Richard III by William Shakespeare, Texas State University, February 12 - 16, 2013

Richard III William Shakespeare Texas State
Austin Live Theatre review

by Michael Meigs

Richard III is a portrait of a monster.  He's a killer, more forthright than Iago and without a shred of the scruples of Macbeth.  This is the protagonist who tells us he's going to court a grieving royal widow as she stands over her husband's body "though I kill'd her husband and her father," and achieves that impossibility. She agrees to marry him.

The immensity of this deformed soul's shamelessness is astounding.  Richard III was the portrait of a sociopath before the diagnosis was invented, the story of a demon in human form.  The single-mindedness of Richard's evil is grotesque, and if this story hadn't been presented in Shakespeare's verse, it would have been worth little more than the prancing devil of a provincial church pageant.

A further complication is that this 1592 play opens in medias res -- it's a direct continuation of Shakespeare's galumphing first three plays, Henry VI, parts one through three, in which the Yorks and the Lancasters fight it out.  A director may be tempted simply to assume all that background away, throwing his audience directly into the maw of this deformed and demented protagonist with his memorable opening line "Now is the winter of our discontent."  American audiences, especially university audiences, certainly can't tell a white rose from a red one.  It was all a long time ago and in England, and who cares, anyway?

 Richard III Texas State Universty

Director Chuck Ney's ingenious approach to establishing this dense plot line and making us care about it is to situate it an unspecified airport.  While waiting for the action to start, we hear the distant crossing whine of landing airliners.  When the lights come up, we find ourselves in a shabby security room with banks of old-fashioned television sets.  Eugene Lee has a remote control in hand, and after he settles his twisted figure into an office chair, pops a can of Heineken and hits the button, those TVs come alive.  We see brief videos in multiple images across all those televisions, recording the confrontation when Richard gunned down the Lancaster Prince of Wales, the ceremonial accession of Richard's brother Edward and the shrill denunciations of widowed Queen Margaret.  There's an equatorial third-world look to all of it, and many of the faces are those of people of color.

The texts of these videos are taken from the final scenes of the Henry VI plays.  By this point, before Richard first speaks directly to the audience, spectators understand that bloody business has been underway, the reigning king is no saint and the ousted queen is ferocious and bereaved.

Director Julio Mella also takes the title role. This happens often with these players. The guy with the biggest role directs the whole play. That's how Shakespeare did it and they rarely mess with a winning formula. Julio Mella was a core member of Austin Drama Club from its first show in November of '06. The company produced his Richard III a few years back and Julio has been gung ho to do it again for a while now. He takes his inspiration for this repertory production from his love of gangster movies about the time of Al Capone and prohibition. Look for the actors to carry tommy guns as they chop down their enemies in a ill-fated rise to power. Richard is a bad man. You won't believe some of the things this guy does.

Christopher Harris and Casey Allen return from the old cast. They are joined by company members Steven Brandt, Sabrina Tarbutton, and Kevin Karowski. Megan Berry and Chrstyl Climans join the cast for their first show with the Players.

See the video above or at Austindramaclub.com but remember that the company has been modified and the dates are new. The show opens very quickly on March 11,12,13 and 18,19,20 in the comfortable new venue at The Community Renaissance Market at 6800 Westgate Blvd in south Austin. Cash only at the door. $8 gets you in. Seating begins 7: 30 p.m.

Richard III, Austin Drama Club, July 30 - August 22

He was standing at the gate when I walked up. East 7th and Concho. This looked like the place.

"Is this where the play is?"

He looked me over.

"Yeah. Go ahead. The house is open."

Yes, it was open. And it was a house. Dark inside, with rough fabric curtains hanging between the entry and the kitchen, and then between the kitchen and the living area. Cooler this time, with an air conditioner laboring away in the depths of the room. Singly or in couples, the audience gathered. Friendly enough. Waiting, though. Quietly murmuring.

The lights dimmed, a curtain moved aside. Barely visible in the low light, a man in a scruffy suit stood there, then lurched forward toward us, into the playing space.

"Now is the winter of our discontent. . . ."

Richard III, Shakespeare at Winedale, July 16 - August 9

Shakespeare at Winedale is most of the way through its July 16 - August 9 summer season of three plays done by students accepted for its "Shakespeare boot camp." Those of us who attended last Saturday afternoon's performance of
Richard III saw the cast gather in a circle and heard them chanting vocal exercises, a prep to get the blood racing for their performance.

The barn at Winedale has been the performance locale since 1970. One is reminded of the traditions by photos, story telling, a succession of painted wooden cows from recent years and by the extensively reserved front rows, saved for patrons, participants and alumni of the program. We of the general public could claim any vacant seats with a tidy little card from the box office, starting an hour before the performance.

You'd think that 100+ degree temperatures would be killing, but you'd be wrong. There was a hot wind blowing, but although the barn is open-sided, it is cooled by surprisingly effective air conditioning. Enough cool air flows down from the rafters to keep the audience sweat free. And the play is gripping.

Upcoming: Richard III, Austin Drama Club, July 30 - August 22

UPDATE: Review by ALT, August 16

Austin Drama Club presents

Richard III

by William Shakespeare
July 30 through Aug 22
Thursdays - Saturdays at 8 p.m.
Austin Drama Club is in the house at the corner of 7th St. East and Concho.

Richard III is directed by Julio Mella, a core member since our first production of Henry V in the winter of '06. Here Julio directs for the first time and takes the title role. His vision for the play takes its inspiration from the Mafia spirit of Mario Puzzo's Godfather books and from the black and white gangster movies from the 1930s - 1950s. ADC expects that this production will inspire more people to come see this classic that gives us some great lines including,
"My kingdom for a horse!"

Julio is joined by several Austin Drama Club vets --

Jennifer Fielding (the Witch in
The Wizard of Oz)

Jessie Satura joined our company as uncle Exter in our last production of Henry V. He is from that fine Wimberly acting tradition.

Casey Allen, who will direct and star in our upcoming encore production of Oscar Wilde's
Salomé. Casey has played Romeo and several supporting roles along the way since '06.

Christopher Harris is our lead in
Titus Andronicus and Salomé. He played Antonio in The Merchant of Venice and Horatio in our 4 productions of Hamlet.

Erin Jo Enochs was the the star of our production of
Oedipus. She played Shylock's wife in The Merchant of Venice and Desdemona in Othello.

Richard Bateman is a magician and story teller who joins the cast for his first show with Austin Drama Club. Look for him to perform his show here later this fall.

Japhy Fernandes does the lights and sets with help from his wife Ellen Fernandes.

Reservations available via e-mail to
