Sing Muse Vortex Repertory Austin TX

Sing Muse - an original a cappella musical - returns to The VORTEX with an all-new production where music and dance, comedy and tragedy, poetry and science come together to retell an ancient story of human love touched by divine inspiration. The VORTEX transforms into the Theatre of Dionysus--in beautiful downtown Athens!
Few remember Thamyris, the once-legendary poet of Ancient Greece who was the first man to fall in love with another man. But the Muses remember. Thamyris claimed he could make art superior to the Muses’ and failed. After defeating him, they sentenced him to an eternity in Hell. However, eternity is a long time, and now The Muses give Thamyris one last chance to redeem himself.

This production of Sing Muse is the next phase of its artistic development. Devised last year, Sing Muse received a workshop production in August 2012. This new Sing Muse combines the best of the first production with new songs, dances, and poetry to reach divine heights.

The ensemble cast features Jonathan Itchon, Chelsea Manasseri, Melissa Vogt-Patterson, Hayley Armstrong, Laura Ray, Karen Rodriguez, Nikki Zook, Leslie Hollingsworth, Michelle Alexander, and Aisha Melhem.

Directed by Rudy Ramirez, Scenic Design by Ann Marie Gordon, Lighting Design by Patrick Anthony, Choreography by M’bewe Escobar. Music by Chelsea Manasseri, Rudy Ramirez, and Melissa Vogt-Patterson. Musical Arrangements by Chelsea Manasseri.

Musical Direction by Chelsea Manserri and Jennifer Coy.

The Cast:
  • Hayley Armstrong: Urania, Muse of Astronomy
  • Nikki Zook: Polyhymnia, Muse of Hymns and Religious Poetry
  • Aisha Melhem\: Terpsichore, Muse of Dance
  • Michelle Alexander: Calliope, Muse of Epic Poetry

Different Stages continues its 2011-2012 season with Doug Wright's Quills. Sex. Perversion. Violence. These are the themes of the tales that drip from the ink-laden quills of the notoriously irreverent Marquis de Sade in this Obie Award winning play. Confined to the Charenton Asylum for the Insane for the outlandish escapades he'd committed during the Napoleonic Era, the Marquis continues to pen his stories to the delight of the young seamstress, Madeleine, and to the scorn of Charenton's devout Abbe de Coulmeir. When the Abbe attempts to silence the Marquis by taking his quills, his ink, and his paper, something intriguing occurs: the Marquis still finds a way to voice his scandalous yarns. As the Abbe's religious devotion clashes with the Marquis's dedication to freedom of expression, the audience is treated to a tale of wit, irony, blasphemy, philosophy, and the struggle for power told partly as a blend of comedy of manners and Grand Guignol with a dash of grotesque exaggeration and a soupcon of gore.

Directed by Norman Blumensaadt (Is Life Worth Living?) Quills features Craig Kanne (You Can't Take it with You) as the Marquis de Sade and Jean Budney (Is Life Worth Living?) as his wife Renee Pelagie. Travis Bedard (Doctor Faustus) plays the director of Charenton Asylum. Joe Hartman (Vampire Lesbians of Sodom) plays the Abbe de Coulmier, a priest at the asylum. Melissa Vogt-Patterson (Humpty) plays the seamstress, Madeleine. Tony Salinas (You Can't Take it with You) plays the architect.

THIS UH...BODY is a high energy, sometimes-comical, often-tragical, always-compelling look at what happens when a body suddenly appears on a busy street full of busy people with busy jobs ... people just happy the bullet missed them today ...all too busy to notice ... a Body? Through poetic, stylized physical acting with original music and a lot of briefcases, THIS UH...BODY comes to life.

Sure, somebody gets shot, but who? The nagging Housewife? Her comatose Husband? The not-so-blind Beggar or bumbling Thief? The jovial Cop is sure everything is fine. Meanwhile, the Cat Lady sheds her fur, has a good roll and slinks away with her friends. Is this uh . . . body . . . dead or alive? The Bag Lady doesn't care, the Little Girl does, her Friend thinks it's totally weird, and we all spiral through a mesmerizing world of the remaining scraps of humanity.

THIS UH...BODY features a powerful cast of physical actors! Principals in the company include artistic director Michael Lee, Amelia Turner, Kyle Connealy, and Melissa Trevino. Joining them are Becky Karpovsky, Anna McConnell, Lucas Reilly, Melissa Vogt-Patterson, and Joanna Wright.

Conceived, written and choreographed by Michael Lee. Original music by Bradley Murphy. Lighting Design by Steven Shirey

Loosely based on the nursery rhyme characters Humpty Dumpty, The Spoon, The Dish, The Cow, The Dog, and The Moon, ethos offers up a dark tale with adult aesthetics. Melissa Vogt-Patterson's story delves deeper into the simple tale on the surface of the nursery rhyme, uncovering a story of Civil War, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, slavery, and the disparity of the wealthy and the poor. Both a love story and a war tale, :Humpty defies expectation as the audience peers into a mix of live action, music, video, movement, and gossip.

Humpty begins his journey as the washed out General of King Koray's (Moon) army. On the anniversary of the last battle of the civil war, he discovers that his closest neighbor, the wealthy mage Sir Wedgewood (Dish), has acquired a delicious new Mistress (Spoon) whom he keeps magically enchanted in the form of a silver spoon. Humpty's lust for her knows no bounds, and he manages to steal her away from Sir Wedgewood at the King's celebratory ball. Betrayal, magical armies, and mortal combat ensue as the characters fight for their lives, loves, and freedom.

The VORTEX is transformed into the Tea House of Mother Güs who greets and gossips with the audience, telling all about the Moon Kingdom. New illustrated nursery rhymes describing each character and their part in the story are displayed in The Butterfly Bar. The audience is invited to immerse themselves in the world of :Humpty and come to their own conclusions.

Based on the true story of The Bloody Countess, Erzsebet Bathori, this original opera is a tale of horror, murder, and magic created by award-winning Ethos composer and designer Chad Salvata. Vampyress received accolades when it debuted at The Vortex in 2005, including winning B. Iden Payne Awards for Outstanding Original Score (Chad Salvata), Outstanding Lead Actress (Melissa Vogt-Patterson), and Outstanding Supporting Actress (Betsy McCann).

Born in 16th-century Hungary, this Bloody Countess, Bathori, murdered hundreds of young women and bathed in their blood in order to sustain her youth and beauty. This historical figure has been both vilified and honored over the centuries. Salvata’s embellishment of her notorious downfall produces a powerful and mysterious work of storytelling.
