Impact Austin Grants $100,000 to Zach Theatre Education Programs

Zach Theatre Austin TXZACH Theatre has been awarded a $100,000 grant from Impact Austin — a nonprofit organization that pools annual donations from members and gives grants to local, worthy causes selected by its members — to fund the expansion of ZACH’s Arts Across the Curriculum program.

Impact Austin will hold an award presentation for ZACH on Monday, June 17 at noon at the Topfer Theatre’s People’s Plaza, 202 S. Lamar Blvd. at W. Riverside Dr. The presentation is open to the public.

ZACH Theatre’s Arts Across the Curriculum is an arts integration and professional development program that trains teachers to use creative drama and theatre techniques to actively engage students in language arts, science, history, and math curricula.

Impact Austin’s grants are awarded in five focus areas: culture, education, environment, family, and health and wellness. ZACH’s Arts Across the Curriculum program was the grant winner for the culture category, which encompasses programs and projects that cultivate, develop, educate and improve the cultural climate in the Greater Austin area.

For the past two years, ZACH Theatre, with support from partner organizations mindPOP, Austin ISD and The Kennedy Center, has successfully piloted the AAC program in three Title I Austin ISD elementary schools and 15 classrooms. The Impact Austin grant will allow ZACH to expand its AAC program from three Title I schools to 16, from 15 teachers to 60, and from 300 at-risk students to 1,500 over the next two years. The grant will also fund the addition of a dedicated program coordinator, salaries for teaching artists, and an in-depth third-party quantitative and qualitative evaluation conducted by UT to measure the effectiveness of the program so it can further be refined and expanded.

Pollyanna Theatre and Long Center Announce Alliance

Received today:
Pollyanna Theatre Austin TX

Pollyanna Theatre Company announces new Strategic Alliance with
the Long Center for the Performing Arts

The ‘Good Neighbor Arts Education Project’ will reach Austin’s most at-risk kids
Central Texas’ most well-known children’s theatre company, Pollyanna Theatre, in strategic alliance with the Long Center for the Performing Arts, is excited to launch THE GOOD NEIGHBOR ARTS EDUCATION PROJECT; designed to enhance the general education of some of Central Austin’s most at-risk young people.

The new alliance, through shared services and coordinated outreach efforts, will establish sustained educational relationships with up to seven elementary schools within its first two years, all located within three miles of the Long Center with an at-risk population averaging over 70%. In the first year, immediate service areas include Baty, Dawson, and Becker Elementary Schools.

The program includes pre and post production activities for students and teachers as well as tickets to three productions slated for the 2012-2013 school year. Arts education outreach efforts will also be coordinated with Extend-A-Care for Kids. Pollyanna Theatre Company will provide professionally-trained drama teachers to develop and teach classes on all three campuses before each Pollyanna production.

Six-week classes thematically linked to upcoming Pollyanna productions will offer children a variety of opportunities for creative expression and mentoring. Then, as a group, students will travel to the Long Center’s Rollins Studio Theatre to experience professional theatre presentations written and designed with their developmental and educational needs in mind. Post-show follow-up visits to each school will further expand the learning begun in the theatre.

Currently, over 70,000 students travel each year to the Long Center for arts performances. However, many of these students have no sustained exposure to professional arts presentations or classes. “The Long Center and Pollyanna Theatre Company wish to provide sustained, life-changing arts experiences for young people through ongoing, repeated visits to the Long Center where children will consistently explore and make discoveries through theatre,” says Judy Matetzschk-Campbell, Ph.D, founder and Artistic Director of Pollyanna Theatre Company.

Although many local children pass the Center almost daily with their families, many have yet to realize that the Center and the arts, is there for them, to enrich their lives.

THE GOOD NEIGHBOR ARTS EDUCATION PROJECT is an effort to break down this invisible wall. Jamie Grant, Executive Director and CEO of the Long Center states, “We strive to ensure our youngest neighbors can fully experience the arts as audience members through regular visits to the theatre and moreover, can become artistic creators in their own right.”

