes Brad Hawkins, Clint Harris, Trace Pope, Heath Allyn, Dave Yakubik, Eric Daugherty, Tony Baker, Nick Kier, Brett Tribe, Darren Scharf, Levi Gore, Hallie Strange, Austen Cabler, Maria Latiolais, Nicole Oglesby, Cara Juan, Elly Stevens and Whitney Blake Dean. CTC is also thrilled to have as a first-time director, Kevin Gates, whose other directorial productions include Dr. Faustus with Last Act Theatre and Cymbeline with the EmilyAnn Theatre. He has also played lead roles in CTC’s productions of Romeo and Juliet and Much Ado about Nothing. The costume designer is Jessica Frymire with set design by Andy Berkovsky and fight choreographer Nick Lawson.
The City Theatre Company is an Austin-based not for profit arts organization and is sponsored in part by the Austin Creative Alliance and the Austin Cultural Arts Division. Founded in 2006, the company has been recognized by the Austin Critics Table Awards, the B. Iden Payne Awards and is twice voted “Best Theatre Company” by Austin-American Statesman’s Austin 360. CTC is dedicated in providing quality theatre experience and entertainment for Austin artist’s and its community.

The Tempest, August 19 and Henry IV, Part I, August 20

Shakespeare at Winedale’s 2013 Summer Class will showcase their productions of Shakespeare’s The Tempest and King Henry IV, Part One as part of their summer tour. There will be only one performance in Austin of each play: The Tempest on Monday, August 19 and Henry IV, Part I, onTuesday, August 20 at 7:30pm.

Tickets are $15 for general admission or $10 for student ID holders, UT staff, and faculty and may be ordered online through the Shakespeare at Winedale website or by calling (512) 471-4726.
The Tempest tells the tale of Prospero, the supplanted Duke of Milan, and his young daughter Miranda, both of whom have been stranded together on an island for twelve years. With the magic he has learned, Prospero conjures a tempest that strands his wrong-doers on the same island. The Tempest follows the shipwrecked passengers as they fight to survive amidst the magic and monsters that inhabit the island. Elissa Russell, who plays Miranda in The Tempest, finds that the unique environment of Winedale enhances the beauty of the play. “Performing in the barn is entirely different than performing on a normal stage. You’re surrounded by nature and removed from society, which adds an aspect to the plays that you can’t get everywhere else.” Assistant Director (and former Winedale Prospero) Bob Jones says “The Tempest is one of Shakespeare’s most beautiful plays, both in terms of the richness of its poetic language, and in its themes of grace, reconciliation, and forgiveness.”

King Henry IV, Part One tells the tale of Prince Hal and his journey from street rat to a young King Henry V. As the play begins he associates with the fat, drunk knight Falstaff, and commits theft with the scum of England. As his father’s war with the fiery Hotspur wages on, he becomes what his father had hoped: “A son who is the theme of honour's tongue.” Cody Chua, playing the lovable Falstaff, says Henry IV is a play “that reflects well the wonder of Shakespeare’s versatility and wit. As one of his best history plays, if not the best, it has so much not only of pleasure but of pathos, and passion. We can meditate on the fragility and innocence of an old, fat man, and at the same time we can laugh at his wit, and his blunders.”

Shakespeare at Winedale is a University of Texas program in which students study and perform Shakespeare at the Winedale Historical Complex near Round Top. Since its founding by English professor James Ayres in 1970, the program’s unique, hands-on approach has brought Shakespeare’s words to life for hundreds of students and thousands of audience members. University students from many disciplines and backgrounds work together for six weeks at Winedale, ending their summer with four weekends of performances in a converted nineteenth-century hay barn.

