Auditions for Princess Ida, Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Austin, March 2 - 3, 2013

The Austin Gilbert and Sullivan Society announces Auditions for Princess Ida Saturday, March 2 and Sunday, March 3, 2013 by appointment only.
The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Austin announces auditions for its June 13-23 Grand Summer Production of Princess Ida by W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. Ralph MacPhail, Jr. and Jeffrey Jones-Ragona will be returning as artistic and music directors, respectively.


Auditions are approximately ten minutes long, by appointment only. All roles are open for casting, including principals and chorus. A prepared musical selection and completed audition form are required. A résumé and headshot are requested. A small honorarium will be paid to all performers. Auditions will be held at Genesis Presbyterian Church, 1507 Wilshire Blvd (click for map).

Those auditioning should memorize a song from Gilbert and Sullivan or something similar that will show their voice and range to best advantage. An accompanist will be provided, although singers may bring their own pianist if they wish. Please note that unaccompanied (a cappella) auditions are not accepted, nor are self-accompanied auditions. A public domain version of the Vocal Score and Libretto are available.

Princess Ida, or Castle Adamant was Arthur Sullivan and W.S. Gilbert’s eighth comic opera out of fourteen. The Society is producing it for the first time in its history. Sullivan’s score is majestic, and many consider Gilbert’s libretto one of his funniest. This is the only three-act Gilbert and Sullivan opera.

This melodic and hilarious comic opera features proto-feminist Princess Ida, the daughter of King Gama. The princess founds a women’s university from which all men are barred, and she and her faculty teach that women are superior to men and should rule in their stead. Romantic Prince Hilarion, to whom Ida had been engaged in infancy, sneaks into the university along with two friends with the aim of claiming Hilarion’s bride, instigating a riotous war between the sexes. Princess Ida satirizes feminism, women’s education, masculine pugnacity and militarism, grand opera, and Darwinian evolution - topics which were controversial in conservative Victorian England. It is based on a narrative poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson called “The Princess.”

The classic and favorite operetta, "H.M.S. Pinafore" is performed by the UTSA Lyric Theatre and UTSA Orchestra. The story of forbidden love between the classes gets a maritime flavor as the whimsical lyrics penned by W. S. Gilbert set to the music of Arthur Sullivan continue to delight audiences. Set aboard the British ship H.M.S. Pinafore, we discover Ralph Rackstraw (a lowly sailor) has feelings for Josephine, daughter of Captain Corcoran. However, her father has his intentions on her marrying Sir Joseph Porter, the First Lord of the Admiralty. Knowing her place, Josephine keeps to her father's wishes, but declares her love after hearing Sir Joseph speak to the need for equality among the human race. Will they carry out their plans to marry? Or will some deep dark secret known only to Little Buttercup be revealed to change many a life aboard the "H.M.S. Pinafore"? Come see for yourself.

The students of the UTSA Lyric Theatre and Orchestra perform in the classic Gilbert & Sullivan operetta, "H.M.S. Pinafore". The operetta's underlying theme of love between different classes was the fourth collaboration between Gilbert & Sullivan and one of the most popular from the duo. As the opera begins, the H.M.S. Pinafore is docked at Portsmouth. The able-bodied crew are lively as they sing and prepare for the arrival of Sir Joseph Porter, First Lord Admiral. In the midst of the camaraderie, Ralph Rackstraw declares his love for Captain Corcoran's daughter, Josephine-- whose hand in marriage is sought by Sir Joseph, but Ralph is dissuaded by his fellow shipmate, Dick Deadeye that the love is forbidden and will not come to pass. In a similar fashion, Little Buttercup, a Portsmouth woman who sells supplies and sundries to the sailors, professes her love to the captain. Her love goes unrequited, but she leaves him with a foreboding, "things are seldom what they seem". So goes this tale of star-crossed lovers until a secret is revealed.

Patience played to a full house, including all the children who arrived early for a special program and remained for the entire matinee performance yesterday, just as entranced as the rest of us.

H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, and The Mikado seem to be the most frequently performed masterpieces, but, thanks to our very own Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Austin, we are privileged to enjoy every gem and delight in the Gilbert and Sullivan repertory.

Sparkling in the intimate new performance setting of the arts center of Brentwood Christian School (map), which seats 400 and boasts an orchestra pit that conceals the professional-quality 15-piece orchestra, Patience is a complete theatrical experience. The 22-voice chorus (11 men, 11 women) sang with a snappy vigor and the clarity that made the supertitles showcasing the lyrics really unnecessary.

