This good-natured comedy from Richard Harris chronicles several months in the life of a beginning tap class in Austin, TX. Each of the eight students, who come from a variety of backgrounds, has his or her own reason for joining. Whatever the cause, they make a point of coming every week to chat, relax and, if they can manage to, learn a couple of steps.

Led by Mavis, their eternally patient instructor, and accompanied by the pianist Fraser, the students (who range from hopeless to competent) strive to master the basics of tap. But the steps and routines are just the background for the real focus of the play — the relationships and interactions of these ten very different people. By their final performance, not only have the class members developed some degree of skill, but they have also overcome the inhibitions, awkwardness and personality conflicts that have kept them out of sync.

CAST:
Danny Herman (Director)
Maureen Klein Slabaugh (Assistant Director)

A Christmas Carol, the Musical auditions

The Georgetown Palace Theatre announces auditions for A Christmas Carol, The Musical directed by Cliff Butler and choreographed by Danny Herman and Rocker Verastique. All auditions will at Georgetown Palace Theater at 810 S. Austin Ave in Georgetown.

Charles Dickens' classic gets the full Broadway treatment by the Broadway team of Alan Menken ("Beauty and the Beast," "Little Mermaid,"), Lynn Ahrens ("Ragtime," "Seussical") and Mike Okrent ("Crazy For You," "Me and My Girl.")
Called by The New York Times "a tonic for adults, and for children a transfixing journey," this spectacular musical extravaganza ran for ten years at Madison Square Garden. This version of "A Christmas Carol" timelessly retains its emotional power and pure joy, thanks to the marvelously-told story by Ockrent and Ahrens, and the Menken/Ahrens score filled with beautiful melodies and emotional lyrics. In fact, their song "A Place Called Home" has become a holiday standard.

SINGING AUDITIONS will be held Saturday, Sep 10th from 2-5 pm and Sunday, Sep 11th from 2-5pm. Auditioners are asked to sing a memorized song, no longer than 1min in length. Piano accompaniment will be provided, or you may bring your own accompaniment on a CD. No singing a cappella please. Please sing only 36-48 measures of a song to include the money note. No monologues. Children ages 7-12 yrs old do not need to prepare a song. They will be taught a piece at the audition.

All
DANCING AUDITIONS will be held on Monday, Sep 12th. General dance call-backs will be from 7-8:30pm. Advanced dance call-backs and anyone who is auditioning to be a dancer only, will need to be at the Palace at 8:30pm to learn the dance combinations and perform them in small groups for the audition team. Auditioners are asked to wear comfortable clothes for dancing.

Footloose, Zilker Productions at Sheffield Hillside Theatre, Zilker Park, July 8 - August 13

Footloose Zilker Productions Austin Texas

by Michael Meigs

I attended Zilker Theatre Production's Footloose ten days ago on opening weekend, and I'm only just now writing it up. They've got a nice long run -- six weeks, four night a week -- and an Austin tradition of celebrating the summer that stretches back 53 years. Judging from the full parking lot and the large, cheerful crowd lounging on the slope above the Hillside Theatre, Zilker Productions doesn't need much help in selling the production, either. Except for the modest $3 parking fee that probably serves to renovate the Zilker lawn after the summer, the price is zero, nada, free admission for summer theatre entertainment of good quality under the moon and stars.

After all, in classic economic theory, as the price of a good approaches zero, demand approaches infinity. If you were really determined to do so, you could attend this show for nothing at all -- bicycling or walking in and not budging at the intermission when the energetic young cast bounds out to seek donations (suggested: $10 per blanket).

Plus, they will get their reviews. For last year's production of The Music Man, both Elizabeth Cobbe of the Austin Chronicle and Clare Carnavan of the Statesman wrote up the production about halfway through the run.

Male lead Andrew Cannata with his confident tenor, sure dancing and leading boy presence has an admiring following in Austin and will become even better known with this show. He and the core cast of teens rock and clown it up with the showy choreography of Danny Herman and Rocker Verastique. The live band led by Susan Finnigan rocks it out through the muscular sound system, initially from backstage and then later at stage center.
