Upcoming: GO! Grants Showcase, Mark Cohen New Works Festival, University of Texas, September 20

The Executive Committee of the Mark Cohen New Works Festival 2013 and Faculty Producers proudly announce the 2012 Go! Grant showcase alongside the online application launch for the 2013 Cohen New Works Festival! Events are at the Winship Drama Building, University of Texas, from 5 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, September 20.
The Go! Grant Showcase is where artifacts, installations and performances will be presented by undergraduate and graduate student projects that received a small stipend in the form of a Go! Grant this past spring. Each of the eight projects will be featured in various locations on the first floor of the Winship Drama Building.
In preparation for the highly anticipated 2013 Cohen New Works Festival, the Executive Committee will also reveal the online application for the 2013 Festival. A small introductory celebration of new work, the 2013 Kick-Off Event is an opportunity where graduate and undergraduate students are welcome to meet and greet about potential project collaborations, and are also given the opportunity to volunteer for subcommittees within each executive committee.

Students within the Department of Theatre and Dance will be able to pick up their major’s passes at the Kick-Off event, and there will also be FREE FOOD!

The Festival is known for being the largest collegiate event of its kind, producing approximately 30 selections of new work in a variety of mediums and spaces in and around Winship Drama Building and University of Texas campus. The Go! Grant Showcase/2013 New Works Festival Kick-Off event is the official inauguration of the largest celebration of new work in the region: the Cohen New Works Festival presented by the University Co-op!

at the Gloria Delgado Performing Arts Theatre at St. Michael's Catholic Academy, 3000 Barton Creek Blvd., Austin, TX.

TexARTS proudly presents the annual performing arts academy showcase THE BEST OF BROADWAY, a revue featuring the 2011-2012 academy students, on May 20, 2012. Broadway performer Darren Gibson directs this year’s production which spotlights the talents of the students enrolled in TexARTS’ Acting, Voice, Ballet and Dance programs. This original showcase features a variety of dance styles and music ranging from classic Broadway to contemporary pop favorites.

“It is a thrill to watch our academy students grow into young artists”, said TexARTS Producing Artistic Director Robert Armitage. “We are excited to share their talents and to give them the opportunity to showcase their hard work.”

THE BEST OF BROADWAY will offer three performances on Sunday, May 20, 2012 at Noon, 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. at The Gloria Delgado Performing Arts Theatre at St. Michael's Catholic Academy located at 3000 Barton Creek Blvd. in Austin. Tickets for the general public are $10.00.

TexARTS is a non-profit organization that offers year-round classes in acting, voice, ballet and dance as well as completely staged youth and professional productions. TexARTS’ mission is to cultivate a thriving arts community by exposing all people to the visual and performing arts. The TexARTS faculty, who has earned 21 Broadway credits among them, strives to prepare and promote exceptional young talent. This annual performance of collaborative invention and experimentation showcases the talents of students and faculty from the Butler School of Music and Department of Theatre and Dance. The performances are free and open to the public.

Accumulation Formal by Ellen Bartel
Combining movement and contemporary acoustic chamber music, ten dancers and five musicians take the stage and reveal a dynamic connection to humanity.

Dervish by Aly DelCueto
Inspired by the idea of whirling dervish, one that possesses abundant/frenzied energy, DelCueto’s work is an exploration of feminine power, combat, strength, survival, exhaustion, struggle, and athleticism.

10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 by Angela Falcone
A discovery about the number of ways one can find his/her “zero.”

Untitled by Courtney Mazeika and Cooper Neely
An examination of the balance between opposition, synchronization, and experiences that one can or cannot control.

Is there a connection between the seismic activity of earthquakes and the electrical activity in the brain in gran mal seizures? This piece explores the personal experience of watching a loved one having a seizures and the seismic activity of the brain.

Questionable Conclusions by Chelsea Pierce
An investigation of an endless search for something that seemed clear, but is quickly lost and distant; something that fizzles unknowingly, or abruptly comes to life again.

A peek into the complexities of human life and how the network can be broken down to reveal something more primal.

Testing the question of “How far can you manipulate something until it begins to lose its original purpose?”, Taylor delves into the limits of form and how far it can be changed while retaining its earliest idea.

Upcoming: Choregraphers' Showcase, Austin Community College, December 2 and 3

The Austin Community College District’s Dance Department will present the fall 2011 Choreographers’ Showcase Friday, December 2, and Saturday, December 3. The performances will take place at 8 p.m. in the Mainstage Theater at Rio Grande Campus (1212 Rio Grande St.) (click for map).

The event will feature 28 students performing 12 new dance works, choreographed by faculty members Darla Johnson and Catherine Solaas as well as students enrolled in DANC 1212 (Practicum/Principles of Choreography).

Proceeds from the Choreographers’ Showcase will benefit the drama and dance scholarship fund. Suggested donations are $10 for the general public and $5 for students and seniors.

Secrets of the Stage

A step onto the brightly lit stage of the Oscar G. Brockett Theatre is a step behind the scenes of the University’s Department of Theatre and Dance.

This week, senior undergraduate and graduate students reveal the secrets of their trades at the annual Theatre Design & Technology Spring Showcase.

The UT and Austin communities will have the opportunity to peruse the portfolios of students in programs including scenic design, lighting, costume and costume technology, and scene and theatrical design. A small sea of booths, one representing each student, provide snapshots and detailed glimpses into the artistry and effort behind previous productions from November’s “Fight” to February’s “The Threepenny Opera.” Some even provide sneak peeks of set and costume design for upcoming productions — namely, “Love’s Labour’s Lost,” an early Shakespearean comedy that will premiere April 2011.

In a corner of the upper steps of the stage, costumes hang on a rack as they would in a clothing store, and painstakingly detailed masks and bright swatches of fabric are set up across the length of a table. Several framed chalkboards encourage passers by to touch the work on display, leave messages on the boards and speak to the student who crafted it all.

The student in question is Carl Booker, a theatrical design student who will graduate from the Master’s program this year. He believes in gaining an understanding of the draping and design processes through interactivity.
