Auditions for Ben Jonson's The Alchemist spring 2012

The Baron's Men will be conducting auditions for Ben Jonson's The Alchemist at the Wells Branch Recreation Center in room #4 on Saturday, November 5th, and Sunday November 6th from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Head shots are welcome but not necessary. Auditions will consist of readings with other actors from selected scenes. If you have any Elizabethan monologues prepared as audition pieces, feel free to perform them (Shakespeare, Jonson, Marlow, Fletcher and Beaumont, et al). If you sing, please have a piece prepared; a cd player will be available for accompaniment. Wells Branch Recreation Center is located at 3000 Shoreline Dr., Austin, TX 78728 (click for map), tel. This show is scheduled to run the last three weeks in April at the Curtain Theater. Rehearsals will be 1-3 days per week for the preceding 8 weeks depending on the role with two table readings prior to the first rehearsal. If you have not participated in a Baron's Men show you will need to meet your assigned sponsor so please email or call as soon as possible.

What do Robert Redford, Vanessa Redgrave, Sam Shepard and just about everyone in Seguin have in common? They've all been to the Texas Theatre, a historic 1930s former movie house along the main thoroughfare of this small town northeast of San Antonio on Interstate 10.

Currently owned by the Seguin Conservation Sciety and for more than 60 years owned and run by a family of motion-picture exhibitors with theaters throughout South Texas, the Texas Theatre recently received a facelift and reopened as a live-performance, multi-media venue and meeting/even space.

Together with its downtown neighbor the independently owned Palace Theatre, the Texas Theatre is helping put Seguin on the map as a center for live performances, dinner theater, music concerts, meetings and more, drawing theater and history buffs from all over the state.

Father Mike Wallens and Director Heather Huggins will moderate a talk-back between the audience, members of the cast, and the St. Stephen's GSA following each performance. A school counselor will also be in attendance at each production.

On October 6th of 1998, Matthew Shepard, a gay University of Wyoming student, was beaten and left to die tied to a fence in the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. He died 6 days later. His torture and murder became a watershed historical moment in America that highlighted many of the fault lines in our culture.

A month after the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, the members of Tectonic Theater Project traveled to Laramie and conducted interviews with the people of the town. From these interviews they wrote the play "The Laramie Project", which has become one of the most performed plays in America in the last decade. The company later made the play into a film for HBO. The play and the movie combined have been seen by more than 50 million people around the world.

Parent Advisory: As "The Laramie Project" deals with sensitive and mature issues, we want to caution parents to familarize themselves with the material prior to either sending or bringing younger, middle school aged children to the play. It is not actually recommended for a younger audience, and we want you to be aware of the content.

Concordia University's Texas Theatre Program stages their production of The Miracle Worker in the Black Box Theater on November 10th through 12th. The classic American drama by William Gibson is based on the real-life adolescence of Helen Keller, capturing the dark and incomprehensible world of a deaf, blind, and mute child in the 19th century.

Unable to understand the world around her, Keller often flies into primal fits of rage and desperation, each year becoming more unruly and hopeless to her family. The isolation imposed by Keller's complete lack of communication is broken only by a young and inexperienced teacher, Anne Sullivan. Half-blind herself, Sullivan proves that with patience, determination and a lot of tough love, anything is possible.

A cast of ten students will perform playwright William Gibson’s Tony Award-winning drama under the direction of Dr. Lisa Neely, who directed last spring’s sold-out production of The Importance of Being Earnest. The Concordia University cast features students Maggie Thompson as "Helen Keller" and Cassandra Hood as "Anne Sullivan." The production also features cast members Amanda Herrera, Michael Vybiral, Brandon Marks, Amanda Lewis, KyLene Pederson, Adrian Galindo, Katelyn Norman and Susan Pacey.
