Shakespeare under the Stars EmilyAnn Wimberley

The EmilyAnn Theatre was founded to provide a permanent home for Shakespeare Under the Stars (SUS), now in its 23rd season (and its 14th season at the EmilyAnn). Shakespeare Under the Stars is a unique educational program for middle and high school students who study and perform one of Shakespeare's plays. Students audition in May and memorize their lines before they arrive in late July. All actors are of high school age or younger.

Students also select an area of technical theatre (set construction, costuming, or lighting) on which to focus. College interns and theatre professionals mentor students in acting and the technical theatre areas. With guidance from the artistic director and interns, students collaborate in the construction of the costumes and sets. When not working on their assigned technical area, students rehearse with their director, working on acting and the understanding of Shakespeare's plays. The 6-week experience culminates with the production of 12 performances of full-length plays.

A young African-American carpenter wanders into an early 1900s Southern town where black people are prohibited after sundown; his friendship with a blind Confederate veteran confronts the conventions and beliefs of the community and the church, and uproots a sympathetic family. This musical play stares unblinkingly at a dark corner of American history through fascinating characters who tell their stories through a well-crafted drama, which features a driving musical score built around traditional instrumentals and songs of the era.

Happy Birthday is a comedy for two men and three women. Bernard has somewhat foolhardily asked his mistress, Brigit, to his home on her birthday despite the fact that his wife Jacqueline is present. To lull Jacqueline's suspicions he has also invited his oldest friend, Robert, and asks him to complete the cover-up by pretending that Brigit is his own mistress. Robert refuses, since he has been having an affair with Jacqueline, but Bernard involves him by low cunning. By chance, a temporary maid Jacqueline has engaged for the evening arrives when Jacqueline and Bernard are out and, her name also being Brigit, Robert mistakes her for Bernard's girl friend. Thus are laid the foundations for a shaky edifice of frantic complications, in which identities, plots and counterplots—and bedrooms—are changed round with ever increasing confusion until an unexpected ending is reached which leaves everyone happy—not least the "temporary" Brigit who has acquired a mink coat and a wad of cash.

Considered by many to be the most charming musical ever written, it is the rare musical theatre aficionado who doesn’t have a soft spot in his heart for this intimate show.

Georg and Amalia are two feuding clerks in a European parfumerie during the Holiday Season in the1930s. They secretly find solace in their anonymous romantic pen pals, little knowing their respective correspondents are none other than each other.

Funny, intelligent, honest and sentimental, She Loves Me is a warm romantic comedy with an endearing innocence and a touch of old world elegance and nostalgia, yet as universal and relevant as ever in this age of internet romances.

Arsenic and Old Lace, Wimberley Players

by Michael Meigs

Joseph Kesselring's 1941 play Arsenic and Old Lace is a "golden oldie" kept alive for American culture by Frank Capra's 1944 film with Cary Grant and by community theatre productions such as the charming one currently at the playhouse in Wimberley.

Theatre critic Mortimer Brewster has been brought up his maiden aunts Abby and Martha, and one wonders how he escaped noticing the fact that they're nuttier than fruitcakes. Mortimer's brother Teddy stalks about the place, throughly convinced that he's President Teddy Roosevelt.

Dan Williams, Judith Laird, Derek Smootz Arsenic and Old Lace Wimberley PlayersJust as romance is blossoming for the drama critic (who despises the theatre), he discovers that his sweet aunts have been cheerfully poisoning lonely old men and encouraging Teddy to bury them in the cellar as victims of yellow fever at the Panama Canal. Mortimer just might be able to resolve those problems if he could get all three members of his deranged family shuttled off to the Happydale Asylum, but another complication turns up: his long-lost second brother, the homicidal Jonathan, accompanied by a plastic surgeon of questionable ethics and not much talent.

The comedy of the piece springs from the juxtaposition of the thoroughly normal -- doting spinster aunts in their tidy frame house in Brooklyn -- with the deranged and the depraved, creating a bubbling pot that Derek Smootz as the reasonable, rational male lead must keep contained. It's most inconvenient to find unexpected corpses in the window seat and in the trunk of bad brother Jonathan's automobile. All that while trying to keep his increasingly bewildered and annoyed fiancée Elaine (Celeste Coburn) uninformed and out of the way.

The Tempest, EmilyAnn Theatre, September 9 - October 1

ALT review

Laura Ray The Tempest EmilyAnn Theatre, Wimberley

In this hottest Texas summer on record you could be pardoned for suffering a touch of cognitive dissonance when you decide to drive through the beginnings of the Hill Country, 45 minutes southwest of Austin, to attend Shakespeare's last work, set upon a magical island surrounded by the Mediterranean. Wimberley, Texas, is ranch country, and these days the rolling landscape is starkly dry. Even the EmilyAnn's illustration reveals the situation: Laura Ray, portraying magician's daughter Miranda, stands in the low waters of the Blanco River. These days the water is Prospero's refuge and the ocean is the countless miles of sun-toasted ranchland.

The EmilyAnn is a special place, however, something of a magic refuge all to itself. The play begins at dusk, so my wife K. and I had plenty of time to chat with the friendly folk at the ticket window and the concession stand. One strolls through a carefully tended garden on the way to the outdoor amphitheatre. My wife stopped and listened -- one could hear the distinct cheerful trickle of water slipping from pool to pool. With that prelude it became that much easier to enter the agreed meeting place of Prospero's imaginary island.

Hay Fever

Tuesday, May 24, 7:00 p.m.

Director - Laura Haygood, Executive Producer- Adam Witko

Show Dates July 29 – Aug 21, Friday and Saturday Evenings 8:00 p.m., Sunday Matinees 2:30 p.m.

This show is a zany comedy which will be staged with exaggerated characters and comedic movements. I will be looking to fill a cast of 9, 4 men and 5 women. One couple is older, a novelist and retired actress now staying in their country home. They are joined by their 2 adult children and 4 guests. There is a small role as a maid. This will be a fun show to work on: light humor for the hot summer.

Hay Fever is set in the hall of the Bliss family home. The eccentric Blisses—Judith, a recently retired stage actress, David, a self-absorbed novelist, and their two equally unconventional children— live in a world where reality slides easily into fiction. Upon entering this world, the unfortunate weekend guests—a proper diplomat, a shy flapper, an athletic boxer, and a fashionable sophisticate— are repeatedly thrown into melodramatic scenes wherein their hosts profess emotions and react to situations that do not really exist. The resulting comedic chaos ends only when the tortured visitors tip-toe out the door.

The Heiress, Wimberley Players

The Heiress by Ruth and Augustus Goetz is an adaptation of Henry James's novel Washington Square. The play launches the Wimberley Players 2011 season and will run for four consecutive weekends.

This Tony Award winning drama is set in the drawing room of a mansion in an affluent residential square in New York City during the 1850’s. It immerses us in the life of Catherine Sloper, a wealthy, yet commonplace, young woman of a retiring and reserved disposition. Unexpectedly, she meets and is wooed by an attractive young man, Morris Townsend, and ultimately falls desperately in love.

We witness Catherine’s anguish, and feel her pain as she is torn between her wealthy father, Dr. Austin Sloper, who has dominated her life since birth, and the promise of a bright future with a man she dared not dream could be hers. Add to this mix a foolish, meddlesome aunt, with other members of two intertwined families and you have a story of love, selfishness, hope and plot-turning surprises. T
he Heiress has humor that lightly taps you on the shoulder and brutal reality that slaps you in the heart.
