Upcoming: Boogie Monster Mash by Dave Cortez, Fools Entertainment at the Woodlawn black box, San Antonio, October 6 - 28

Woodlawn Theatre San Antonio TX

(*) BOOGIE MONSTER MASH, Woodlawn Theatre, San Antonio,

Fools Entertainment is proud to announce our next production! "Boogie Monster Mash" playing at the Woodlawn Theatre Black Box this October!

Boogie Monster Mash

by Dave Cortez
A Monster, Musical, Melodrama

Set in Transylvania, Boogie Monster Mash follows the perils of Mary Wollstonecraft and her dear old Granmummy as they deal with the evil Count Dracula and his quest to take control of their beloved castle. Count Dracula has eyes to turn the Wollstonecraft castle into a fast food restaurant, but that's not all he has his beady eyes set on. He plans to woo Mary and make her his bride, even if it's against her wishes. It's up to Mary's dashing leading man Frankenstan to come to her rescue, along with the aid of his best pal the Zombuddy. But will Dracula, along with his own side-kick, Bad Bad Wolfie Brown, and his dissatisfied girlfriend, Vampiress be victorious? Will Frankenstan save the Wollstonecraft Castle? And will Count Dracula be put to rest once and for all?
Boogie Monster Mash follows along in traditional melodrama fashion as you cheer the hero, boo the villain, and wish for the heroine to triumph. Set to parodys of some of your favorite disco songs of the 70's such as “Stayin' Alive”, “I Will Survive”, and “Boogie Wonderland” the story is told by a lively trio called the Zombettes as they guide you along this horror-campy story while you fling plenty of popcorn at Count Dracula himself. Get your “boos”, “hisses”, and popcorn throwing arms ready for this monster, musical, melodrama!

A Bright Room Called Day

Playwright(s): Tony Kushner

Tony Kushner's A Bright Room Called Day is a dark comedy dawning in pre-war Berlin, in the last days of Weimar Germany. An idealistic group of actors, writers, and filmmakers naively assume they can stop Hitler's juggernaut through art and political action. As they slowly realize they are losing to the Nazis-and that their lives are at risk-the friends must choose the paths they'll take: resistance, compromise, exile, or compliance. What choice will mean survival? A genre-defying mixture of absurd humor, serious drama, and political thriller, A Bright Room Called Day examines the nature of evil and the role of the artist as activist.

Vexler Theatre in San Antonio preparing Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross, RSVPs for auditions & crew by August 31

Vexler Theatre San AntonioComing Soon: Glengarry Glen Ross by David Mamet. Audition Date TBA. Please inform us of your interest by August 31st.

ACTORS/ DESIGNERS/ TECHNICIANS/ STAGE MANAGERS/ CREW/ DIRECTORS/ ETC:

The Sheldon Vexler Theatre in San Antonio is currently designing a specialized project for the production of
Glengarry Glen Ross by David Mamet. If you have an interest in this particular script, please email vexler@jcc-sa.org by Friday, August 31st. Include a good contact phone number. Theatrical resume is optional, not required. Please see below for logistical details on performance dates and the rehearsal period.

Casting 8 characters aged 30s and up. Casting will include both male and female actors.
Performances February 7- March 3, 2013, Thursdays at 7:30pm, Saturdays at 8:00pm, Sunday matinees at 2:30pm, and Sunday evening shows at 7:30pm on 2/24 and 3/3. Call times are 60 minutes before curtain.

Rehearsals will begin with a few meetings, read-throughs, and table work sessions in December. A typical Vex rehearsal schedule is Monday- Thursday 7pm-10pm. Friday and weekend rehearsals are scheduled as needed throughout the rehearsal period. The final two weeks and weekends of rehearsals include technical and dress rehearsals with the full company called.

Glengarry Glen Ross is Mamet at his very best, writing about small-time, cutthroat real estate salesmen trying to grind out a living by pushing plots of land on reluctant buyers in a never-ending scramble for their share of the American dream. The Vex presents a new twist to the traditionally all-male cast by converting a few of the characters to women, touching on current issues of female competition in male-dominated industries. The script for Glengarry Glen Ross can be found at some bookstores, on Ebooks such as the Kindle, and at the licensing agency Samuel French.

A Bright Room Called Day
by Tony Kushner
directed by Susanna Morrow
September 28-30 and October 3-6, 2012 Friday & Saturday @ 8pm Sunday @ 2:30pm Wednesday & Thursday @ 7pm
Tony Kushner’s A Bright Room Called Day is a dark comedy dawning in pre-war Berlin, in the last days of Weimar Germany. An idealistic group of actors, writers, and filmmakers naively assume they can stop Hitler's juggernaut through art and political action. As they slowly realize they are losing to the Nazis—and that their lives are at risk—the friends must choose the paths they’ll take: resistance, compromise, exile, or compliance. La Tempesta
adapted from Shakespeare by Roberto Prestigiacomo
produced in collaboration with Theatro del Drago, a puppet theatre company founded in 1820 by the Monticelli Family of Revenna, Italy.
November 9-11 and November 14-17, 2012 Friday and Saturday @8pm Sunday @ 2:30pm Wednesday and Thursday @ 7pm

La Tempesta
is an original physical theatre adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Created by the 2012-13 Stieren Guest, Artist Teatro del Drago, from Ravenna, Italy, and Roberto Prestigiacomo, La Tempesta re-tells this magical story through the use of puppets, marionettes, and shadow theatre. Borrowing from the Italian tradition of commedia dell’arte and the latest European developments of teatro di figura, La Tempesta promises to be entertaining, visually stunning, and a novelty never seen on the stages of San Antonio.

