Robert Faires Interview: Murder Ballad Murder Mystery Saloon Tour

Austin Chronicle

'Murder Ballad Murder Mystery'

Paper Chairs resurrects its hit musical as portable, hit-and-run bar entertainment

By Robert Faires, Fri., Nov. 15, 2013

Murder Ballad Murder Mystery Elizabeth Doss Austin TXUsually, when a play reaches the end of its run, it's dead, departed, gone with the wind. Once in a while, though, a show gets pulled back from oblivion, and such is the case with Murder Ballad Murder Mystery, the backwoods musical by Elizabeth Doss (book) and Mark Stewart (score) that scored critical raves and multiple awards when it premiered in 2009. Now, like the ghost-faced killers who populate its swampy setting, it once more walks among us – only this time the show won't be haunting a theatre as it did in its original co-production by Tutto Theatre and Vortex Repertory Company, and it won't be the full-length, site-specific spectacle seen before. Paper Chairs, the company that grew out of that staging, has reconceived the show as a shorter, portable production to be presented in saloons. The new incarnation will debut at three local watering holes, as well as one in New Orleans (for the New Orleans Fringe Festival), and one in Marfa. The cast has been whittled down to eight characters, and director Keri Boyd and designer Lisa Laratta have worked to make the space adaptable to any environment. Playwright/performer Doss explains the show's second life in an email exchange.

Austin Live Theatre profile

by Dr. David Glen Robinson

A Participating Artist's Impressions

The artists stood at easels or sat at drawing tables in the well of the theatre, downstage center, or more aptly, house center. The stage was multilevel, rising before us and offering sightlines better than in most figurative art workshops. The lighting on the models was also much better than in any workshop. My choice of oil on canvas as the medium ensured no relaxation on my part. I sweated and labored continually, and my brushes and charcoals hummed throughout the show; I panted through the entire five-minute break the artists were given in the middle of the performance. But my earnest efforts had actually begun before the show, with hauling four loads of art equipment and supplies from my pickup into the theatre. And I thought I had a minimal setup! Lesson: Oil painting never allows a minimal setup.

I was a guest artist for one evening performance of Paper Chairs’ Art Show/Model Show at the Offshoot Theatre in East Austin, where creativity seemsy always to find new and brilliant expression. This show simulated in its setting an art class or workshop, where artists actually strive for, well, something in the realm of figurative art. The workshop setting gave rise to the need for working artists in the show, and so I signed up. But it was the art models/actors who controlled the action and gave all the lines and spoke all the texts in the show. The only artists who spoke were those who did so in projected video interviews on a screen above the stage.

The art models, you may surmise, showed some attitude, i.e., ‘tude, and with good reason. Artists and art models exist in an archetypical relationship. They have left their traces on Paleolithic cave walls and in every succeeding stage of world art since that time, with the possible exceptions of Hebraic and Islamic art. In all those eras, expression and communication were the province of the artists, while the fully exposed models remained silent, ultimately and ironically invisible in terms of their identities, female or male. The model merely provided a useful form for the visual telling of allegories and mythic adventures. The exception of portrait art proves the rule: there, the dominance of the artist fell away when painting a fully empowered and clothed king, queen or aristocrat as portrait subject, not model. The portrait titles are the names of those depicted.

The models who created Art Show/Model Show raged against all of that. They spoke and the artists remained silent. Art instruction videos contextualized their world, and then the models offered commentary on it all, never more hilariously than when model Kelli Bland walked among the artists in faux art teacher mode giving ironic, almost snide, instructions in how to draw body parts, mostly by making impersonal and insensitive comments about “the model.” (“You can’t see that bone on that model, but it is there under all her fat.”) All models have heard such brutally clinical and basically rude comments in the course of their modeling careers.

ART SHOW/MODEL SHOW is a multi-media performance that has been in development over the past year, earning a listing as one of the “Six stops to make your 2012 East Austin Studio Tour extra special” from Austin Chronicle’s Robert Faires and running a workshop performance in FronteraFest’s Mi Casa es su Teatro. Devised by performers who work as models in Austin’s visual arts community, this collaborative performance is also an exploration in documentary theatre, with interviews of local artists and models as well as live drawing and painting. It will also include a gallery show, curated by the Austin artists who hire these models.

ART SHOW/MODEL SHOW aspires to be: an honest representation of this (usually) very private world, a life drawing session, a living gallery, an exercise in perspective and time, a conversation about the purpose of art in society, and an intimate look at the singular relationship between the artist and model in the creative process.

