In an effort to get medical help for Alabama tenant farmers, their nurse, Miss Evers, convinces them to join a government study to treat venereal disease. When the money runs out, Nurse Evers is faced with a difficult decision: to tell the men that they are no longer being treated and that they are now part of a research study to see what untreated syphilis will do to them, or follow the lead of the doctor she respects and the tenets of the nursing profession.Miss Evers' Boys Renaissance Guild San Antonio

Nurse Evers follows the advice of her advisors, and with the understanding that the study can help thousands more, she does not tell the men they are no longer receiving medication. She does this with the assurance that as soon as medication becomes available, her men will be the first to receive it. But after fourteen years of caring for her patients as if they were family, when medication is finally available, it is denied to her study group. Nurse Evers, devastated at the news and starting to watch her men die, can no longer keep silent.

Shunned for her silence of fourteen years, Nurse Evers holds her head up and explains the reasons and emotions that kept her in the study and kept her caring for her men. Some of them forgive her, others do not, as Nurse Evers tries to put back a world broken by prejudice, disease, time and trust.

Very many know the story of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, but in this new musical version it's a fantasy for today - mysterious, opulent and fanciful - a dream conjured up by a space-age child with Dorothy's adventures in the Land of Oz set to music in a dazzling, lively mixture of rock, gospel and soul.

The Renaissance Guild and Pennington Productions will hold open calls for the 2011 non-Equity performances of The Wiz. Directed by Jonathan Pennington, Assistant Director Jovi Lee Gonzales; Choreography by Danielle Martinez, Ashlee Pryor, Tiffany McCall; Musical Direction by Hector Serna and Ben Carlee; Casting by Jonathan Pennington, Kurt Wehner, Hector Serna, Ben Carlee, Twyla Lamont, Cyndi Lucas, Danielle King, Paul Riddle, Jr.

Rehearsals begin May 2, 2011; show opens at Carver Community Cultural Center July 8 and runs until July 24. The Wiz will have a second run at Woodlawn Theatre September 2, 2011 and is until September 18, 2011.

While similar in plot to "The Wizard of Oz", The Wiz usually uses an all-black cast to transform the show into a more fun, funky modern version. Dorothy, the little girl from Kansas is blown by a tornado into Munchkinland in the Land Of Oz. While there she meets the Scarecrow, the Tinman & the Cowardly Lion on the Yellow Brick Road. She defeats the evil witch and goes to see the powerful Wizard who turns out to be a phoney. However, he is able to convince Dorothy that she can do anything she wants if she just believes in herself. Dorothy also realizes the importance of home and her family.
