Way Off Broadway Community Players will audition for Derek Benfield's comedy First Things First on September 17, 7 p.m., at their playhouse at 11880 W. FM 2243 in Leander, TX, between US 183 and Bagdad Road (click for map).

Pete and George are old friends. In fact, such good old friends that George has been Pete’s best man at both of his weddings. On a dark and stormy night Purity Dean, a working girl with a secret, seeks shelter from the storm in a Central Texas Inn she’s been forced to give up her canning factory job as she can no longer endure black hearted Mortimer Frothingham's attentions. Working as a maid at the inn, owned by Jonathan and Zamah Logan, she falls in love with their nephew - the noble hero, Leander, who works in a pickle factory.
But Mortimer still pursues Purity and will win her by fair or foul means. And so he begins his campaign of villainy. He locks our hero, in a room with a time bomb. He escapes in the nick of time, but Mortimer's disappeared. Heavily disguised, he returns and Purity's treated to more double dealing and double crossing.Enter several mysterious guests with a multitude of pasts….and agendas. Naturally, Virtue eventually triumphs. Purity's secret is discovered, bringing her great wealth and happiness with Leander.

Way Off Broadway Community Players will be holding auditions for the classic drama Bus Stop by William Inge, directed by Linda L. Durkin, on Monday July 30 at 7 p.m. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script.

In the middle of a blizzard, a bus pulls up at a roadside diner. All roads are blocked and the weary travelers are going to have to hole up until morning. Cherie is the passenger with most to worry about. She's been pursued, and kidnapped by Bo, an exuberant cowboy with the romantic methods of a headstrong bull. Virgil, Bo's friend and mentor tries to keep him in check with only limited success. As a counterpoint, Grace, the diner's owner, and the bus driver, Carl, at last find time to develop a "friendship" of their own. A former professor comes to terms with himself; and a young waitress gets her first taste of romance. All the while the Sheriff keeps close watch on the weather, the roads, and the diverse group of people stranded together for one long night at the Bus Stop.

In the middle of a howling snowstorm in Kansas, a bus pulls up at a roadside diner. All roads are blocked, and four or five weary travelers are going to have to hole up until morning. Cherie, a chanteuse in a sparkling gown and a seedy fur- trimmed jacket, is the passenger with most to worry about. She's been pursued, and finally kidnapped by a belligerent cowboy, Bo, with a Montana ranch of his own and the romantic methods of an unusually headstrong bull. Virgil, the older cowboy traveling with Bo, tries to keep him in check. As a counterpoint to the main romance, the proprietor of the cafe and the bus driver at last find time to develop a friendship of their own; a middle-aged scholar comes to terms with himself; and a young girl who works in the cafe also gets her first taste of romance. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Needing cash, Victor reluctantly takes on a new patient who, due to love frustration, is grinding out a rip roaring sex life. By mistake, Victor’s nurse gives the patient's manuscript to Parker, believing it to be Victor's work. Suddenly Victor has an enormous advance royalty check, a Book of the Month Club selection and a potential Pulitzer prize. When he discovers it’s his patient's confidences and not his casebook that have saved the day, Victor determines to keep his patient crazy until he dreams up the final chapter. Aunt Martha’s choice is Brandon Cates, a young man who handles her finances. Although Brandon is already engaged to be mar ried, this does not deter Aunt Martha. Isobel Lomax and Dolly Biddle are two cable-access cooking show hostesses who have hated each other for 30 years, ever since Larry Biddle dated one and married the other. When circumstances put them together on a TV show called The Kitchen Witches, the insults are flung harder than the food! 

Dolly's long-suffering TV-producer son, Stephen, tries to keep them on track, but as long as Dolly's dressing room is one inch closer to the set than Isobel's, it's a losing battle, and the show becomes a rating’s smash as Dolly and Isobel top both Martha Stewart and Jerry Springer! Simmer together two battling chef’s, whip in one long-suffering producer, fold in insults, props and food, then sprinkle liberally with an animated audience and you have the tasty treat of a great evening of fun.

The time is the 1800’s and one of the worst dust storms of the century has hit a western town. All the townsmen have left to help move the ranchers’ precious livestock to safe shelter. The women in the area are left to find their own safe shelter in the strongest building in town: the saloon and brothel. Tempers flare and sparks fly, injected with comedy, when society ladies are forced to take refuge with the “fallen” women. Now a lone cowboy stumbles in, a mysterious stranger who may or may not be a U.S. Marshal. Which adds to the tension because the women of the saloon are trying to dispose of the bartender’s body - who was killed in self defense - before anyone discovers the murder! As the storm kicks into high gear, there’s a tempest brewing inside. For three days everyone is forced to face each other and themselves. Femininity meets machismo and both are stripped bare as everyone fights the roles in which society has them pegged. Love, self esteem and a healthy dose of laughter are the results.