ART SHOW/MODEL SHOW is a multi-media, interactive performance experiment undergoing creation by Kelli Bland, Meghan Adriel Dwyer, Michelle Keffer, Jorge Sermini and Elizabeth Doss based on our experiences as art models. The piece will investigate three folds of art modeling that interest us: the physical experience, the contemporary and historical context, and the queries we encounter in the discipline. Paper Chairs is excited to present our most fruitful findings at the end of summer 2013!

ART SHOW/MODEL SHOW aspires to be these things: a living gallery, a life drawing session, a voyeuristic experiment, a lesson in drawing and art history, a conversation about the purpose of art in society, and an intimate look at the relationship between the artist and model in figurative art.
This collaborative performance will include live drawing and painting by local Austin artists. Alongside the composition of timed poses and staged scenes will be sensorial stimulation, including documentary-style footage and sound bites pieced together from interviews with local artists and models, as well as live drawing projections. It will also include a gallery show, curated by the Austin artists who hire us, and will be presented, or rather, categorized by each model, so that the audience can see the varied and unique perceptions of each individual person

Boom for Real by Jason Tremblay, Paper Chairs at the Museum of Human Achievement, October 25 - November 10

Boom for Real Jason Tremblay Paper Chairs Austin TX

Austin Live Theatre review

by Dr. David Glen Robinson

It was Halloween night and I went to the theatre in costume as I always do. The show was Boom for Real by Jason Tremblay, produced by Paper Chairs. This company has a gift for finding truly unusual but serviceable performance spaces, albeit sometimes hard to find. I tramped through the crushed limestone parking lot of an industrial east Austin construction zone in my wobbly fireman’s boots, uncertain of my balance and vision behind my long-nosed mask and worried that I might be showing too much skin. I am such a typical Austinite.

The venue, by railroad tracks and near the old Blue Theatre (I could see the lights of Weird City Theatre’s Halloween party going on there) was the pretentiously named Museum of Human Achievement. It was a museum wearing a wooden frame warehouse costume. The production was of the multilevel, open-stages type, where the cast changes the set (all set objects are on casters), and lighting cues shift the audience’s focus and attention from scene to scene. A costume rack for the cast stood upstage right. Creative values were very much to the fore, technological artifice a little to the back.

The heavily costumed audience knew what was expected of them in this twenty-first-century mode and seemed highly appreciative.

The story was set in mythic time and a kind of post-industrial-punk space. The world is drowning in a never-ending fall of ash, straight into the mouths of all the characters. A leading dancer has suffered a disfigurement, and with her single flash-memory chip of magic she banishes dance from the world city, a curse so severe that the word dance is also banned, replaced by the word petunias. The dancer becomes a witch living in a tower above the city, where she can watch and enforce the curse. A young dancer, Boom, played by Ashley Rae Spillers, discovers that it is her fate to bring dance back.

The theme here is ambition, served by its demon servant desire, at many different levels. Desire as lust is well portrayed, but desire for transformation, success, money, alcohol, nicotine and life itself suffuse the story so thoroughly that it is hard to keep track of all the categories. They suffer a blending effect and also cause the story to seem to ramble a bit.

paper chairs enthusiastically announces the premiere production of Boom for Real, a new work by Austin playwright Jason Tremblay.

Boom for Real Jason Tremblay paper chairs Austin TXWhen the world's greatest dancer is ghoulishly disfigured in a fire, she trades her heart to regain her physical beauty. But this shady deal robs her of her greatest gift: her ability to dance. So she sets a curse on the rest of the world, abolishing all dancing forever. Time passes and bleakness grows beneath a grey sky raining ash until a young spritely seamstress,
Boom, unearths secrets to the past. Smoking rats in sewers, a seedy theatre with talking walls, and ghosts lurking in the mirror send Boom on a journey to lift the curse. What happens when the world is free to dance again? Just outside the spotlight, lies the dark side to ambition and the price we pay when following our hearts.

THE COMPANY: Boom for Real's ineffable cast features Hugo Vargas-Zesati, Dallas Tate, Kelly Hasandras, Noel Gaulin, Jacob Trussell, Michelle Keffer, Letty Evans, Pilar Andujar and Ashley Rae Spillers as Boom.

Mark Stewart will compose an original score and lead a live band including Christopher Johnson, KhattieQ, and Deb Norris.

The design team comprised of Natalie George (lights), Benjamin Taylor Ridgway (costumes), and Lisa Laratta (scenic) will transform a raw warehouse into a looming land fit for black fairy tale. Choreography by Elizabeth Doss. Keri Boyd will direct the entire raucous shebang.