Arcadia
by Tom Stoppard
directed by Stacey Connelly
February 15-17 and 20-23, 2013 Friday & Saturday @ 8pm Sunday @ 2:30pm Wednesday & Thursday @ 7pm

In 1809, on an idyllic country estate in Derbyshire, England, a 13-year-old genius and her tutor are about to make history with a brilliant mathematical proof, now lost to history. In the same location, two hundred years later, rival authors—a popular historian and a self-promoting academic—are in a mad, lusty, and hilarious race to uncover that secret. The characters’ quests become an obsessive intellectual scavenger hunt, leading to sexual intrigue, shocking discoveries, absurd conclusions, and mortifying misadventures that span and blend both eras. Such is the glorious, topsy-turvy world of Arcadia, described by critics as Tom Stoppard’s masterwork.

The Crazy Locomotive
by Stanislaw Witkiewicz
directed by Kyle Gillette
April 12-14 and April 17-20, 2013 Friday and Saturday @ 8pm Sunday @ 2:30pm Wednesday & Thursday @ 7pm

Stanislaw Witkiewicz's 1923 play The Crazy Locomotive both parodies and embodies the artistic movement of futurism as well as Einstein's theory of relativity and the melodramatic conventions of silent film. Set aboard the engine room of a train hurtling toward its destruction, the play features a projected cinematic backdrop of the landscape hurtling by and the large frightening machinery of industrial modernity. As two international criminal masterminds hijack the train, they ponder the meaning of space, time, and modern art, all while driving the train toward unprecedented speeds and losing their minds in the process. Provocative, absurd, and hilarious, Witkiewicz's play asks big questions about the progress of industrial civilization and the fatal course of history.

Texas Public Radio Profiles Woodlawn Theatre's 'Next to Normal' in San Antonio

Texas Public Radio publishes the transcription of its three-minute feature on Next to Normal, playing July 13 - 29 at the Woodlawn Theatre in San Antonio:

Texas Public Radio"Next To Normal" is a Pulitzer Prize winning play showing at the Woodlawn Theater, “which is absolutely fantastic that a musical would win the Pulitzer Prize for a drama," said Woodlawn's Robby Vance. "This show is incredibly well written, it obviously covers a gamut of emotions, it covers a broad range of various interactions and relationships that we have as families and family structures.”
Next to Normal Woodlawn Theatre San Antonio TX
(image: Woodlawn Theatre via www.tpr.org)

Vance said it is a provocative script. It’s the story of a woman whose mental disorders seem to be getting worse, and of her family who struggle to cope.

“In this case it’s a young woman who is diagnosed as bi-polar," said Artistic Director Greg Hinojosa, "which eventually leads to schizophrenia, suicide attempts. She goes through shock therapy. So she goes through a number of different treatments that seem to be helping her but what we see in this show
is how it affects her husband, her younger daughter and certainly the relationships she has with both of her doctors.”

The show has been called “brave” and “breathtaking.” And it proved to be a great opportunity to expand the theater’s mission.

“Our goal is to increase our visibility to the city in terms of a theatre company that produces not only quality work, but work that’s going to be thought provoking and educational” said Hinojosa.

The Woodlawn partnered Next to Normal with the San Antonio State Hospital. Its cast went to the hospital and served as volunteers. At the Sunday matinee, the theater offered a chance for audience members to become more educated about mental illness, thanks to Dr. Kathleen Stanley, a clinical psychiatrist at the hospital, who stayed for over an hour after the show to answer audience questions.

“About how to seek treatment for family members and loved ones who they suspect might have problems with mental illness or what do you do if you have somebody in your family who is per chance being belligerent and you know that they need to seek treatment but they refuse.”

Can you spell M-U-S-I-C-A-L?
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a one-act musical comedy conceived by Rebecca Feldman with music and lyrics by Willian Finn, a book by Rachel Sheinkin and additional material by Jay Reiss. The show centers on a fictional spelling bee set in a geographically ambiguous Putnam Valley Middle School. Six quirky adolescents compete in the Bee, run by three equally quirky grown-ups.

Get ready to flex your spelling muscles as each night four REAL audience members will be invited onstage to compete in the spelling bee alongside the six young characters! About half an hour before the show begins, audience members in the lobby are given the chance to sign up to participate in the show as “spellers”!
Shhhhh….

On Saturday nights, adult-only audiences (over age 18) are invited for “Parent-Teacher Conferences.” These performances are peppered with references inspired by R-rated ad-libs made during rehearsals.

Did you know….
**During the 2005 Tony Awards, former Presidential candidate Al Sharpton competed.
**Julie Andrews missed ”Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” when she was a guest speller.
