Auditions for Romeo and Juliet by Shakespeare, Baron's Men, November 6 and 9, 2013

The Baron’s Men company is looking for actors ages 18 and up for its spring 2014 production of Romeo and Juliet. Auditions will be held at The Curtain Theatre on Wednesday, November 6, from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturday, November 9, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with callbacks on Saturday, November 9 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.


Actors are asked to prepare a 1-2 minute monologue from any early modern drama. Sides from the play will be provided at auditions. Please bring a resume and head shot or a recent snap shot. 


The role of Nurse has been precast. All other roles are open. Actors of all ethnic/racial backgrounds are encouraged to audition. Some roles will be considered for cross-gender casting. 


The play will be performed in a near uncut state, in period costumes and with period effects at The Curtain Theatre, an Elizabethan style outdoor theater approximately one third the size of London’s Globe Theatre.


Rehearsals are scheduled to start in mid-January. Performance dates are April 4, 5, April 11, 12, April 17, 18, 19, and April 24, 25, 26. Actor call times will be at 6:30 p.m. All shows will begin at 8 p.m.

Austin Shakespeare presents Young Shakespeare, performing Romeo and Julieta, a semi-bilingual (approximately 10-15% Spanish) version of the classic tale of youthful romance set against a backdrop of warring families. Young Shakespeare performers are 12 - 19 and come from a variety of backgrounds. Performances take place at Richard Garriott de Cayeux' Curtain Theatre, a replica of an Elizabethan theater on the shores of Lake Austin, providing everyone with an authentic Shakespearean experience.

Richard II by William Shakespeare, Poor Shadows of Elysium at the Curtain theatre, February 21 - March 9, 2013

This company, the Poor Shadows of Elysium, is newly established but its principals and associates are well known to the curious collection of Shakespeare enthusiasts in Austin. After appearing in recent years as Oberon, Prospero, Mercutio, and Marcus of Titus Andronicus, Kevin Gates surrendered to the lure of Renaissance drama and enrolled in a Ph.D. program at Texas State. His partner and executive producer Bridget Farias has been running the EmilyAnn Theatre in Wimberley with summer "Shakespeare under the Stars" for young persons and an annual Shakespeare play by adult actors in the fall.


Aaron Black has played Austin stages as Hamlet and as Brutus since his arrival here several years ago. Director Christina Gutierrez had done dramatugy for Austin Shakespeare and others, co-founded the 7 Towers Theatre Company, directed John Ford's Tis Pity She's a Whore at the Cathedral of Junk, and has just turned in her Ph.D. thesis for UT's Program of Performance as Public Practice.

This Richard II is additionally garlanded with Austin acting regulars Suzanne Balling, Travis Bedard, David Boss, Robert Deike and D. Heath Thompson, so if you've seen any Shakespeare at all in this town outside of the 40 acres or other educational confines, you'll probably see some familiar faces on these chilly evenings at Richard Garriott's reduced-scale Elizabethan-style theatre on the north shore of Lake Austin.


The company's title suggests the degree of its devotion to the bard and to the craft. Kevin Gates is an adamant advocate of fidelity to the texts as a way of realizing the intents of the playwrights, so perhaps it's appropriate to search out the phrase, which comes from Act IV of Cymbeline, within a deus-ex-machina scene rare for Shakespeare.

Austin Shakespeare pairs fun activities and the festive atmosphere of a birthday party at Shakespeare’s 448^th Birthday Party at the Curtain Theater and Castleton Village. Proceeds support Austin Shakespeare and Free Shakespeare in the Park.

Guests can learn to fence, go on a scavenger hunt, hear music and play games, all in a lovely lakeside setting. Kids and adults will perform scenes from Shakespeare. Enjoy craft making, delicious food, mask-making, fencing, even a fort and a pirate ship. And, of course, cake!

This will be a wonderful way for families to enjoy a beautiful spring afternoon playing games, fly in a swing, make crafts, learn to fence, listen to music, play bocce ball, and go on a fun-filled scavenger hunt culminating in lots of prizes.

Some of Austin’s talented young actors will perform scenes at the Curtain Theater, a Treasure hunt will begin at 1pm and 2:30 pm, and the Blowing out of the Candles on Shakespeare’s Birthday cake will be at 3:30 pm.

Tickets are $12 for adults; $7 for children under 12, children 2 and under free. Tickets available only at the event. Parking is free.

Henry V by Shakespeare, The Baron's Men at the Curtain Theatre, September 30 - October 22

This Henry V by The Baron's Men is a feast for the eyes. The elaborate Elizabethan wardrobe of the company goes well with the gratifying outdoor setting of the Curtain Theatre, Richard Garriott's lakeside replica in miniature of the Globe. Costume designers Pam Martin and Dawn Allee are current nominees along with Jennifer Davis for Austin's B. Iden Payne stage award for outstanding costume design, for this company's 2010 production of A Midsummer Night's Dream. For Henry V they've outdone even that outstanding level of accomplishment.

Their program notes acknowledge the work and care that went into these recreations -- "the more than a dozen doublets designed and manufactured for this production, as well as several different designs of pants (trunk hose, venetians, and pumpkin hose). These clothes could not have been made without the dedication and love of the troupe members who donated many hours and some very late nights to complete the costuming."

The company establishes and sustains the Elizabethan illusion by placing cast members onstage both before the piece begins and during much of the intermission. Pikesmen station themselves on watch and parade to the beaten command of drums; Henry and his confederates stand at upper center stage studying a huge, meticulously designed map of the kingdoms on both sides of the Channel. At intermission the guard is again mounted, and Pistol sits moodily at the edge of the stage.

Troilus and Cressida, Austin Young Shakespeare at the Curtain Theatre, June 23 - July 3

Although the performance took place in the idyllic lakeside setting for The Curtain Theatre, Troilus and Cressida was no picnic. Austin Shakespeare put this summer's 16-member Young Shakespeare teen troupe into one of Shakespeare's grimmest and most cynical works.

The epic characters of Homer's Iliad manifest gallantry and heroic courtesy, and the Trojan lovebirds Troilus and Cressida, grafted from medieval courtly romances via Chaucer, plunge into oaths and carnal pleasure. But the guiding spirits here are lechery in the form of uncle Panderus and spite, in the figure of bitter, railing Thersites. Shakespeare viciously undercuts the build toward the romance as King Priam sends gentle Cressida to her traitor father Calcas in the Greek camp in exchange for a captured Trojan noble. The playwright gratifies the audience with some exultant, head-banging combat between heroes but then empties the meaning from their courtesies in the final scene when Achilles ambushes the weaponless Hector and cuts his throat.