Reviews from Elsewhere: Woodwork by Hank Schwemmer, Paper Chairs, February 17 - March 4,reviewed by David Glen Robinson

Posted at the Tutto Theatre website, February 26, by David Glen Robinson:

Woodwork
is another Woodwork Hank Schwemmer Paper Chairs Austin TXproduction taking place in a warehouse, this time the huge Delta Millworks factory at 5th St. and Springdale Road in east Austin. Again I say “Aah, east Austin.” The place by its very existence gives the theatre world extremely rich settings and imagery, seemingly without end. The setting could not be more apt for presenting this dense, colorful and fantastically textured collection of six one-acts by Austin playwright Hank Schwemmer. The place was well-designed and prepared when the seating (no paper chairs) was set out around the space. I complimented scenic designer and director Lisa Laratta (one of four directors of these plays) that she had even designed in the sweet, aromatic wood fragrance that permeates the place. She said, “Yeah, that and the popcorn smell—it can’t be all one thing, you know.”

Upcoming: Wood Work by Hank Schwemmer, Paper Chairs at Delta Lumber, February 17 - March

Announced via Twitter and Facebook, January 29:

enthusiastically announces its fourth production

Woodwork: A Collection of Hank Schwemmer Plays

February 17 - [March 3?], times and dates TBA
Wood Work by Hank Schwemmer Paper Chairs

Delta Lumber and Millworks, 4701 E. 5th, near Springdale (click for map)

Long time favorite of Frontera Fest and Austin Script Works, local playwright Hank Schwemmer has devoted over fifteen years to crafting singular theatrical experiences that supersede most fringe theater’s penchant for experimentation.

While Schwemmer may be a veritable master of self-producing, Paper Chairs unanimously agreed a fully realized production of his work was long overdue. Over several months, the company selected a handful of Schwemmer’s unique offerings that together create a surprising world filled with peculiar characters in far-out circumstances, but consistently hit staggeringly close to home.

Paper Chairs is excited to break ground in a new performance space: Delta Millworks, on East Fifth across the street from Justine’s Brasserie. Since he's a carpenter by trade, Schemmer’s work will feel right at home in the evocatively vast and shadowy woodshop.

Paper Chairs has assembled a top-notch team to bring
Woodwork to life. Collaborating directors Kelli Bland, Keri Boyd, Elizabeth Doss and Lisa Laratta (also delivering scenic design) will integrate the evening piece by piece. The sharp cast features Sonnet Blanton (Baal), Zac Crofford (Riddley Walker), Chase Crossno (Machinal), Mark Stewart (Hillcountry Underbelly), Emily Tindall (Hillcountry Underbelly), Hugo Vargas- Zesati (69 Love Scenes), and Noel Gaulin (I’ve Never Been So Happy.)

Paper Chairs promises yet again another unforgettable evening of locally crafted theatre. Don’t miss
Woodwork!

Paper Chairs excitedly announces its third production, Hillcountry Underbelly: A Pilgrimage on the Outskirts, written by Elizabeth Doss, with original music by Mark Stewart, directed by Dustin Wills and Keri Boyd.

Pa’s fall down a deathtrap rattles through the land like thunder. His ghost appears in limestone, prophesying a great flood will take the hillcountry by storm. His six surviving orphans must head to higher ground to elude their demise. Watch the pack aim to outrun and outsmart every obstacle on the outskirts in the fierce pursuit of life. How do you survive a flood when you’ve lost your roots? Paper Chairs will flood the VORTEX Yard and wash away a scorching August in an environmental production of this torrential tale. Holes, floods, tunes, dogs and buzzards abound. Prepare for a soaking.

Featuring performances by Robert Pierson as Pa (2011 Critic’s Table and 2010 B. Iden Payne Best Supporting Actor), Caroline Reck as the Theotokos, and Jacob Trussell, Emily Tindall, Noel Gaulin, Kelli Bland, Jenn Hartmann, and Mark Stewart as the orphans – oh, and musicians too.

Hillcountry Underbelly will be presented in the VORTEX yard – we encourage folks to dress down! The Butterfly Bar will sell cooling refreshments and Paper Chairs will offer bug spray (if needed), fans, mist, general comfort and an outhouse – you can even bring your own chair if you don’t like ours.

Paper Chairs creates sensorially dynamic theatre combining fractured subjectivity, music, unconventional audience situation, surrealism and labor-intensive mechanics. We favor challenging texts that allow for a fusion of various performance styles, music genres, and historical periods to excite modern sensibilities and educate by suggesting past and present cultural connections. The work is outrageous, well-researched, and a little bit dangerous.