Every principal singer shone, and the audience welcomed the return of comic and musical stalwarts Arthur Di Bianca, Holton Johnson, Jeanette Jones, and Russell Gregory. Meredith Ruduski, as Patience the dairy maid herself, was a fine lyric and comic presence.

Everyone associated with this production should be very proud. A lot of the stage business and choreography was quite demanding. The audience laughed everywhere it was supposed to and nowhere it was not.

Just five performances remain: Thursday, 14 June, at 8 pm; Friday, 15 June, at 8 pm; Saturday, 16 June, at 3 pm and at 8 pm; and Sunday, 17 June, at 3 pm. For ticket information, call 474-5664; advance prices are $20 for adults ($25 at the door), $15 for students over 18 with identification ($20 at the door), and $7 for those 18 and under ($10 at the door).

Do not deprive yourself. If you love music or theater or both, treat yourself to Patience.

Who said pirates were scary? Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance brings to life the most lovable swashbuckling, free spirited, crazy troop of pirates that you have ever seen.

On his 21st birthday the young pirate apprentice Frederic has completed his duty of servitude to his fellow Pirates. He must leave the pirates who have raised him and venture out to the world and become his own person, experience new things and meet new people. The young , beautiful Mabel instantly catches his eye. As always, obstacles threaten to cause trouble for young Frederic. It turns out that Frederic was born during the leap year which means even though he is 21 he has only had 5 birthdays and he must remain a pirate’s apprentice until his 21st birthday. Along the way a bunch of crazy characters like the Major General Stanely and the Sargeant of police weave their way in to the story causing all kinds of hysterical chaos that will leave your students laughing in the aisles. Of course, a happy ending is in the cards for our young hero!

The Mikado opened in London on March 14, 1885, and ran for a record-breaking 672 performances at the Savoy Theatre. This comedy about an executioner, while set in Japan, displays wit that is very much British, albeit kimono-clad. Victorian England is the target of Gilbert's satire, thinly disguised as a strange and distant land. The Mikado has had an extensive influence on popular culture, from “Pooh-Bah,” “Tit-Willow," “A Wand’ring Minstrel I” and “Three Little Maids” to the 1999 Mike Leigh film “Topsy-Turvy,” which tells the story of the creation of The Mikado.

Artistic Director Ralph MacPhail, Jr. returns for his 11^th summer with the Society, along with Jeffrey Jones-Ragona, enjoying his 15^th season as Music Director.

The cast includes Holton Johnson (Nanki-Poo), Tamsen Cohagan (Yum-Yum), Russell Gregory (The Mikado), Janette Jones (Katisha), Arthur DiBianca (Ko-Ko), Patricia Combs (Pitti-Sing), Robert L. Schneider (Pooh-Bah), Angela Irving (Peep-Bo), Jay Young (Pish-Tush), and a Chorus of 24 Noblemen and School-Girls.

A free Opening Night Gala with refreshments follows the Friday, June 10 performance. Special Children's Activities precede the performance on June 12 at 2 p.m. All performances will have supertitles.

Usually regarded as Gilbert & Sullivan's masterpiece, The Mikado has been translated into other languages and adapted more than any other of their works. The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Austin will continue its tradition of offering The Mikado that Gilbert and Sullivan wrote, demonstrating why the work has proved so enduring and endearing for 125 years.

In The Pirates of Penzance, Frederic was as a child apprenticed to a band of tenderhearted, orphaned pirates by his nurse who, being hard of hearing, had mistaken her master's instructions to apprentice the boy to a pilot. Frederic, upon completing his 21st year, rejoices that he has fulfilled his indentures and is now free to return to respectable society. But it turns out that he was born on February 29 in leap year, and he remains apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday. By the end of the operetta, the pirates, a Major General who knows nothing of military strategy, his large family of beautiful but unwed daughters, and the timid constabulary all contribute to a cacophony that can be silenced only by Queen Victoria's name.

This time the cast of characters is set on the Cornish coast, and features tender-hearted orphaned pirates, a comely maiden (Bronwyn White) and a handsome, young apprentice, Frederic (Rafael Moras) under the rule of the Pirate King (Christopher Garcia). Frederic's lovesick nursemaid (Amanda Cullom) and the Major General Stanley (Donald Bayne) round out this cast of loyal Queen Victoria subjects!
