Very many know the story of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but in this new musical version it's a fantasy for today - mysterious, opulent and fanciful - a dream conjured up by a space-age child with Dorothy's adventures in the Land of Oz set to music in a dazzling, lively mixture of rock, gospel and soul.

The Renaissance Guild and Pennington Productions will hold open calls for the 2011 non-Equity performances of The Wiz. Directed by Jonathan Pennington, Assistant Director Jovi Lee Gonzales; Choreography by Danielle Martinez, Ashlee Pryor, Tiffany McCall; Musical Direction by Hector Serna and Ben Carlee; Casting by Jonathan Pennington, Kurt Wehner, Hector Serna, Ben Carlee, Twyla Lamont, Cyndi Lucas, Danielle King, Paul Riddle, Jr.

Rehearsals begin May 2, 2011; show opens at Carver Community Cultural Center July 8 and runs until July 24. The Wiz will have a second run at Woodlawn Theatre September 2, 2011 and is until September 18, 2011.

· "Radiates so much energy you can hardly sit in your seat ... Great fun." New York Post
· "
A carnival of fun ... Wickedly amusing." Time Magazine
·
"One of the most cyclonic blasts to hit Broadway in a long time." Newsweek
·
"A virtual musical circus ... Driving rhythms, soaring songs ... Boisterous, exuberant." WABC

While similar in plot to "The Wizard of Oz", The Wiz usually uses an all-black cast to transform the show into a more fun, funky modern version. Dorothy, the little girl from Kansas is blown by a tornado into Munchkinland in the Land Of Oz. While there she meets the Scarecrow, the Tinman & the Cowardly Lion on the Yellow Brick Road. She defeats the evil witch and goes to see the powerful Wizard who turns out to be a phoney. However, he is able to convince Dorothy that she can do anything she wants if she just believes in herself. Dorothy also realizes the importance of home and her family.

Auditionees with a specific role preference should prepare the song specified in the character breakdown. If you do not have a role preference; that is, you would be equally content with any role in the show, please prepare 32 bars of a legitimate musical theatre song that best demonstrates your vocal abilities and range. If this is the case, please bring an accompaniment track, as no accompanist will be provided. Please dress to character as you see fit, but be prepared to dance. No monologue is necessary for this audition. Bring your headshot and resume (stapled together) to your audition.

All auditionees must email penningtonproductions@live.com to schedule an audition time. Email contact is Carol Wade. Please provide role preference in the body of the email.

All requests for audition time or information must be sent by email.
