True West by Sam Shepard, Weird Rodeo at the Off Center, January 9 - 25, 2014

Weird Rodeo Austin TX

CTXLT review

by Dr. David Glen Robinson

The question one could ask is why a brand-new theatre company would challenge a play as complex and difficult as Sam Shepard’s True West for its premier production. And the question contains the answer—because it is a challenge, and all who see it can measure the company’s skill in their upward progress climbing the monument. That's the first reason to shout “Bravo!” at this show, one of the few.

Weird Rodeo wisely short-circuits some of the difficulties by assembling a highly talented cast and crew. The first stand-out is David Boss as Lee. He is superbly costumed and styled by Lindsay McKenna for his role, and he's an actor who has shown us he can easily learn and spout thousands of lines while physically stomping through any number of flaming sets. His role clearly drives the dialogues and action of the play, and Boss is easily capable of doing this in True West. But here is a note for director Jerry Fugit: Boss and all the actors need clear pause points for reactions and heightened intensity. Boss can fire daggers and poniards from his eyes, but he needs a few more opportunities in this play to do so. It’s not all machine-gun mouth and phone cords. The weaponry metaphors are apt.

Bob Jones as the movie producer Saul Kimmer matches his subtlety to Boss’s power. Lee addresses Saul with the predatory look of a coyote eyeing a rabbit. But Saul’s instincts are those of a rattlesnake, not a rabbit, and he correctly sees the brothers Austin (Chris Hejl) and Lee for who and what they are. Saul slithers through the story with complete control, a fact we notice only later. Bob Jones does excellent work, making his reactions and taking his silences as needed to flesh out his character.

The story of True West is well known: after years of separation family members come back together with the intensity of hypergolic solid rocket fuel, a trope perhaps invented by Sam Shepard. The biblical Prodigal Son parable it ain’t. The father is absent, said by Saul to be “destitute” which the entire audience takes to mean “insane.” Dad fled to the Desert, and here we see the first layerings of meaning on Shepard’s conception of Desert. The meanings Shepard gives it are largely chthonic, steeped in desolation and darkness. Mom (Bobbie Oliver) is in the Far North touring Alaska, a desert of another sort. The criminal but romantic seeker Lee sees the Desert as a refuge from authority and control, while Austin, educated and tame, fears it. Between scenes coyote voices on the soundtrack howl songs of death.

The Desert underlies the more surficial titular theme of the West. And here's where Weird Rodeo succeeds in the task it set for itself. We see clearly the distinction between brother Austin’s real West (freeways, palm trees and golf courses) and Lee’s unstated but described True West. All is made plain by Lee’s verbal homage to Kirk Douglas as the last cowboy on earth in the movie Lonely Are the Brave. Lee would have given his life to have worked in that film in any capacity, but Austin, the Ivy League screenwriter, has never seen the movie. The production ultimately accomplishes its theatrical and literary goals by making the West distinctions clear and dealing with their implications.

Robert Faires Outlines FronteraFest BRING YOUR OWN VENUE performances, January, 2014

FronteraFest 2014 Austin TXAustin Chronicle TX

Change of Venue

This year, FronteraFest is takin' it to the streets – and a chapel, a bookstore, a home ...

By Robert Faires, Fri., Jan. 10, 2014

Come January every year, FronteraFest fans begin flocking toward Hyde Park Theatre and Salvage Vanguard Theater with the instinctive surety of swallows winging their way back to Capistrano. And why not? With HPT serving as the site of the Short Fringe for the performance jamboree's full 21-year history and SVT being a home base for Long Fringe shows for the last five fests, audiences have been conditioned to expect their annual fix of taking-a-risk, skirting-the-edge, what-in-sweet-heaven-was-that theatrics in those specific venues. But this year, regulars who rely on that reflex to get them to all of the festival's offerings risk missing some of the more intriguing projects on the schedule.

Now, nothing's happened to FFest's traditional stages (see "FronteraFest: The Basics" , but the number of entries in the category dubbed BYOV ("Bring Your Own Venue") is considerably higher than usual. Where most FronteraFests see one or two projects mounted somewhere other than SVT, the 2014 festival has six – and that isn't counting Mi Casa Es Su Teatro, the independently curated day of site-specific short pieces that's been part of FFest for more than 15 years. You can take your pick of a church chapel, a SoCo sidewalk, a dance studio, a bookstore, a warehouse, or a writer's residence for a performance adventure.

Rose Theatre's 2014 season holds dramas and original comedies

The folks at the Rose Theatre Company have gone through a rough patch financially in the past few months.

To put them on firmer footing, they're making plans for a fund-raising gala on Feb. 1. The evening will include live music, sketch comedy and previews of upcoming shows, as well as a silent auction and an auction of services provided by Rose actors.

The company is also strongly pushing VIP memberships, which go for $15 a month and which include tickets to evening and kids' shows, as well as preferred seating on comfy couches.

As a thank you for the added support, the company is also going to be doing a lot of community outreach, including free performances for schools and shelters.

“A lot of schools don't have the money to take kids to see shows,” said Jessie Rose, who owns the theater with her husband, Chris Manley. “We'd love to be able to provide that for them. We're going to do as many free shows as we can.

“I think our goal this year is to be able to help other people. It's important.”

The company will continue producing a blend of Rose-directed contemporary dramas and Manley-penned comedies. The comedies include some raunchier stuff in the same vein as the Shock Puppets shows the company made a splash with shortly after opening in 2009; to make the explicit content clear to audiences, those shows will be designated “Shock Puppets Theatre” offerings. (The puppets themselves were killed off last year, so don't expect to see them onstage.)

Overtime's 2014 season holds all-new material, including a weekly serial
By Deborah Martin : January 2, 2014

SAN ANTONIO — When the folks at the Overtime Theater sat down to choose their 2014 lineup, they had a lot to choose from.

After their call for original work went viral, the company ended up getting around 300 scripts, a huge increase in the usual pool, said Kyle Gillette, the company's artistic director: “I'd say it was three or four times what we normally get.”

The scripts came from all over the country.

A total of 15 wide-ranging pieces — including a new serial — made the final cut. One piece, Overtime Executive Director Michael Burger's “The Beasts of Baverly Grove,” will take place in both of the Overtime's theaters.

To get the complete story, audiences will need to check out the show in each space. It plays Oct. 17-Nov. 15.

For the most part, the smaller, more experimental pieces this year can be seen in the Overtime's smaller space. That theater, which has been informally known as the Li'l OT, has been named The Stables. The name is a nod to the stables where director David Lynch shot some of his surreal 1977 classic “Eraserhead,” Gillette said.
