Madrigal Theatre Play and Musical Auditions, January 15 - 17, 2013

Calling all University of Texas at Austin students! 

UT's Madrigal Theatre Committee is holding auditions for its two original, student-written productions to debut this spring! For the first time ever, our committee is simultaneously producing an original play and an original musical, and we're looking for performers of all experience levels to cast these exciting new shows! Auditions for both shows will take place across three days in the Student Activity Center on campus. You must be a UT student to audition but do not need to be any particular major.

 


Auditions for the musical Agon:
Tuesday Jan. 15: SAC 1.118, 7-10 p.m.; Wednesday Jan. 16: SAC 1.118, 7-10 p.m.; Thursday Jan. 17: SAC 1.118, 8-11 p.m.

The Madrigal play auditions:
Tuesday Jan. 15: SAC 1.106, 7-10 p.m.; Wednesday Jan. 16: SAC 1.106, 7-10 p.m.; Thursday Jan. 17: SAC 1.106, 7-10 p.m.

Those auditioning for the musical should plan to show up promptly at the beginning of the audition block (7:00pm on Tuesday and Wednesday, 8pm on Thursday) on their selected audition day, prepared to sing 32 bars or 30 seconds to a minute of a song that showcases their voice. Beyond that, auditions for both the play and the musical will consist of cold reads. No monologue necessary.

The musical Agon tells the story of a high school class election that takes place in a dystopian future where nerds have taken control of society. The play has been picked from several exciting submissions, all of which are written by UT students. The Madrigal play will perform April 10 and 11 in the SAC Auditorium. The musical, Agon, performs April 18, 19, 20 in the SAC Auditorium as well.

ABOUT THE PLAY

Simprov is a serious and surreal comedy about technology, entertainment, and identity. Two couples are on contrasting journeys: Barbara and Alan, in middle age, are being pulled apart by her ever-increasing involvement in video and Internet experiences; Actor and Actress, early twenties, are suddenly fired from their TV series and thrown into a world of new technologies and plastic surgery. Their paths will cross in Simprov, a new live version of such video games as The Sims, using real and discardable people. They will meet again when they are unrecognizable even to themselves, before returning to completely altered lives.

NEW WORKS DEVELOPMENT PROJECT 

Simprov is presented as a taped staged reading performance, open to the public. Actors will perform with the script in their hand, simultaneously playing both to a live audience and to a camera. This project is a taped performance of a new play by an esteemed published playwright and is presented as a staged reading for developmental purposes. Make friends with a theater person here in Austin and your Facebook inbox will overflow with invitations. Almost every night of the week plays, fundraisers for plays, solo performance pieces, production parties, script readings and development workshops are happening all over the city in theater venues, clubs, bars and private homes. The same could be said for most major cities in the U.S. with one notable exception: in Austin, a huge number of these events will be new works. Instead of the eightieth revival of Hamlet or another well-worn classic, theater companies here are producing large numbers of plays that they created and wrote themselves.

Caroline Reck, Community Liaison for New Work Austin, explains: “We sometimes have three shows that are all new works opening on the same night instead of three a year... and that's not true most places. It might feel normal here but it's really special.”

DAYBOYNIGHTGIRL is an interdisciplinary adaptation of The Romance of Photogen & Nycteris, a magical tale written by Scottish author George MacDonald in 1882.

This project started with an idea: can we thread three distinct forms together to bring Photogen & Nycteris to the stage. To test our hypothesis, DA! commissioned choreographer Lisa del Rosario, composer Justin Sherburn, and playwright Kirk German. Each artist focused attention on the character of Nycteris ('Night Girl'). Nycteris is part of a mysterious sorcerer's experiment in which she is raised in captivity, never setting foot outside of her chambers or seeing until one evening when she escapes from the castle walls to discover the uncharted world beyond: the wind, the gardens, the night sky.

In April 2011, we hosted our initial work in progress production, inviting community members to dialogue about this first part of Nycteris's story. The audience shared that our integration of forms was not only working, but that they (like us) desired an even greater synthesis.

This month we will again open our process and invite audiences to dialogue, this time about the first part of the Day Boy's story, while also refining and improving upon the work from our initial showing.

Now Taking Play Submissions for the 2012 Season

The Overtime Theater announces a general call for submissions of new full-length plays by Texas writers. Submissions will be considered for the 2012 season. Special consideration will be give to writers living in the greater San Antonio area.

Submission Guidelines:

• We are accepting previously unproduced full-length plays (workshops and readings are OK)
• All genres, styles and content are accepted. The Overtime Theater produces a wide range of scripts including comedies, dramas, and musicals.
• Please include the following with each submission: a bio and/or resume, and a production or development history if applicable.

The deadline for submissions is July 15, 2011. In an effort to be ecologically responsible, the Overtime Theater accepts scripts with all materials (PDF format preferred) in one email to submissions@theovertimetheater.net. Playwrights will be notified regarding the status of their submission no later than September 15, 2011. The Overtime Theater's season will be announced at our annual “Theater For the People” fundraiser on September 24, 2011.
