Austin Premiere: MAD & A GOAT, a new play by Diana Small with Heather Johnson, FronteraFest at Salvage Vanguard, January 21 - February 1, 2014

Mad & A Goat

by Diana Small
a FronteraFest Long Fringe presentation
January 21 - February 1, 2014
Salvage Vanguard Theatre, 2803 Manor Rd. - click for map

This is a two-women show about one woman, who, to free herself from college debt, joins a Wyoming goat farm she inherits from her occult-leader birth parents. There is seduction. There is beer. There are biscuits. And let’s not forget about the goats.

FronteraFest is the ideal setting for Mad & A Goat's Austin premiere. The play had a workshop production in the first ever Fort Collins Fringe Festival at Bas Bleu Theatre last August with the intent of further developing the work for an Austin audience.

Diana Small, currently a playwriting fellow in UT’s Michener Center for Writers, premieres her new play Mad & A Goat in this year’s Long Fringe at FronteraFest at Salvage Vanguard Theater. The play shows four times: Tuesday, January 21 at 7 pm, Saturday, January 25 at 3:30 pm, Tuesday, January 28 at 9:15 pm and Saturday, February 1 at 8:45 pm. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased online at fronterafest.com.

Diana also acts in the show with longtime collaborator Heather Johnson, who ventures to Austin from her home in Fort Collins, CO to perform in the play. Mad & A Goat was developed with support from ScriptWorks’ Seed Support Fund. Also contributing to the play’s development is Rachel Gilbert, assistant directing and stage managing, and Rachel Alulis with design.

Before moving to Austin, Diana Small acted in the Lit Moon Theatre Company in Santa Barbara, CA. More recently, Diana returned to Santa Barbara last November to reprise her role of Queen Margaret in Henry VI Part 3. Heather Johnson is a full-time actor in Fort Collins and founded the city’s improv troupe, The Comedy Brewers. In Austin, Diana wrote and directed the play Suspicious Dinner at the 2013 Cohen New Works Festival presented by the University Co-Op, and she wrote Dream: A Midsummer Forrest Tour directed by Will Davis for the Zach Theatre’s balcony play series. Diana premiered the show Be Still and Know Nothing co-created with Patrick Shaw and Caleb Britton at UT’s Lab Theatre last December.

Innocent When You Dream by Zeb L. West, Salvage Vanguard Theatre, October 25 and 26, 2013

ALT review

by Dr. David Glen Robinson

Innocent When You Dream just shrieks festival piece—simple set design, simple-looking props, simply costumed performer sleeping and dreaming on-stage as the house opens. All these things have to be in place and removed quickly in a sequence of similar performance pieces performed in one evening. Then all of it has to be crated up and shipped to the next festival. After the curtain call, Zeb West, the creator and performer of Innocent When You Dream thanked his Kickstarter contributors for supporting the piece’s travels so far.

But that was later. When the performance lights went up at the beginning of the performance, there was a waking man telling us we’re all in the belly of the whale together with him, and his name is Jonah. OK, now we knew this was a piece about insanity, confirmed by Jonah’s incessant talk of the crackers that he lived on that all got soggy so he can’t share any with the audience.

Innocent When You Dream Zeb L. West Austin TX

Where could anyone go with this insane premise? Mr. West/Jonah showed deftness in taking us with him with his sweetness, friendliness, and a lot of encouraging talk directly to the audience. The audience was with him from the git-go. He showed a certain boldness as well, spinning engaging material out of the two probably mossiest, most hidebound but eternally fascinating works of literature found lying about inside whales, Don Quixote and Moby Dick. West merged their stories into a lament for all lives and relationships gone wrong. Yes, this show was about love and loss.

Trouble Puppet’s creations always have the quality of imagination in their fabrication, color, and concept. The human touch gives them life. And puppeteers, good ones, know the character they want to give each puppet. All of Zeb West’s puppets were hand puppets, their characters keyed distinctively by West’s character voices. Their stories meshed into a satisfying whole, and the stage was inhabited by a number of fascinating characters, without any use of ventriloquism.

Trouble Puppet Theatre Company member West has taken a slightly different tack with Innocent When You Dream, His one-man show, but he retains their commitment to innovative puppetry, heightening the band's reputation for skillful and efficient production. The audience was happy to render its standing ovation in appreciation. The show ran only one weekend, October 25 and 26 at the Salvage Vanguard Theatre studio space. My only wish for this worthy show would be for a longer run and a printed program to give due credit to the producing staff, designers, and the 98 supporters who kicked in $4240 -- 125% of Zeb's goal -- through his Kickstarter page to make possible his production and summer 2013 tour across Canada and the United States.

