For three {hundred thousand} years now the Pig Pile has squirmed and squealed its way across a vast landscape of deep associations and histories between seemingly unrelated objects. The closer we get to the complicated, complicated porcine truth of what it means to be human, the more our numbers have dwindled, to where we now begin to fear we are on the brink of extinction. Only you can help us to piece these pieces together so that we may know what we have learned, before it’s too late. Note: If you have any wooden items that you wish to be preserved for all eternity, you may please to bring them with you to the occasion.

This is a collaboration between Austin-based theater companies Rude Mechs and Salvage Vanguard Theater, and a New Dramatists resident playwright. The group has gathered four times a year for three years in a chaotic work format known as a Pig Pile, with little discernible leadership or centralized structure - neither of narrative nor of process – and has assembled an unwieldy and highly associative collection of seemingly unrelated imagery, geography and aromas, that over time and layers of work has revealed an emerging, intimately connected web of enfolded and implicate mythology.

This project is one of five institutional New Dramatists/Full Stage USA Commissions for new work at an eclectic mix of producing organizations across the country. The Full Stage USA initiative, conceived by New Dramatists and underwritten by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, addresses the field-critical issues of new works “stalling” in development with no resulting full production and the special challenge of securing subsequent productions after a world premiere. Each partnership provides a $25,000 commission to a writer; supports two years of enhanced writer-driven development in New Dramatists’ Playwrights Lab; and culminates in the full production staged by the partner theater.

At a large, tastefully appointed townhouse, the Deputy Mayor of New York has just shot himself. Though only a flesh wound, four couples are about to experience a severe attack of Farce. Gathering for their tenth wedding anniversary, the host lies bleeding in the other room and his wife is nowhere in sight. His lawyer, Ken and wife Chris must get "the story" straight before the other guests arrive. As the confusions and mis-communications mount, the evening spins off into classic farcical hilarity.

NATIONAL PASTIME takes place in Baker City, Iowa in 1933. As the country is coming out of the Great Depression, about the only business in Baker City that seems to be holding on (barely) is the radio station WZBQ. The last time they had made any kind of profit was before the Depression... when the team was home to the minor league baseball team, the Baker City Cougars. In order to save the station, the owners decide to broadcast Cougar baseball again... only there's no team to broadcast!
What do you do when decide to broadcast baseball without a team? Broadcast fake games of course! Incredibly, the entire scheme works and the station is rolling in the profits once again. All is well until a reporter from Life Magazine arrives to do a story on the incredible Iowa baseball team.

TexARTS Association for the Performing and Visual Arts welcomes the community to an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 17, 2013. The celebration will kick off the 2013-2014 Academy year.
In addition to getting first chance at registering for the upcoming fall classes, attendees can also participate in free dance and visual arts classes; meet the TexARTS instructors - many of whom are Broadway veterans and serve on the faculty of nationally recognized Texas State University musical theatre program; watch selected performances from recent TexARTS productions; enjoy refreshments; and win tickets to upcoming shows.

TexARTS upcoming season includes: “Holiday Extravaganza” (Dec. 7-8), “The Nutcracker” (Dec. 14-15), Disney’s “The Jungle Book” (Jan. 11-19) and the Elvis Presley jukebox musical “All Shook Up” (Feb. 1-9).

In Timothy Braun's fantastical re-interpretation, five characters from Chekhov's 1901 masterpiece live highly circumscribed lives in a small town somewhere in present-day America. Breaking String presented an early draft at Hyde Park Theatre in December of 2012, and recruited an elite creative team comprising veterans of Austin's new works community, for a development process. The result is a highly playful and theatrical piece in which Mr. Braun explores themes central to Chekhov's work: loneliness, the yearning for a better life, and the struggle to connect.

Reefer Madness is a musical satire of the 1936 cult film classic Reefer Madness that opened in Los Angeles in 1998. The book and lyrics were written by Kevin Murphy and the music by Dan Studney. Directed by Andy Fickman, it was initially shown at the Hudson Theater on Santa Monica Boulevard in Los Angeles and then moved to the New York "Off-Broadway" scene. The show opened Off Broadway on September 15, 2001, and closed shortly thereafter. 

ABOUT DOCTUH MISTUH PRODUCTIONS DM Productions made its debut on the Austin Theatre scene in October 2009 with its hit, EVIL DEAD, THE MUSICAL (nominated by the Austin Critics’ Table for Outstanding Production of a Musical). The group has since produced two more productions, COMPANY (a benefit for the Breast Cancer Resource Center) and last summer’s BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON (recipient of three B. Iden Payne Awards). Doctuh Mistuh Productions mission is to produce Off-Broadway works with an edge and landmark musicals which may be unfamiliar to Austin audiences.

The season closes with Little Shop of Horrors, the other-worldly musical satirization of sci-fi, b-grade movies set to “a gleeful 1960’s- pastiche score.” (New York Times) Seymour, a down-and out skid row floral assistant becomes an overnight sensation when he discovers an exotic plant with a mysterious craving for fresh blood. Soon “Audrey II” grows into an ill-tempered, foul-mouthed, R&B-singing carnivore who offers him fame and fortune in exchange for feeding its growing appetite. In the Vex version, Audrey II comes alive as a seductive woman amidst the crooning sounds of rock-n-roll, doo-wop, and mo-town in May/June 2013.

Two Gentlemen of Verona deals with the somewhat foolish behavior of people in love and the challenges friends face when they fall for the same person. The play features one of Shakespeare’s most beloved comedic duos, Launce and Crab the dog. To bring the role of Crab to life, S4N Theater teamed up with Austin Dog Rescue to feature a different, adoptable dog each weekend.

“Something for Nothing Theater discovers its performances through the creative act of play,” said Artistic Director Chelsea Bunn, “and Two Gentlemen of Verona gives us a lot to work with: two clowns, original music, disguised identity, outlaws, a dog. It’s a real comic smorgasbord that is sure to delight the young and young-at-heart.”