The collaboration is a natural fit. Since the opening of the Long Center four years ago, Pollyanna has made the Long Center’s Rollins Studio Theatre its performance home. The two organizations’ shared desire to better serve young people through the arts became apparent, leading to a partnership to leverage resources to educate through the arts.

ABOUT POLLYANNA THEATRE COMPANY: The founders of Pollyanna Theatre Company believe that theatre is a powerful teaching tool that speaks to people of all ages in a unique and powerful way through a variety of visual, aural, and emotional languages. Therefore, theatre should be a part of all general education from Pre-Kindergarten through adulthood. Toward that end, The Pollyanna Theatre Company strives to work alongside educators to inspire, motivate, and teach audiences of all ages. Although the company’s primary focus is upon young audience members, the ensemble performs top quality theatrical productions that speak to and illuminate the human spirit and condition for all ages. www.PollyannaTheatreCompany.org

Cinderella Waltz by Don Nigro, Red Dragon Players, Austin High School, January 19 - 21

Cinderella Waltz Don Nigro Austin High School TX

The mischievous Don Nigro puts the Cinderella fairy tale into a humorous trailer-park context and sends it spinning around so unpredictably that you're never quite sure whether the sweet, mistreated Rosie Snow is going to turn up roses or not.

Shannon Tipton directed a one-act version of the story last week as her inaugural outing with the Austin High School Red Dragons with their 401st stage production. It was a "novice" production with a cast of faces mostly new to me, for I missed their Jungle Book earlier this year.

The core story is there, of course, with the sweetly downcast Louise Root as the titular character, afflicted by her garish, dim and horrible stepmother (Samantha Melomo) and stepsisters wearing names from Shakespeare's King Lear -- booted, grumpy Goth-style Goneril (Layla Gilliland) and Barbie-esque Reagan (Abby Lewis). Dull-witted Dad (Oliver Davis), sort of like Jed Clampett, spends most of his time in the trailer behind the playing area, hollering for help in finding his pants.

McCoy Johnston, Louise Root (image: Red Dragon Players)Nigro plants a troll in the well at center stage. Or rather, an affably confused royal flunky named "Troll," who fell in while wandering around the countryside, delivering invitations to the ball on behalf of the prince. Zach Completo makes his trollish footman (or perhaps footmanish troll) entirely likeable, abashed but eager to please, quite baffled by the determination of Mama Snow to get herself and her two favored girls into the palace.

Add McCoy Johnston as the village idiot, touseled, dirty and moaning in inarticulate frustration, prototype of the "barefoot boy with cheek of tan" and prime material for a potential makeover -- he is at turns silly and touching. Riley Ryan-Wood as Mother Maggie pops out of the wishing well when needed, an ironic fairy godmother who'd be entirely at ease in an afterhours lush life bar.

Gypsy is considered one of the greatest musicals of all time, with some of the most memorable tunes ever written such as Everything is Coming Up Roses and Let Me Entertain You. It is a universal story of a mother and her relationships with her daughters set in the world of vaudeville and burlesque from 1910 through the 30s. Momma Rose is the classic stage-mother who is outrageous, brash, tough and larger than life. And her dream for success is a dream she lives vicariously through her daughters.

The dream team who created the original production of Gypsy includes Arthur Laurents (Book Writer), Stephen Sondheim (Lyricist), Jule Styne (Composer), and Jerome Robbins (Director/Choreographer). The local production team includes Ginger Morris (Director/Choreographer), Rachael Koske (Production Manager/Costume Designer), Becky White (Technical Director), and Tom Gabrielsen (Music Director/Conductor).

Father Mike Wallens and Director Heather Huggins will moderate a talk-back between the audience, members of the cast, and the St. Stephen's GSA following each performance. A school counselor will also be in attendance at each production.

On October 6th of 1998, Matthew Shepard, a gay University of Wyoming student, was beaten and left to die tied to a fence in the outskirts of Laramie, Wyoming. He died 6 days later. His torture and murder became a watershed historical moment in America that highlighted many of the fault lines in our culture.