Nikotine Milena Milanova Bulgarian Puppetry Salvage Vanguard Austin TX

Nikotine
Written, Directed & Starring Milena Milanova

Nikolai Nikotine is humiliated and terrorized by his wife. He appears before the audience, at her insistence, to discuss the evils of smoking. Embarking on a public psychotherapy session, Nikotine lies and tells the truth, loves and hates, makes important decisions, tests our patience, sings and dances, and introduces us to his only friends, trying in vain the whole time to speak against one of his few remaining pleasures in life: smoking.

This adaptation of On the Evils of Tobacco by Anton Chekhov stars actress/interpreter Milena Milanova and a grumpy Russian puppet in a cabaret-style atmosphere, where the audience can experience the Slavic spirit in both its cruel and amusing incarnations.

Praise for Nikotine: "Combining puppetry with some beautiful scenes of physical theatre, 'Nikotine' is at the same time sweet, unique and strangely addictive." - Martin Miller, Hairline
"The connection between Milanova and her puppet is immediately obvious and a pleasure to behold." - Julie Dawson, Edinburgh Reporter
"Throughout, this is puppetry of a very high order indeed, and Milanova's considerable skills outshine those of many highly competent puppet companies." - Bill Dunlop, Edinburgh Guide

Awards for Nikotine:
The Union of Polish Actors First Prize
The UNIMA Poland Prize First Prize at the 7th International Gala Star Drama Festival

Jomana Jones Radiate Daniel Alexander Jones Salvage Vanguard Austin TX

with one late night performance Friday July 12th at 10:30 p.m.
at the Salvage Vanguard Theater - 2803 Manor Rd, Austin TX 78722 - click for map.

Conceived by award-winning interdisciplinary artist Daniel Alexander Jones with composer Bobby Halvorson, JOMAMA JONES: RADIATE is part concert, part revival - featuring the triumphant return of legendary expatriate performer Jomama Jones. A mythical R&;B diva who left the United States after a string of hits in the 1980s, Jomama Jones returns from the darkness as a lone star with a singular purpose – to awaken the comeback in us all, through her music and live performance.

Jones is accompanied by her collaborator and musical director, Bobby Halvorson, her backing vocalists, the Sweet Peaches - the extraordinary Helga Davis and Laura Jean Anderson, and a knockout band. She also welcomes a series of very special guests from the Austin community. Jomama Jones shares songs of resilience and regeneration as she recounts her rise to the stratosphere, her self-imposed exile from the U.S. and surprising observations of the America to which she has returned.

"RADIATE glows..." said the New York Times, "making it hard to resist this sequined earth-mother's soulful embrace."

“…A fully fledged creation, complete with a hot band and a powerful message about staying human in tough times” – Minneapolis City Pages

“Jones is a brilliant persona, full of love, light, and beautiful lyrics and stories.” – Jill Dolan, The Feminist Spectator

“Performed with fearless style ... [Jomama Jones] will have you wiggling and bouncing in your seat... a fusion of retro-funk, camp and theatricality that begs for yet another comeback.”– David Cote, NY-1 News

Innocent While You Dream Zeb L. West Austin TX

Don Quixote spends most of this comedy adventure re-telling the story of Moby Dick! See Sancho Panza (as Ishmael) and Ahab battle the white whale windmill! This solo adventure uses puppets, masks, old-timey stagecraft, physical comedy, and sea shanties to smash two literary epics into an hour of shameless antics!
Come see the Austin premiere of the show I'm taking up to 7 fringe festivals in Canada this Summer! Two nights only in the small space at SVT. This is my first go at this thing, so the paint is still a bit wet - I have another month for changes and fixes, so I'd love the feedback and support of my Austin community to make this play as good as it can be! Directed by my constant companion Steve Moore.

This play takes place inside the belly of a whale! A castaway has been swallowed and driven mad by only having two books to read. It's an irreverent and silly one-man comedy about getting dragged along rock bottom and figuring out how to get out of the belly of the beast, told through masks, puppets and sea shanties.

Zeb West studied physical theater, clown and mask-making at the Dell'Arte School in California, and is a member of Austin's Trouble Puppet Theater Company and Brooklyn's Alphabet Arts.

Blood Sweat and Cheers Amy Gentry Kaci Beeler Austin TX

From the minds of critically-acclaimed Hideout Theatre artistic director Roy Janik and "Best of Austin" actor Kaci Beeler comes a brand new comedic play about the world of competitive cheerleading.

In Blood, Sweat, and Cheers 17-year-old June Davis returns to her old cheer gym, the notoriously competitive Austin Cheer Depot, after an abrupt two-year sabbatical. While some of her old teammates are happy for her return, rival and cheer captain Kennedy Campbell is not pleased. June battles her teammates, her parents, her coaches, her best friend James, and herself to make it to the top...but is being the best worth losing everything?

This high-energy, heart-felt, coming of age comedy features a new script by local writer Amy Gentry
and improviser Kaci Beeler, performances by notable Austin comedians including Curtis Luciani and Courtney Hopkin of Your Terrific Neighbors, and a full competitive cheer routine starring athletes from Austin Cheer Factory, Austin's most elite cheerleading program.

