Broadway Stars Set for TexARTS' Summer Programs, June 10 - August 16, 2013

Darcie Roberts, TexARTS Thoroughly Modern Millie Logowho played the title role in the U.S. first national tour of "Thoroughly Modern Millie," will serve as one of the professional guest teaching artists for the TexARTS summer musical theatre intensive, "Thoroughly Modern Millie" (June 10 – 30). Students enrolled in this three-week, production-based intensive will rehearse while receiving instruction in acting, dance and voice from a team of professional instructors and special Broadway guests. Rehearsals culminate in a public performance on June 29-30.

A legitimate triple-threat, Roberts made her Broadway debut at the age of 19 in "Crazy for You." Since then she has appeared in such Broadway hits as "Aida," "Dream," and "Curtains." Roberts joins Chris Freeman (Broadway’s “The Lion King,” “La Cage Aux Folles,” “The Boy from Oz,” and “Swan Lake”), Keenah Armitage (Broadway's "On The Town"), Darren Gibson (Broadway's "Movin' Out) and previously announced guest teaching artist Robby Armitage. Armitage, who is an eight-time Broadway veteran, performed in the Broadway production of “Millie.” Armitage currently serves as the TexARTS producing artistic director.

Darcie Roberts

“Arts education has proven to have such a positive impact on the development of a child. These programs help to build self-esteem and confidence in young people,” said Armitage. “For area young people this is a terrific opportunity to learn new skills, meet new friends, and train with professional theater artists.”

TexARTS' popular series of youth summer performing arts camps will offer a variety of programming for children and teens of all levels. This year’s lineup includes “Great Shakes,” a Shakespeare acting intensive, a youth ballet intensive and a dance technique intensive

Students may also enroll in full-day or half-day camps that focus on such popular titles as “Wicked,” “Grease” and “Glee.” These week-long camps are under the guidance of experienced professionals and will focus on basic vocal technique, acting skills, dance and musical theatre.

In addition, Kelleen Adams will lead the visual arts camps for students ages 5-12. For students ages 2 – 5, TexARTS will host mini camps. Each session has a theme with crafts and an informal presentation for family and friends.

Camps begin June 10 and run through August 16. Camps will be held at TexARTS in the Erin Doherty Studios (2300 Lohmans Spur, Suite #160, Lakeway, TX). For more information or to register for TexARTS upcoming performing and visual arts summer camps, please visit www.tex-arts.org or call 512-852-9079 x104.

Youth Auditions for Annie, Get Your Gun, Theatre at the J, March 19, 2013

Theatre at the J Austin TXTheater at the J announces AUDITIONS for the JCC’s Annual Musical Theatre Workshop Production (for ages 5-18), Irving Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun directed by Theater at the J Artistic Director Adam Roberts.

For nearly a decade, Theater at the J's summer youth musical has been a mainstay on the JCC campus. Since then-Director of Cultural Arts Crystal Connally was inspired to mount Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with an all-youth cast in 2004, Theater at the J has presented a total of twelve subsequent youth productions, including You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown (2005), A Year with Frog and Toad (2006), Seussical (2007), Singin' in the Rain (2008), Cinderella and Into the Woods (2009), Crazy for You and Honk! (2010), Children of Eden and Once Upon a Mattress (2011), and Peter Pan and The Wind in the Willows (2012). The tradition continues in 2013 with Theater at the J's exciting production of Irving Berlin's Annie Get Your Gun.

This musical tribute to the famed Annie Oakley (featuring such notable Berlin tunes as "Anything You Can Do (I Can Do Better)" and "There's No Business Like Show Business") will be performed by a rip-roarin' cast of kids aged 5-18. During the course of a four-week workshop culminating in a full week of performances, students learn about the art of theater through both its practice in production and by taking part in technique classes taught by highly respected instructors of voice, dance and acting.

Theater at the J strives to simulate a professional experience for its young performers, with each youth production featuring set, costume and lighting design by acclaimed professionals, in addition to professional stage management, direction, and choreography. It's an experience that keeps kids coming back year after year, with several Musical Theater Workshop alumni having performed in upwards of five summers' worth of productions.

Theater at the J's 2013 Musical Theater Workshop will take place from June 23rd-July 17th, with performances running from July 18th-25th on the JCC Community Hall Stage.

Auditions are open to all students aged 5-18 and will take place on Tuesday, March 19th at 6:30 pm. AUDITIONS forSummer Youth Theatre 2011

The Physicists

May 23-June 4, 2011 by application and appointment

The VORTEX, 2307 Manor Road (click for map) Bus route. Free Parking.

VORTEX Repertory Company is seeking students ages 13-17 to participate in Summer Youth Theatre 2011 (SYT). Now in its 20th Year, the award-winning SYT program rehearses evenings and weekends in June and July and is tuition-free. SYT encourages diversity. Students of any ethnicity or heritage, students with disabilities or economic challenges, and students of all experience levels are welcome.

This summer, SYT presents The Physicists, a dark comedy written in 1961 by Swiss playwright Friedrich Dürrenmatt. Three mad scientists--Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and Johann Wilhelm Möbius--hold court in an insane asylum atop the Swiss Alps. As nurses begin turning up dead, a police inspector and a venerated psychiatrist join forces to find the cause. Is it the ghost of King Solomon? Is it Möbius's revolutionary theory, the Principle of Universal Discovery? Or is it the simple truth that what has been thought can never be unthought? Written under the threat of nuclear war and now produced in the wake of the Fukushima disaster, The Physicists provides an opportunity for the students of SYT to tackle science, politics, and ethics while telling a story that will make audiences laugh out loud before it chills them to the bone.

SYT 2011 provides students with experiences in all aspects of theatre including acting, technical theatre, and publicity. Rehearsals and workshops are free to all participants. The rehearsals culminate in a full production of a play presented to the public over two weekends. Rehearsals are in the evenings with a few weekend day commitments.

Prior to the audition/interview, students must fill out a short application and prepare a memorized, one-minute piece of text from a play, poem, or song. A parent or guardian is also required to attend the interview.

The Physicists is directed by Rudy Ramirez, VORTEX Repertory Company director, actor, and performance artist. Mr. Ramirez is currently directing VORTEX’s production of LEAR, opening May 20. He has directed numerous other projects including Wheels of Wonderland for the Austin Bike Zoo and Trey Deason’s play, Cardigan. His one-man shows and writing have received accolades around town. He is receiving his MA from the University of Texas in Performance as Public Practice and additionally holds a BA from the University of Pennsylvania.

Summer Youth Theatre is funded in part by VORTEX Repertory Company, the City of Austin under the auspices of the Austin Arts Commission, and the Texas Commission on the Arts.
