This good-natured comedy from Richard Harris chronicles several months in the life of a beginning tap class in Austin, TX. Each of the eight students, who come from a variety of backgrounds, has his or her own reason for joining. Whatever the cause, they make a point of coming every week to chat, relax and, if they can manage to, learn a couple of steps.

Led by Mavis, their eternally patient instructor, and accompanied by the pianist Fraser, the students (who range from hopeless to competent) strive to master the basics of tap. But the steps and routines are just the background for the real focus of the play — the relationships and interactions of these ten very different people. By their final performance, not only have the class members developed some degree of skill, but they have also overcome the inhibitions, awkwardness and personality conflicts that have kept them out of sync.

Un-named Theatre Project Georgetown TX

announces its 2012-2013 season of dinner theatre at Burger University in downtown Georgetown beginning with

October 18 - 20 in Georgetown

The Un-Named Theatre Project, Austin’s newest theatre venture, founded by Austin theatre veterans Olin Meadows, Cathie Sheridan, Matthew Charles Burnett and many others, is pleased to announce the inaugural season of the Georgetown Dinner Theatre. The Georgetown Dinner Theatre will be an interactive dining and entertainment experience, which the greater Austin area has been missing for quite some time. Being held in the historic Lockett building on the Georgetown “Square”, the building sets the mood from the moment patrons walk in the door then comes the scrumptious meal provided by Chef Alan Grimsley of Burger University, followed by the top notch theatre produced by the Un-Named Theatre Project and their talented actors.

The Un-Named Theatre Project, heralded by Artistic Director Olin Meadows, is producing a full season of plays and musical performances that will please everyone. Opening the Inaugural Season, celebrating its 25th anniversary is the modern classic Steel Magnolias written by Robert Harling. Steel Magnolias is directed by Olin Meadows who directed the show in early 2011 to a sold out run, and Austin favorite Matthew Charles Burnett (Cabaret, The Producers, Into the Woods, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels). Adding to the cast and crew is returning actresses Cathie Sheridan, Cici Barone, Megan Henderson and Joan Baker, with Trina Sherman and Mary Kennelly joining to round out the cast.

Following Steel Magnolias, The Un-Named Theatre Project will be producing a Christmas Musical Revue, and starting out 2013 will be The Trip to Bountiful by Horton Foote, followed by The World Goes Round which features the music of Kander and Ebb, then closing out the season is The Oldest Profession, a racy adult comedy about turning a buck in a rough economy. Plan to be thrilled and excited by the new and exciting season of theatre that The Un-Named Theatre Project has planned, and be prepared for some exciting surprise events as well.

Tickets for the Un-Named Theatre Project‘s presentations of The Georgetown Dinner Theatre will be $30.00 which includes both the Dinner and the Performance. Mid-Life! The Crisis Musical, Tex-Arts, Lakeway, February 10 - 26

Mid-Life the crisis musical Tex-Arts Lakeway TX

By Catherine Dribb

Mid-Life!, the Crisis Musical, presented by TexArts for only one more weekend, is a funny, witty piece about colorful characters and the crises they face. Brothers Bob and Jim Walton wrote book, music, and lyrics for this musical review with no plot other than scenes of the characters as they progress (and digress) through their mid-lives. Mid-Life! features six outstanding cast members directed by Lenny Daniel, bringing talent to Lakeway from Dripping Springs, Austin and Georgetown! If you’re able to make the scenic drive west, it’s a performance worth the trip.

Mid-Life! covers the range of emotions and crises associated with the often dreaded mid-life years -- a 37-year-old ticking time bomb looking for the perfect sperm; a 40-year-old man exhibiting Tourette’s syndrome outbursts of his father’s idioms; and a man and woman who decide turning the big five-oh isn’t so oh, oh, all that bad.

The creatively designed set is filled with stuff we’ve acquired in our lives. Mid-Life! is smoothly staged as characters come in and out of scenes carrying small props or rearranging the set items already there.

The six performers play different characters in different marriages, divorces, jobs and homes. Most of the show is comic: three women at their 30-year high school reunion discussing their divorces, for example, or the three men exaggerating their skilz on the bball court [sic] only to cut their recreation time short because wives are telephoning. From softly spoken I love yous to blatant I’ve-traded-you-for-a-younger-model announcements, Mid-Life! pokes fun at those who stay married, those who abandon marriage, and those whose marriage spawned that damn kid who just won’t leave home.

It isn’t all just fun and games. Coming out of the closet and mammogram tests aren’t all sparkles and flashing lights (though they are in this show!). In the finale a trio gently addresses the distressing responsibilities of parenting their own parents. After scenes that elicit laughs, gasps and did-they-really-just-go-there?, it’s a tender moment for the audience and actors.

That tenderness didn’t come any too soon, either. While it’s clever and funny, Mid-Life! can be hard to stomach at times, let alone watch. But at least both genders get what’s coming to them. Women in the audience had to watch the characters mock menopause and mammograms while men got to suffer through a song about that dreaded trip to the doctor that’s complete only after the rubber-gloved prostate exam.

Songs about such sensitive subjects were bearable, thanks to a strong cast. Special accolades go to Jarret Mallon and Amy Nichols. When all six performers sang together onstage, the overall blend wasn’t remarkable, but their individual performances in solos, trios and small ensembles were superb.