After the original script was created by Kaci and Amy, the actors were encouraged to create spontaneous elaborations and interpretations in rehearsal, making the final product a collaborative mix of traditional and improvisational theater.

The lead actors, Kaci Beeler, Kayla Lane Freeman, Karen Jane DeWitt, and Courtney Hopkin, have been doing intensive physical training for the past 8 months. Led by fellow actor and 73-time National Champion Halyn Erickson, these 4 adult women have learned to cheer in the extremely athletic, competitive style executed by today's contemporary All-Star Cheer training centers. All five women have been documenting their training experience online in the Austin Cheer Show blog (http://austincheershow.blogspot.com).

Due to the intense nature of the production, Blood, Sweat, and Cheers is running for two weekends (eight performances total) at The Salvage Vanguard Theater main stage on Manor Rd.
This is one theatrical event no one in Austin will want to miss.

Hyde Park Theatre in collaboration with ScriptWorks and the Salvage Vanguard Theatre

presents
FronteraFest 2013

The 20th Annual FronteraFest
January 15 – February 16, 2013

FronteraFest, now celebrating its 20th year as one of the largest fringe performance events in the Southwest kicks-off its ‘Short Fringe’ from January 15 – February 16 and ‘Long Fringe’ performances from January 21 – February 3, 2013. The Short Fringe takes place at Hyde Park Theatre (511 West 43rd) Tuesdays through Saturdays at 8:00 pm and Long Fringe performances are held at Salvage Vanguard Theatre (2803 Manor Road) at various dates/times (available at www.hydeparktheatre.org). There is also a special ‘Mi Casa es Su Teatro’ event which takes place one day only, Saturday, February 9th from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Over the course of two decades, FronteraFest stages have been host to more than 2,000 performances and well over 8,000 participants from Central Texas and beyond. The month-long Festival, now an institution, features three separate components; the Short Fringe which runs the entirety of the Festival showcasing pieces 25 minutes or less, and the Long Fringe, with longer pieces between 45-90 minutes. The final and most unique component, 'Mi Casa es Su Teatro' consists of one day of performances hosted primarily at private homes.

FronteraFest is a collaboration between two of Austin’s foremost arts organizations, Hyde Park Theatre, an award-winning professional theatre in Central Austin and ScriptWorks, a statewide playwright development and service organization. The Salvage Vanguard Theatre at 2803 Manor Rd. hosts the Long Fringe productions.

The festival was created in 1993 by Frontera@Hyde Park Theatre Artistic Director Vicky Boone. Boone resigned in 2001 and Ken Webster became Artistic Director of the organization, which changed its name to Hyde Park Theatre. In 2002 Hyde Park Theatre and ScriptWorks' began a partnership to produce the storied festival with Christina J. Moore of ScriptWorks serving as festival producer.

To commemorate two decades of exciting, moving, sometimes weird and delightfully unexpected performance, former FronteraFest ‘Best of Fest’ winners and long-time participants have been invited to return to the stage for special appearances on Thursday evenings, including Steven Tomlinson, Emily Fordyce, Cyndi Williams, Zell Miller, III and Keira McDonald. Past notables include nationally recognized playwrights Kirk Lynn, John Walch, and Pulitzer Prize finalist Lisa D'Amour, who presented some of their earliest work at the festival.

Opportunity: FronteraFest 2013 Applications Available via Hyde Park Theatre

FronteraFest 2013 runs January 15 - February 16, 2013. Applications and information now available at www.hydeparktheatre.org

FronteraFest 2013 Austin TXThat's right: it's time to heat up your winter nights again, with the holy-smokes-this-is-momentous 20th anniversary season of FronteraFest at Hyde Park Theatre (typically one gives emeralds on the 20th, hint hint). The Short Fringe, the Long Fringe, BYOV, or Mi Casa--as always and ever, FronteraFest is five weeks of alternative, offbeat, new, and just plain off-the-wall fringe theatre. Too bad there's no actual way to expect the unexpected, because that is your only hope.

FronteraFest is produced in collaboration with ScriptWorks, a group dedicated to supporting emerging playwrights and developing new dramatic works.

The Short Fringe

January 15 - February 16, 2013 at Hyde Park Theatre

Every night we present a new bill of four or five plays no longer than 25 minutes each. Brilliant monologues? Plays in progress? Comedy improv? Cabaret singers? Avant-garde dance? Short films? Multimedia? We've seen it all.

Every Saturday night is a juried "Best of the Week" performance, and the last week, February 12-16, is the juried "Best of the Fest"--with a few wild cards thrown in. A complete schedule, updated regularly, will be available here as the festival approaches.

PARTICIPANTS: Get your application in PDF format turned in right this second, or at least by November 1, 2012. (Seriously, we give out slots on a first-come, first-served basis, so don't delay.)
