Tartuffe is a self-righteous, mischievous, religious conman, who wins the confidence of the wealthy but gullible Orgon. When, against the wishes of his wife, Orgon orders his daughter to marry Tartuffe, the comedy unfolds as the household is thrown into turmoil. In spite of all the evidence, Orgon continues to believe that Tartuffe is not a fraud, but a worldly saint, and it’s up to his wife to expose Tartuffe as a charlatan. Will Orgon realize the truth before it’s too late, or will Tartuffe ruin them all?
Tartuffe was a popular hit from its opening in 1664, even though it also ignited controversy due to the implied criticism of religion. Widely recognized as one of Molière’s masterpieces, Tartuffe remains as hilarious and relevant as it was 350 years ago!

The Laramie Project chronicles how the town of Laramie, Wyoming, comes to grips with the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard, a gay student at the University of Wyoming.

In October 1998, Matthew Shepard was savagely beaten and left to die, tied to a fence outside of Laramie. The murder focused the nation’s attention on the lack of hate crime laws. A month after the murder, Moisés Kaufman and members of Tectonic Theater Project conducted hundreds of interviews with residents of Laramie. They combined these interviews, their own reactions, and media reports into a moving theatre piece in which the company portrays over sixty characters. (For mature audiences.)

The film of this play opened at the Sundance Film Festival in 2002 and was nominated for 4 Emmys.

This whimsical play features two great friends, the cheerful and popular Frog and the rather grumpy Toad, through four fun-filled seasons. Waking from hibernation in the spring, they plant gardens, swim, rake leaves, and go sledding. Often accompanied by other animals (birds, moles, squirrels, a mouse, a turtle, and a snail), they sing and dance through the seasons, with the song "Merry Almost Christmas" ushering in the holidays. They learn life lessons as they go, including one about friendship and rejoicing in the attributes that make each of us different and special. They find that true friendship never goes out of season. 1940s Radio Hour Southwestern UniversityIt’s Christmas time in 1942. On a cold and snowy evening, a close-knit group of entertainers at a small New York City radio station-all heading somewhere else-are broadcasting the final holiday variety show for the troops overseas. Patriotic, sentimental, and overwhelmingly nostalgic, this holiday musical production is reminiscent of an era long since passed, but never completely forgotten.

Many local artists will be performing in this production.

Joey Banks is a Southwestern University 2007 alum. He has acted in Footloose, Zilker Summer Musical Theatre, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Austin Shakespeare, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Zach Theater, Hair! San Jose Repertory Theatre, Girlfriend, TheatreWorks, and The Madwoman of Chaillot, California Theatre Center.

Trumpet player Walter “Bud” Emmert resides in Sun City. In 1951-52 he was in charge of the Bergstrom Air Force Stage band. He has played in the Austin Symphony in 1951-52, the Lawrence Welk Show in 1948, and with Kay Kyser on a USO tour in 1945.

Clarinet player Pete Geiger resides in Sun City. He performed in many ensembles including, the United States Navy Band and Orchestra in Washington, D.C. from 1947-65, New York Queens Symphony, Paul LaValles Orchestra at Radio City Music Hall, and Sun City Texas Jazz Band. Cloud Nine by Caryl Churchill, Southwestern University, September 28 - October 2

Cloud Nine Caryl Churchill Southwestern University

Caryl Churchill's Cloud Nine is a gender bender and a time twister, a sly comic look at sex and sexual roles in the Victorian British Empire and in the contemporary United Kingdom. One of the many clever twists of the piece, the fruit of some intensive workshopping with actors, is that seventy-five years pass between the two acts but the characters age only thirty years. Churchill explained that that arose from the fact that her 1970's contemporaries felt that their own sexual roles were shaped by the standards of Victorian England.

Some of the results are predictable -- males with flaring nostrils and surging sexual drives in colonial Africa, a devotion to good Queen Victoria, women dutiful yet unfulfilled, and the modern confusions about marriage, sexuality and child-rearing. Others are anything but predictable: notably the cross-gender casting in both worlds, which directly raises the issues of roles, gender roles, play and role-play.

Add to that the audacious transformations of the seven-member cast. Robert Frost as manly Clive, master of the mansion, the family and the natives in deepest darkest Africa in Act I, becomes the impetuous and spoiled seven-year-old Cathyin Act II. Chris Weihert, who in conscientious drag plays Clive's pining wife Betty in the first part, becomes Vicki's miffed, well meaning husband in the second. Jessica Hughes slips a full generation with the ease of a firefighter dropping down the fire pole in response to a three-alarm fire: sniffy traditional mother Maud living with her daughter Betty and family in an increasingly menacing Africa, and then Betty herself, now in her sixties, divorced, alone and slowly awakening to her own long-neglected body.

A Special Theatre and Music Department Collaboration

Muggers, smugglers, prostitutes, and thieves. Nobody plays by the rules, least of all MacHeath-bandit, hedonist, superhero to some, villain to others. John Gay’s opera brings to life the greed, lust, and corruption of 18th Century London. A dark, seedy, absurd, visually rich, and cruelly comic production.

The Beggar’s Opera premiered at the Lincoln’s Inn Fields Theatre on 29 January 1728 and ran for 62 consecutive performances, the longest run in theatre history up to that time.

In 1920, The Beggar’s Opera began an astonishing revival run of 1,463 performances at the Lyric Theatre in Hammersmith, London, which was one of the longest runs in history for any piece of musical theatre at that time.

According to The New York Times: “Gay wrote the work more as an anti-opera than an opera, one of its attractions to its 18th-century London public being its lampooning of the Italian opera style and the English public’s fascination with it.”

Beirut by Alan Bowne

Directed by Alexis Gette ‘13

Beirut is the story of a Brooklyn man quarantined in the Lower East Side after testing positive for a deadly, nameless virus. His girlfriend, who has not been infected, makes the dangerous journey across the quarantine line to be with him. The plague has upped the ante on love and introduced them to sacrifice. They are a Romeo and Juliet of the boroughs. An East Side story.

(Adult subject matter for mature audiences only)

Night Maneuver by Howard Korder
Directed by Abraham Ramirez ‘13

A series of lies and inconsistencies drive this plot and the relationship between brothers, Lou, Tim, and the absent Monty whose heavy shadow follows them throughout. An underhanded power-struggle between the two ensues, as Lou acts as the rather obnoxious patronizing older brother, and Tim the pathetic and helpless younger brother. It becomes clear that both of them have their secrets. Using mind games and deception, they each try to catch the other out. Intriguing and touching, this play is a powerful unfolding of the human construct that reveals its inner-most fragility.