GERTIE - Louise's daughter. Repressed as a child, she’s a good girl about to hit the fan.
REBECCA - A sturdy woman, recently blind and hating that this cost her independence.

Charlie, a bachelor in New York, lives the ideal life. Charlie has a great apartment, a good job, and millions of beautiful ladies—all eager to bring him food, clean his apartment and fall in with his every wish. Joe, an old friend from Indianapolis, who has come to New York because he thinks he's discovered a cure for the common cold, is very much taken with Charlie’s life style and more than somewhat envious. He finds himself becoming interested in Sylvia, the nicest of the ladies, while Charlie finds himself getting more and more involved with Julie, a luscious morsel just out of college. Julie is in love with Charlie, but she's determined he's going to do things the way she wants them done. Charlie juggles the ladies till one frantic evening he finds himself engaged to both Julie and Sylvia, and one amusing scene after another results until he finally manages to get rid of the wrong young lady and marry the right one.

Fifty-one-year-old Julia Goldman thought she had experienced it all. Although she had been widowed for two years, she was left financially well-fixed with two grown children who were busy with their successful careers. Life was routine and uneventful for Julia in her Hollywood home. She thought she would just ease into the rest of her days without anything notable looming on the horizon. Suddenly, "Life with a Capital L" hands her what is to become the biggest decision of her life; the sort of occurrence to which many a younger woman would hardly be equal. An accidental encounter in the cocktail lounge of a posh hotel with a man who sweeps her off her feet and then disappears, leaves her with much more than just a fond memory. She is no longer able to conceal her predicament. The sibling rivalry of her children, plus her own with her flamboyant sister, Verna, add to the complexity and to the resolution of her plight.

Christmas Eve is tough for private investigator Cactus , a white hot redhead with the holiday blues. She is trying to lure her secretary Fred away from his protective mother, dodging the affections of Deputy D.A. Windsor, and consider-ing closing her business. She doesn't need the added aggra-vation of two fugitives who burst into her office looking for justice and a dead detective named Jake Marley. The greedy Princess Elaine wants the Witch's cat because it is magical and tells the Court Magician to get it for her. But the cat runs away, and the Petulant Princess no longer wants it. However, the Witch now needs a new cat...so, who does she find? The King, Morton the Magician and Twirl the Jester work together to defeat the witch and try to save Elaine. And then, something magical really does happen!

Tony Wendice has planned the perfect murder to get rid of his wealthy wife who is having an affair with Max. Tony hires Swann, a petty criminal, to kill Margot, while he has a rock solid alibi. But things don’t always go according to plan, and the murderer ends up dead while the victim survives. This doesn’t stop Tony in his quest to get rid of Margot, who gets arrested for murdering Swann for trying to blackmail her about the affair. Can Max persuade Chief Inspector Hubbard about Margot’s innocence and reveal the real criminal?

Huge oil reserves have been discovered in The Chagos Islands and O.P.E.C. is pressuring the Chagosians to join the cartel. During a torrential storm, an inept CIA agent - who gets caught in all his own booby traps and security measures, and an under Secretary of State - whose life appears to be run by her libido, are sent to a safe house in the mountains of Virginia to begin negotiations for the U.S. to place the Chagos Islands under their protection. Unfortunately, no one knows who the islands' representative really is. Could it be the stranded televangelist, his innocent secretary, the ex-marine caretaker or the mysterious neighbor? To further complicate the negotiations, there are multiple misunderstandings, missed cues and unwanted romantic attentions. Added together you have a complex, laugh out loud farce that will keep you chuckling long after the evening is done!

Tony Dawson, a greeting card writer, has lost his wife Margo because he talks in couplets on the wrong occasions. She plans to marry her boss, a breakfast food tycoon. Tony, in a last ditch attempt to win her back, offers to throw a no hard feelings engagement party. His plans are complicated by the arrival of a friend who is a perpetual student, the nightclub singer for whom he is writing special material, and his editor who stops by just before the party to collect his monthly greeting card output. Irv is wearing a towel on his way to the shower, Coral gets her dress ripped off, and the editor in the go go outfit is stashed in the closet which Tony pretends is a darkroom. Add to this a nightclub full of midget waiters, a ghastly television show on which Tony accidentally pans Saga more's breakfast cereal, and all manner of people being shoved behind screens, out into halls, into closets and shower stalls and you have one of the wackiest farces ever seen on a stage.