Shakespeare at Winedale TX

July 18 - August 11, 2013
Winedale Barn
3738 FM 2714 Round Top, Texas 78954-4901 (click for map )
Shakespeare at Winedale’s 2013 Summer Class takes the stage this summer with performances of The Comedy of Errors, The Tempest, Henry IV, Part I, and, for the first time at Winedale, Christopher Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus. Performances will begin July 18th and run through August 11th; performances are Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 7:30pm with matinees on Saturdays and Sundays at 2pm. Tickets are $10 for general admission or $5 for students/UT ID holders and may be ordered online through the Shakespeare at Winedale website www.shakespeare-winedale.org.
The complete summer performance schedule can be accessed at this link: http://www.utexas.edu/cola/progs/winedale/_files/pdf/Performances-And-Tickets/Summer_Schedule_2013.pdf

For the first time in the program’s history, this summer’s class will perform Christopher Marlowe’s thrilling tragedy of Doctor Faustus. Based on the classic German myth, the tale of Doctor Faustus chronicles one academic’s deal with the Devil to gain knowledge and power. This is only the third non-Shakespearean play to be performed at Winedale, and the first time Marlowe has been performed in the Winedale Theatre Barn. Join us for a devilish good time.

The magic continues with Shakespeare’s The Tempest, which tracks the survival of shipwrecked sailors as they roam about an island inhabited with a spirit, Ariel, a monster, Caliban, and the vengeful sorcerer, Prospero. This tale of magic, revenge and betrayal will come to life when set against the backdrop of Winedale’s natural beauty.

Henry IV, Part I begins with a disquieted new King of England, Henry IV, who must begin his reign by dealing with the murder of his predecessor, battles with Scotland and Wales, and his son’s debauched behavior. This is the first of Shakespeare’s plays in which we are introduced to the lovably infamous Falstaff – a role so hilarious it allegedly earned commendation from the Queen Elizabeth I. Shakespeare at Winedale prides itself on its histories. You won’t want to miss this classic tale.
The Comedy of Errors sees two sets of twins who were separated at birth thrown back together with a wonderful array of confusion and frustration. Shakespeare’s shortest play, Comedy will delight audiences with a slapstick farce of mistaken identity.
“We have a fantastic array of performances this summer,” says Shakespeare at Winedale Director James Loehlin. “The Comedy of Errors is one of Shakespeare’s funniest plays, and The Tempest is perhaps his most magical one. Henry IV is a history, a comedy, and a tragedy wrapped up in one play, and Falstaff is probably Shakespeare’s greatest comic character. And it is a thrill to be doing Marlowe—Faustus is a haunting play you will never forget.”

When the students complete their work in residence, they will tour to Austin and Dallas, TX, as well as the American Shakespeare Center in Staunton, VA, home to the world’s only historical recreation of Shakespeare’s Blackfriars stage. More information about touring dates and venues will be posted to the website soon.

Thursday, July 25th, is Fayette County Night; tickets for Fayette County residents are only $4 for that evening’s performance of The Tempest, and door prizes will be raffled off at the end of the performance. Our annual Season Finale is Saturday, August 10th, beginning at 6:30pm with a special catered reception before the evening performance of The Comedy of Errors; tickets are $25.

Shakespeare’s classic comedy of the war between the sexes follows the story of two sisters: Katherine, an angry and menacing woman who wants nothing to do with men, and her dutiful younger sister Bianca, a lovely docile girl whose hand in marriage is sought by many men. When their father declares that Bianca many not marry until Katherine is wed, all hope for Bianca’ future seems lost. Then the macho Petruchio breezes into Padua looking for a wealthy wife—a plot is hatched! This show is a “cutting” of the Bard’s original, condensing the madcap comedy.

Will the earnest endeavor to restore a young romance elicit an unexpected change of heart for the effort’s unlikely collaborators as well? Witty wordplay, passionate poetry and clever plot twists make this the perfect romantic evening to share love and laughter.

Two Gentlemen of Verona deals with the somewhat foolish behavior of people in love and the challenges friends face when they fall for the same person. The play features one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedic duos, Launce and Crab the dog. To bring the role of Crab to life, S4N Theater teamed up with Austin Dog Rescue to feature a different, adoptable dog each weekend.

“Something for Nothing Theater discovers its performances through the creative act of play,” said Artistic Director Chelsea Bunn, “and Two Gentlemen of Verona gives us a lot to work with: two clowns, original music, disguised identity, outlaws, a dog. It’s a real comic smorgasbord that is sure to delight the young and young-at-heart.”

Something for Nothing Theater was founded on the belief that Shakespeare’s works, at their best, should be performed with a great deal of heart and a minimum amount of gimmick.