[Apple users: can't see the video? Click to go to YouTube]

A month after the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, the members of Tectonic Theater Project traveled to Laramie and conducted interviews with the people of the town. From these interviews they wrote the play "The Laramie Project", which has become one of the most performed plays in America in the last decade. The company later made the play into a film for HBO. The play and the movie combined have been seen by more than 50 million people around the world.

Parent Advisory: As "The Laramie Project" deals with sensitive and mature issues, we want to caution parents to familarize themselves with the material prior to either sending or bringing younger, middle school aged children to the play. It is not actually recommended for a younger audience, and we want you to be aware of the content.

Concordia University's Texas Theatre Program stages their production of The Miracle Worker in the Black Box Theater on November 10th through 12th. The classic American drama by William Gibson is based on the real-life adolescence of Helen Keller, capturing the dark and incomprehensible world of a deaf, blind, and mute child in the 19th century.

miracle_worker_concordia.tif

Unable to understand the world around her, Keller often flies into primal fits of rage and desperation, each year becoming more unruly and hopeless to her family. The isolation imposed by Keller's complete lack of communication is broken only by a young and inexperienced teacher, Anne Sullivan. Half-blind herself, Sullivan proves that with patience, determination and a lot of tough love, anything is possible.

A cast of ten students will perform playwright William Gibson’s Tony Award-winning drama under the direction of Dr. Lisa Neely, who directed last spring’s sold-out production of The Importance of Being Earnest. The Concordia University cast features students Maggie Thompson as "Helen Keller" and Cassandra Hood as "Anne Sullivan." The production also features cast members Amanda Herrera, Michael Vybiral, Brandon Marks, Amanda Lewis, KyLene Pederson, Adrian Galindo, Katelyn Norman and Susan Pacey.

The Black Box Theater is located at 11400 Concordia University Drive in Building A on the Concordia University Texas campus. For more information and reservations, call (512) 313-PLAY (7529).

Who wrote Shakespeare's plays? We don't care! -- we just want to perform them for you. Take the trip out to the fancy-pants Dripping Springs High School Auditorium Theater and see our version of A Midsummer Night's Dream, complete with all the fairies, donkey heads, and mixed-up lovers you could possibly want. Directed by Rachael Koske with technical direction by Becky White.

Don't think you like Shakespeare? DSHS Theatre is up to the challenge of changing your mind. Already a fan? Then you will love this faithful retelling of the Bard's classic. Three exciting plotlines intersect in A Midsummer Night's Dream, one of Shakespeare's most popular comedies. Dripping Springs High School Theatre presents it as the first show of the exciting 2011-2012 season, in the new DSISD Auditorium Theatre! Many enjoyed last year's splashy production of the musical, "Footloose", and we now invite you to experience the first full-length non-musical production in this beautiful space!

Set in a 1920's era Athens, the audience follows the cast of "Midsummer" through a mythical enchanted forest as the inhabitants of the fairy world create havoc on their plans and their love lives! As Shakespeare writes in the play, "The course of true love never did run smooth."

DSHS' Rachael Koske directs 29 student performers in this production, with a crew of 16 led by technical director Becky White. Scenic and lighting designs by White set off period costumes designed by Koske and Ellie Blackwood. The music of Duke Ellington's Three Suites helps set the mood of this off-kilter, surprising, and oft-hilarious play. Come dream away an evening with us!

Performances are in the DSISD Auditorium Theatre at 7:30 pm on November 3, 4, and 5, with an additional matinee performance on November 5 at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $6.00 for students and $10.00 for adults, and are available at the door. The Box Office opens one hour before each performance.

Br'er Wood is a fantasy story, theatre, puppetry, dance and music that employs the characters from the “Uncle Remus” takes by Joel Chandler Harris. Threaded together with surrealism and metaphor, this comedy takes the shape of a child's imagination, playground rules, and the forces of good and evil. Set in and about the Br'er Wood, Br'er Rabbit, Br'er Fox, Miss Meadows, Sister Duck and all their friends come to life through the imagination of a young boy.