You will, indeed, laugh out loud at TexArts’ production in Lakeway of Mid-Life!, the Crisis musical featuring Kirk Kelso, Jarret Mallon, Melita McAtee, Amy Nichols, Rudy Roberson and Cathie Sheridan. It runs through February 26. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door.

Steel Magnolias, Sam Bass Community Theatre, Round Rock, January 27 - February 19

Steel Magnolias Sam Bass Community Theatre

At one point in Robert Harling's mischievous script for Steel Magnolias, set in Truvy's beauty shop in Chinquapin, Louisiana, tidily turned out Clairee Beltcher responds when the newly hired perm-and-trim assistant Annelle worries that one of the husbands might intrude into that women's world. "Oh, those men wouldn't ever come in here," she says. "They're afraid that we might be running around nekkid or something."

Harling's 1987 play and the 1989 film of succeed exactly because of that. These simple, charming women are sweet and frank with one another, emotionally naked and not the least ashamed of it.

Steel Magnolias, Sam Bass Community Theatre

Steel Magnolias is a story with a powerful attraction, one that transcends the merely "chick flic" aspect of it. It's a story of friendship and binding over the long term. No wonder that this play is so frequently produced in community theatre. I first saw it at Way Off Broadway Community Players in Leander in January 2009, then again a few months later at the Trinity Street Players of First Baptist Church. I was out of town when the City Theatre did it this past December. Sam Bass has this appealing production running until February 19, the Renaissance Guild in San Antonio stages an African-American edition for three weekends starting on Friday, February 4, and the Hill Country Community Theatre near Marble Falls holds auditions late this month for an April production.

It's popular with audiences because they know the story and they can't resist the story of the fragile young Shelby surrounded by those funny and affectionate older women. Almost everyone loves a good cry -- 'cepting maybe the caricatured Louisiana men who never look inside the beauty shop.

Muses IV, Vestige Group at a private residence in 78704, August 29 - September 12

Muses IV Vestige group

The Vestige Group's annual Muses performance in a private residence is a fun evening outing. It's a bit like supervised trick or treating, except that the ten encounters for your group of fewer than a dozen take place on the same property. And you're not in disguise; the actors are.

The experience is designed for about 30 persons each night. We gathered on that big old porch for check-in as the evening shadows were gathering. Refreshments were available for a donation and mosquito spray was available for free. Susie Gidseg and companions divided us into three groups and accompanied to us to different starting points on the circuit. The webmaster of TheatreAustin at Yahoo groups decided that ours with Susie would be the "banshees" (cf. Siouxsie and the same, the British rock group, fl. 1976-1988).

Christian Huey as Winston, Jen Brown as Denise (www.vestigegroup.org)In previous years the collection of scriptwriters absorbed the vibes of the chosen house and let their imaginations run free. This year, experimenting with more structure, Vestige organizers gave the eight writers a family, ready-made, and asked for ten scenes to illustrate their lives. As in previous years, the scenes were sharp, well acted and complete in themselves.

What you don't know as you're going into the experience is that you are going to see some of the same characters embodied by different actors. The banshees went through the scenes in the order listed in the program. Not until a ten-minute break after scene four, necessary for traffic flow, did we study out the fact that in the first three vignettes we had viewed Denise the tippling therapist portrayed in turn, over the lapse of more than a year and in reverse chronological order, by Cathie Sheridan, Jen Brown and Kimberley Mead -- actresses of different shapes, styles and appearances.

Man of La Mancha, Georgetown Palace, October 2 - November 1

The Georgetown Palace production of Man of La Mancha starts out moody, atmospheric and harsh, and it comes surging beautifully through that dark, difficult second act.

The Inquisition is awaiting in the darkness above, and Cervantes is storytelling to save his life and possessions from the thieves and murderers who surround him. In Cervantes' fantastical tale of the deranged Alonso Quijana, that Knight of the Woeful Countenance has lost it. The knight's beloved Dulcinea--Aldonza the prostitute and scullery maid--has been gang raped, and he doesn't know it.

Dulcinea curses Quijana for his foolishness and his misguided belief that life contains any hope at all.

Then, in the filth and stink both of the prison before us and of the misadventures of his quest, Joe Penrod as Cervantes/Quijana/Quijote replies with The Impossible Dream:

To dream the impossible dream;
To fight the unbeatable foe;
To bear with unbearable sorrow,
To run where the brave dare not go.

To right the unrightable wrong;
To be better far than you are;
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star . . . .

It's an exalting and inspired moment, one that squeezes the heart and puts into you the dizzy hope of beauty, meaning and peace.

Man of La Mancha

Georgetown Palace Theatre
October 2 - November 1

The Palace Theatre in Historic Georgetown invites you to “Dream the Impossible Dream” as they open the musical Man of La Mancha on Friday, October 2nd, for a five-weekend run. In this quest for adventure and music the storyteller Cervantes portrays the ultimate Knight Errant, Don Quixote!

Written by Dale Wasserman, Mitch Leigh, and Joe Darian and directed by Ron Watson, Man of La Mancha is generously sponsored by James Avery.

The wild winds of fortune have swept Cervantes into the Spanish Inquisition where he sits in jail awaiting trial. There he entertains his fellow prisoners as Don Quixote with tales of chivalry and battles with evil (and windmills). We meet his sidekick Sancho and the serving girl, Aldonza, whom Don Quixote imagines is the beautiful Lady Dulcinea. Both the prisoners and the audience will be deeply affected by the sweeping story and the soaring music of this timeless tale of adventure and love in unexpected places.
