Lend Me A Tenor is a door-slamming, dress-dropping farce with mistaken identities, mischievous misunderstandings and compromising positions. It is the biggest night in the history of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company, and world-famous Italian tenor Signor Tito Merelli will be their guest artist in "Otello," highlight of the company's most important fundraiser for the 1934 season.
But Tito's troubled life, his hot-headed wife, and a "Dear John" letter mistaken as Tito's suicide note sends everybody's head swimming. No Tito, no $50,000 in ticket sales. Find the dead singer! Meanwhile, Max -- opera singer wanna-be -- is coerced into impersonating the Italian great to save the show. In costume, wig and make-up, he's is a dead ringer for the dead singer. And then it happens. Tito Merelli wakes up from his apparent one-too-many-sedatives, refreshed and ready for the spotlight!
Toss in a belligerent bellhop, a steamy soprano and a flamboyant opera director, and "Lend Me a Tenor" turns a rib-tickling romp of who kissed who into giggles and gasps of "it was you"?

Auditions in Leander for Fox on the Fairway by Ken Ludwig, Way Off Broadway Community Players, Leander, March 4, 2013

Filled with mistaken identities, slamming doors, and over-the-top romantic shenanigans, it's a furiously paced comedy that recalls the Marx Brothers' classics. A charmingly madcap adventure about love, life, and man's eternal love affair with… golf. This is a wonderfully manic satire not just of the golf world, but of human nature…full of the idiosyncrasies that are hidden, just barely, inside us all.
“A belly laugh marathon! An amazingly ingenious satirical farce.”− Showbizradio.net

Lend Me A Tenor by Ken Ludwig, Gaslight Baker Theatre, Lockhart, January 27 - February 18
by Michael Meigs
Ken Ludwig's Lend Me A Tenor is one of those 'sure fire' inventions beloved of theatre companies across the world. Since the 1986 debut in London it has been translated into 16 languages and produced in 25 countries.
The Gaslight Baker Theatre is currently staging a vivid and funny production of this farce, a fable of mistaken identities, dizzy romance and worldly sophistication. Aspiring timidity meets bravado, and bigger-than-life Italian passions transform smaller-than-life American provincials. The year is 1934. Great Itallian tenor Tito Morelli is arriving for a single guest performance of Verdi's Otello at the improbable Cleveland Grand Opera Company, and he's about to overwhelm the locals, the society ladies, the cast of the opera, and above all, our ingénue Maggie (Francine Olguin) and her hapless would-be suitor Max.
Max (David Young) has been appointed by Cleveland's growling opera impresario Saunders (Donald Owen) to keep the visiting star sober, satisfied and out of trouble -- an impossible job, even though Morelli is accompanied by his glamorously shrewish wife Maria (Candice Carr).
This is a plot that runs like clockwork, complete with romance, jealousy, officiousness, quarrels, disguises, a pertly intrusive servant (Chris Schnaible as the starstruck bellhop), slamming doors and a potent potion that knocks out the Great Man and gives the Little Man the opportunity to triumph unrecognized as his substitute. Yes, Steve Lawson as Morelli and Dave Young as Max are of different heights and builds, but with the magic of the costuming and makeup of stage disguise, predictably, no one can tell them apart!
Now, is that likely? No! Is it even probable? No! And do we care? Double no!
These two familiar Lockhart stalwarts make us root for Max and give us good reason to like Tito Morelli. They even demonstrate singing voices that are passably good enough to convince us in this make-believe world that either could go out there and give Verdi what-for. Young may overdo Max's nervous tics a bit, especially at the opening, and Lawson's Italian-a accent isn't as consistent as that of Maria (Candice Carr), but we hang on every surprise turn in the plot. Director Todd Martin sets a fine fast clip to this action and displays a keen understanding for the pictorial impact in farce of clever movement and positioning of his actors.

This night in September of 1934 is the biggest in the history of the Cleveland Grand Opera Company. World famous tenor Tito Morelli is to perform Otello, his greatest role, at the gala season opener. Saunders, the harried General Manager, hopes this will put Cleveland on the cultural map. Morelli is nowhere to be found; when he finally arrives drunk, it is too late for any rehearsal. Through a hilarious series of mishaps, 'Il Stupendo' is given a double dose of tranquilizers which mix with the booze he has consumed and he passes out. His pulse is so low that Saunders and his assistant Max believe he is dead. What to do?
Saunders coaxes Max into Morelli's costume, intending to fool the audience with this fake 'Il Stupendo', blackface and all. Nervous amateur Max succeeds admirably, but Morelli revives and dresses for his second act. We now have two Otellos in costume and two women (in questionable stages of dress), each thinking she is with the real 'Il Stupendo'.
What follows is a chain-reaction of mistaken identity, farcical plot twists, double entendres, innuendoes, and constant entrances and exits through many doors as the farce spins out of control onstage and off.

In this hilarious comedy by the author of Lend Me a Tenor and Moon Over Buffalo, two English Shakespearean actors, Jack and Leo, find themselves so down on their luck that they are performing "Scenes from Shakespeare" on the Moose Lodge circuit in the Amish country of Pennsylvania. When they hear that an old lady in York, Pennsylvania is about to die and leave her fortune to her two long-lost English nephews, they resolve to pass themselves off as her beloved relatives and get the cash. The trouble is, when they get to York, they find out that the relatives aren't nephews, but nieces!
Romantic entanglements abound, specially when Leo falls head-over-petticoat in love with the old lady's vivacious niece Meg, who's engaged to the local minister. Meg knows that there's a wide world out there, but it's not until she meets "Maxine and Stephanie" that she finally gets a taste of it.
Cast: Kirsten Schulte, Ed Trujillo, Mark Butler, Matt Sigers, Tazz Kelly, Caitlin Sullivan, Keegan Kelly, Jo Rake
